logophile: my 3 yo son just scared the crap out of me this afternoon... thought he went upstairs to the bedrooms, he somehow went out the backdoor instead, closed it behind him, managed to crawl around?under? the gas grill that was blocking the stairs, out to the house next door which is UNDER CONSTRUCTION, and i didnt even know he was gone (full disclosure, he's got a twin sister i was occupied with)
... until the neighbor i had not officially met yet showed up with him at the front door about 20 minutes after i last had a visual on him.

what is it with you guys? it's not like i've never talked to him about going out without us (ie dont do it) or that he isnt aware he's going to get the hammer dropped on him if he gets busted... wtf?!

Decision making parts of the brain are not fully developed until age 25 or so.

Buy some heavy deadbolts, high locks etc... and don't give him the chance to be an idiot, because at some point (even if he knows better) he will.

/got a 5yr old myself. ;)

I live around there, and I can tell you it really isn't that fast a river, also from what I heard shortly after this incident, the little boy snuck out of the parents tend early in the morning, thats why nobody really noticed he was gone.

You know, the reporter could of asked the kid to pick a few random numbers. But noooooooooooooooo -

If the river was calm and the truck not taking on water, there's little to have scared the kid. A kid that age will go "Ohh I on a river!" and be endlessly amused by just floating down the river and seeing what goes by. Autism, not required.

That guy was a dipshiat schizophrenic off his meds who committed suicide.

FTFY.

/Keep in mind his life story was directed by Jeff farking Spicoli

He may have been off his meds but he was killed by his own ego.

No meds. No suicide. Just ego.

No meds. No suicide. Ego only. Final Destination.

DrForrester: Dude. Canadian.

My Canadian drama teacher in high school made the mistake of telling us that his father taught him to swim by throwing him off a boat repeatedly.

Many skits about Canadian swimming lessons were performed.

/maybe that's really how they do it
//if it works, it works, I guess

Lumoclear 2009-07-15 04:56:08 AM
The new story here had a different spin from the Canadian new sources. The river wasn't really raging and he floated 12 kilometers down river or so. And the, "somehow entered the river" was reported up here as he drove down a boat ramp.

You guys down in Canada's pants really add the drama to otherwise mundane Canadian lives.

Do you know the way to Mordor 2009-07-15 05:18:32 AM
What worries me about this story is that if a child does something we know to be extremely dangerous, has a lot of fun doing it, and nothing happens to him, then I feel the kid is much more likely to try and do the same thing again. After all, from the kid's point of view, nothing went wrong, some fun was had, and he saw his parents again afterwards.

///Sadly, these kinds of happy endings are never guaranteed...

Why have children if you don't want to pay attention to them? If your toddler ends up behind the wheel of a moving car, running around a construction site, floating down the river alone or wandering into a busy freeway, you may need try a little harder.

Not saying you don't love your kids; just that you might want to concentrate more on keeping them alive.

Agreed. Since when did a child not freaking out for two hours become a symptom of autism? I know kids can have short attention spans, but I hardly think that counts. Just because modern adults have forsaken nature itself as entertainment and demand 24/7 distraction via electronic boxes doesn't mean all children have, as well. I think that lots of kids would be fascinated for hours just floating down a river, watching nature and the water.

Dmala: Imagine being out on the river in your boat and a 3-year-old comes floating by in his Power Wheels truck, just burbling away. I'm thinking you've got to just look at each other and blink for a few seconds before you react.

I am with ya, I have seen some odd things floating down a river, but a 3 Year old in a Power Wheels truck would take the cake!

You guys are ridiculous! That kid was SO lucky not to have fallen off, because I DOUBT a 3 year old is going to be able to swim to shore. 9 out of 10 other kids would have sunk and drowned.

and a leash around the house would be pretty sick. i actually have a pair of those (twins, remember) if ever needed for the outdoors.. like maybe when we go to six flags this fall.

no, what we need is to get some locking deadbolts for the doors, or latches that would go out of reach at the top...

For anyone giving the general cry of "keep a better eye on your kids"... that's obvious, but not practical advice for 100% of the time in a "safe" environment. You 'babyproof' as best you can to avoid poison drinking or knife throwing but i'm pretty sure it'd be a bigger health risk to have those two at my side every screaming/yelling/jumping/tummy-poking second of the day.

You'll see. You'll be a parent one day.

Playing On The Roof 2009-07-15 06:16:17 PM
logophile: You'll see. You'll be a parent one day.

Exactly.

One minute they're in the living room watching PeeWee's Playhouse and eating a bowl of Trix so you figure you have a window of opportunity to use the bathroom and then they've disappeared and you're searching the house and then standing on the front lawn in your bathrobe, yelling their full name at the top of your lungs until your cross-the-street neighbor opens his second story window and informs you that your child is playing on their backyard swing set. In his footy pajamas. And he'ld brought his cereal with him.

Or I could tell ya bout the time he climbed the bookcases which then fell on him or jumped off the deck which was 12' above ground or was jumping on the bed, went to jump off but the sheet was wrapped around his feet and he broke his collar bone or the time he got a bb shot into his leg (it's still there, his "stupid party trick" is that he can stick a refrigerator magnet to his leg), or how he could not pass up an opportunity to get wet, be it puddle, pool, stream or ocean, or a myriad of other "boys will be boys" incidents.

And people wonder why we had only one.

Funny lots of parents like my Dad did just fine without extreme measures ya know like control me had childproof locks, choosed his battles and never took a child under 4 to something over stimulating like an amusement park. To him it was too much hassle and diaper bags bottles even with a stoller can get heavy after a while. Besides they can just stay at a grandparents or an uncles or aunts while you're gone.

I hate it when family memebers bring babies on vacation. It just seems pointless. You're there for a vacation to relax go by yourself and keep the cell off.
