The corporate owner of the 'Willis Tower' is CB Richard Ellis - it was sold around 2004-2005 if I remember correctly. Willis is just leasing the name of the building. I don't think it will work that well in Chicago - I still call the Aon Building the Standard Oil building...

Part of that is because it's not the original stadium anymore. The same reason goes for the United Center (not exactly because it was always called that) even though it was built in basically the same location as the old Chicago Stadium.

amateur6: OLD. FARKING. NEWS.

/bitter
//submitted this weeks ago

Well, the knowledge that it was going to be renamed is old news. The fact that it officially happened today, with the new signage unveiled, and pomp and ceremony, is quite new.

I'm pretty sure we had a thread about this weeks ago, too, so that's probably the one you should be bitter about.

I think it's a stroke of marketing geniuis. I, for one, plan to go out immediately after work and buy a whole bunch of..ummm....whatever it is that Willis sells!

They should also change the name of the Empire State Building, but more for political-correctness -- I've heard that imperialism is bad.

I am still ticked that our former governor renamed Squaw Peak to Piestawa Peak. It's been known as Squaw Peak for over a hundred years, but because of 9/11, the war in Afghanistan, and because some woman dies in an ambush because she made a wrong turn (and this somehow makes her a "hero"), the name of a mountain had to be changed.

Someone should build a really short tower right next to the Willis tower, paint it the same black colour and call it the Arnold tower.

That also probably has something to do with the cycle of political correctness. Due to some confusion in etymology, some people think the word "squaw" is offensive.

I for one, refuse to start calling a building something else just because someone pays someone else to tell me I should.

I never refer to the new Montreal forum as the Bell Center. Sorry, my brain's real estate ain't for sale.

Yeah, plenty of people have taken to calling it the Wesley Willis tower instead already.

They were playing WW songs on the radio yesterday, right aquigly?

The Ballpark in Arlington has a corporate name, Ameriquest Field I think, but no one calls it that. It is always The Ballpark in Arlington, even if you are actually already in Arlington.

CitizenTed: The Madd Man: Seriously people, stop renaming important shiat.

Totally. Pretty soon tourists will be visiting the Siemens Gate in Berlin, the Peugeot Tower in Paris and the Westinghouse Monument in Washington DC. And you'll be paying your parking tickets at the local WalMart County Courthouse.

If something is named after a historical person, war, president or whatever I agree. If the name of a building is a gigantic advert then who cares if the next corporation that moves in wants to change it.

odinsposse: I honestly can't get too worked up about this. The Sears Tower was named for its corporate owner Sears, Roebuck and Co. Now it's been renamed for it's new corporate owner Willis Group Holdings. That doesn't seem like a huge desecration of history to me.

Its not the new Corporate Owner, its just a large tenant. They bought the rights along with the space. The leasing company was desperate in this economy to sell the space so they offered it as a bonus.

This, this and THIS. It's about time Wesley Willis got his just recognition. He truly was a Chicago treasure, and the tower showed up prominently in many of his line drawings, like this one:
