on the plus side she's going to have the silhouette of a smokin' hot babe on her forehead for the next few months.

Article says "19-year-old", but the URL says "girl". I think they got their facts wrong with the initial posting.

yeah, she's 19. her family names her here
Her father, Jose Cortes, did not wait for paramedics at the scene of the freak accident. He removed his shirt, stuffed it into her neck to control the bleeding and chose to drive his daughter to University Hospital in Newark, careening through the streets of two counties. Rita Cortes was listed in critical but stable condition.
and oddly - that article still says it was a muffler. gotta love the media and mixed signals

It was a mudflap bracket/brace.. not actual mudflap.

Actua; mudflap would have been better

nytmare 2009-07-15 09:58:20 PM
In my travels of roadside debris cleanup, I see a lot of big rig mudflaps and their heavy steel braces. I don't know what's causing them to break off so often, but the mudflap and retread industries do not have their shiat together.

This story has all kinds of 9's in it except for her real age.

The new thing is for farktards to take the frames used for real estate signs and place a few of them across the road. They have spiked bases.

Wonderful.

If this was back in the day it's be 24 year old parent with a 12 year old kid...

just sayin'

17 or 18 used to be considered a late age to start breedin'

LongTimeLurker FirstTimeFarker 2009-07-15 10:08:25 PM
I can't fault the subby, reading the article the (girl/woman) is (9/19) years old and was hit by a (muffler/mud flap/mudflap bracket), which came from the other side of the road via: (kicked up from another car/fell off a truck/came from a flying truck.)

that's some damn fine journalism, Lou.

When, 800 AD?

greenz [TotalFark] 2009-07-15 10:13:36 PM
So I was driving down I-8 through southern California at night...

(somewhere near El Centro)

I was kinda zoned out in the long straight desert... and then SUDDENLY:

OFFICE CHAIR!!!

F*ckin swirved at 85 mph to miss it, which I did... I stopped, threw that biatch in reverse and backed up to the OFFICE CHAIR while on the shoulder.

I threw that hell beast from satan into the ditch, then continued on with a feeling of win.

The headline is the article's fault: It started with 18 years old, edited to 9, and finally edited one more time with 19. Journalistic pride? Where?

In Australia, they have Ned Kelly "BACK OFF" mudflaps instead of Yosemite Sam.

Reminds me of this story from the area recently. Some poor sap got killed by a piece of metal that flew through his windshield right into his head. I don't think they've found the source yet.

Scary stories, like when there was a spell of transport wheels flying off and crushing people's cars back before they tightened regulations in the 90s. Things are bad enough on the roads without worrying about flying random objects that could really f*ck up your day.

Oh it was a WHITE '97 honda odyssey i sense a hate crime.

As someone who almost got smashed by a piece of blown out tire yesterday, I'm getting a kick out of these replies...

Glad I read TFA( and comments) before I commented here.

Oh, and today I saw a guy on a bike get run over by a car pulling out onto a street. It was one of those things at a 4 way when no one wants to go, so they both go, stop and get confused and wait for the other to make a move. Like that with taco shaped bicycle wheels and alot of road rash.

A friend of mine's sister was killed the first day of her honeymoon when a big rig's brake drum blew apart and a chunk of it came through the windshield. Wonder how much therapy the groom has had since...

This was momentarily a lot funnier when I briefly read that as "Ned Beatty".

Reading the article's comments, it would appear the article changed, not a case of subby messing up.

FTFA: "her father was driving north on Routes 1 & 9 "

Random trash flying through the windshield? Well what do you expect when you try to drive straddling two different roads?

How about at least reading the article subby.

So was she 9 or 19? That's a pretty big difference.
