Any ice cream made on the 'original' Iron Chef takes my vote. fish products, poultry, etc...none of these should be in ice cream.

One thing you could always count on if fish was involved, Sakai (Iron Chef French) was making ice cream.

Same here. The texture is...interesting, but it's not really bad.

This. I actually *enjoy* space ice cream. I bought like 10 packages of the stuff once and ate all of it within a day. Okay, so maybe that was a bit much but I've been known to eat ice cream for breakfast and eat half a gallon or more in one go. I'm pretty hardcore about my ice cream.

Actually, there are a couple of _real_ flavours of ice cream I'd put on that list before I'd say Astronaut. Tiger Tail, for example (licorice is one of the many reasons British cooking is infamous), or Green Tea (it sounds so good, it tastes so bad).

I used to work in a store that sold astronaut ice cream. I used my employee discount to buy a package or two every few weeks. Awesome stuff but, amazingly, it is possible to get sick of it after a while.

Also, parmesan ice cream is probably awesome, too. Parmesan is a very common dessert ingredient. Imagine it with a little (high quality) balsamic on top. Yum.

Nah, it's a dehydrated ice cream sandwich. It's not something you'd eat every day, but on a field trip it's perfect. To this day, a trip to a science museum is not complete without it.

I grew up near Aldrich's Beef & Ice Cream Parlor. Each April 1st, they would have a new weird flavor like:

Bacon and Eggs
Sauerkraut
Corned Beef and Hash
Dill Pickle
Mac&Cheese,
Bologna
Chocolate Spaghetti

It was featured on NPR and the Tonight Show several times sadly, though it has since closed down.

My friend's parents once bought a half gallon of olive ice cream without telling him, and marked it "bing cherry."

Pumpkin ice cream is delicious, not all that unusual.
The closest I have tasted to Pumpkin is Ben & Jerry's Cinnamon Bun kind.

I have had Garlic Ice cream which I noticed a commenter on the original article said was disgusting. I too had some at the Garlic Festival in Gilroy, CA, over 20 years ago I remember liking it. My Mom and brother liked it as well.

Seems a shame this guy did not also include a list of unusual ice creams that were good. Lazy bastard.

And astronaut ice cream in no way should have made this list. Again lazy bastard - could have easily located and tried it.

One can always count on the Japanese(in Japan) to serve up the MOST grotesque things.

"Never mind that chicken-fried steak itself is pretty gross"

YOU SHUT YOUR DIRTY WHORE MOUTH!!

There's nothing better than chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, Texas toast and a lil' bit of Tapatio hot sauce. Wash it down with a Dublin Dr. Pepper or sweet tea, the be-all, end-all of tasty.

that looks similar taro, I love taro ice cream!

The best ice cream I have ever had was in French Polynesia.

I make a triple chocolate ice cream (2 types of chocolate and chocolate liquor) which I often blend in an irish cream white chocolate mousse right as I'm done freezing it. (or just use it as a topping)

Typically when I'm trying to impress a date.

Am I really going to have to be the first one to point out that "Top 10 Grossest" is horribly redundant? Not only that but TFA author admits that the article is a "quick outline" and "by no means a complete catalog." And the article author didn't even taste test anything on the list, he just decided that these ice cream flavors were icky by sight and/or sound.

So not only are these ice cream flavors not verified to be the "top ten grossest", they're not even verified to be gross, period. And if you count the inclusion of corn ice cream (which is the only valid inclusion on the list since the author actually had some), it's not even a list of ten flavors. So the article fails on every single count.

I'd love to try all of those. The only non-normal ice cream I've ever had was red bean, which isn't really challenging at all. I need to feel alive with a double scoop of raw horse flesh and parmesan ice cream!

Also, who the hell doesn't like chicken fried steak? That stuff is godly with mashed potatoes and white gravy, some fried okra and sweet tea. Annnnnnd now I'd kill to get some. Goddammit there's no way in hell I'd be able to find that anywhere near me.

For those of you in the northern Chicagoland area wanting to sample a variety of different flavors, check out Village Creamery (new window).

I've tried the durian ice cream (which isn't listed for some reason). It's much more palatable than the fresh fruit (tastier, even). At least you don't need to bathe, wash your clothes, and fumigate the area after eating the ice cream.

Durian has a very "funky" taste. Some people can get used to it, some people can't. I'm not one of them. At least the ice cream doesn't smell so much and the coldness tones down the weird taste, but the raw fruit has a rather slimy texture and smells pretty much like ripe garbage.

Paris, that link was awesome! That brought back some, not always tasty memories! We lived in Japan for 2 years, To the Japanese ice cream isn't just a dessert, it can be a 7 course meal {just add a crepe!} If you ever get a chance, try 'sakura cherry blossom' a cherry blend that is very light and refreshing and bean paste is a huge fav. Stay away from 'spinach' bok choy' shrimp' and 'sushi' flavors. You will never want ice cream again, evar!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Porous Horace, you have to go way south to get authentic flavor. Oklahoma and Texas are the best, Utah adds less sugar and more salt to their batter. Apparently Californians don't know what gravy is, a must if you want the full experience. And try both regular and Texas style chicken fried steak {double dipped for an extra crunchy coating} And try chicken fried chicken, the same greasy goodness wrapped around a pounded chickem breast {to help support the delusion you are eating heathy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chandie, I worked at Babe's in Roanoke when they first opened in '93. Absolutely the best fried chicken evar! Much more expensive now but still worth the price!

Olive Tapenade Ice Cream is fantastic.
It's just regular tapenade with some butter and all the usual flavorings like truffles, garlic and balsamic vinegar and doesn't actually melt. It was served with toasted bread points and was great as a spread, better than foie gras

good less common ice creams i have eaten:
- durian
- lemon
- sesame

- any kind that is blue
- olive
- cherry (not weird, but still icky)

Molly Moon's here in Seattle has delicious flavors that, while not gross by any means, are certainly less common. My favorite is Salted Caramel but I also enjoy Balsamic Strawberry and Pomegranate Curry. They did an excellent bacon-flavored one for a while. Well, um... keep running :)

I was referring to St_Aubin ice cream parlour which was on Laurentian (now Marcel Laurin) blvd, in St-Laurent (a suburb of Montreal), Quebec. I imagine that it and the nearby St-Aubin street (which I did live on for a couple of years, many years later) were named after a saint. My guess is "Aubin".

Blue Fudge was a tastalicious discovery.
Seemed to never be hard-frozen, melted quickly.
