Good, get them off the planes I fly on. One dog shiatting within 10 feet of me on a plane was enough to make me wish they all were banned.

They need to make an airline for infants too and ban them from traveling with us civilized people.

Ric Romero says:

People with pets often have disposable income, and do silly things for them.

Me, I have a dog that needs $100 of medicine every month, and I plan to pay that for the next 10+ years. If you're wealthy enough to travel across country, and have a pet, you're likely wealthy enough to splash out the additional $300 or so for the trip. You'd be paying a good chunk of that anyways, shipping the pet as cargo.

Better not take a dog on the space shuttle, because if he sticks his head out when you're coming home his face might burn up.

You know, if aliens are watching us, they probably think the dogs are the leaders.

If you see two life forms: one of them is making a poop, the other one is carrying it for him, who would you assume is in charge?

Isn't there some kind of recession on? Where people don't have any money and the states don't have budgets and are paying employees with IOUs and stuff? And everyone is out of work?

Just checking.

You know, given the circumstances, I would probably opt for this.

It's not that much more expensive then shipping the pet by cargo, and definitely safer. I'd worry myself out wondering what's happening to my dog in a cargo hold.

And you know, when the couple started working toward this 5 years ago, it actually had a very reasonable chance of being successful. People had more disposable income, and those without kids were spending on their pets.

Pre-recession, this would probably take off. Not so sure now, but I think there are probably still people who would be willing to avail themselves of their services.

eldie 2009-07-15 11:58:23 PM
As per the article, there's a demand for this service since flights are booked for the next two months. Sounds like it would make sense if you need to take your pet across the country or a very significant distance and you're not driving. For example if you're moving, or going for a lengthy vacation and you want to bring your pet with you instead of boarding him/her. Good option for "snow birds" who fly down to Florida for winter months. It sounds like it is a superior option to flying your pet in the cargo of a plane where then has been a lot of stories of tragedies due to extreme temperatures, pets escaping, etc. Like to see how it works out, if it is profitable, if there are any incidents of major behavior problems with the pets, etc.

Fark wouldn't let me link it, but here's a story about dogs in Russia that commute by train to bum food in the city each day, then commute home to the suburbs at the end of the day (with pics).

I thought I posted this earlier, but apparently Firefox neglected to save my password, so it never actually MADE it through the intertubes.

Trimming the earlier snark and such out of what I posted, the bottom line - why is "Amanda Hickey" paying to fly her dogs from her soon-to-be home in Denver to Chicago while she gets hitched in Aruba?

Maybe I was wrong. Maybe instead of flying zepplins and throwing out silver dollars for are amusement, the filthy rich are giving their pet's their own airline to mock the average smuck in today's economy.

I agree. Children should be treated as baggage that's not allowed under the seats on flights.

Jynnjynn 2009-07-16 05:52:30 AM
I feel a better business plan would have been a pet FRIENDLY airline, where pets and their owners can both get seats on the plane together, maybe have sealed off little cubicles kinda like a train... I could not afford to fly my cats on vacation with me anyways, but if I could, I would find having my pets on a different plane with a different flight schedule just as stressful if not more than having them in cargo. I worry enough about losing my luggage :-/

Two words: Cough medicine.

Give it to them 30 minutes before take-off, and they'll sleep the whole dang way. Parents always get snippy about drugging their kids, but seriously, once or twice for plane trips isn't going to hurt them.
