As long as they don't take our chefs here in Louisville.

Subby should eat this, exclusively.

Is that some kind of wierd SF euphemism?

"it has been nominated as one of the world's 100 worst invaders". uh. i'm all for a healthy dose of panic, like any other rational red-blooded american. but it's... kelp. i seriously doubt this should necessitate a vote for promenant placement on the Homeland Security terrorist list.

"The seaweed concerns marine biologists because it can damage fragile ocean ecosystems by choking off the sunlight needed by native kelps. The native kelp forests provide key habitat for otters, fish and other marine life."

So... the native wildlife can't live in this new type of kelp forest why?

I think what we need is Bond, James Bond.

With his animal magnetism and knowledg of oriental ways he can convince thousands of naked female Japanese Ama perl divers to relocate to SF where they will dive and just eat the delicious sea-weed. No need for payments because their bellies will be full AND they they will be more attractive for the tourists who like to watch sea lions.

I'm no marine biologist, but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say the new type of kelp can damage the native kelp by choking off the sunlight needed by said kelp. But that's just a random guess.

Yes, in SF's gay community "sushi chef" originated as a term for a gay cockblocker because of what the action of the chef cutting the sushi roll resembles. "Kelp", on the other hand, came to be used as at term for very unfabulous flowing gay dresses (as in "how can you wear that tacky kelp"), because of its flowing clingy wet appearance and very ugly color. Putting 2 and 2 together, you can see how "sushi chef" has come to be used as term for someone who harvests "kelp".

I'm talking about the other native wildlife, the article is making it seem that without the native kelp the furry critters won't have a place to live anymore. I'm pretty sure they'll get along just fine in this new kelp forest.

Otters eat sea urchins and other shellfish...And sea urchins eat kelp. If the new kelp isn't good grazing food for the sea urchins, no otters.

"On any invasion, the window of opportunity to successfully eradicate that species is usually narrow,"

You know who else wanted to eradicate a species?

Just because the kelp is "6-foot long" and "there is nothing here in the bay that gets to that size" it's no reason to go around hacking it off at the base. Really now!

Good guess.

Also, caulerpa is another invasive species that wasn't mentioned, but it actually outlawed in California. Does the same thing, but is great for aquariums since it helps natural filtration and reduces nitrates. In the wild? It just takes over everything.

Aye, we've had an explosion of good sushi places come here in the past 5-10 years.

Ichiban is still my favorite. Great prices, great selection, sushi is excellent, and it's 5 minutes away from my work. I go there for lunch about once a week.

"Because of its wide range, it has been nominated as among 100 of the world's worst invaders, according to the Global Invasive Species Database."

Which puts it about 40 places behind Kudzu, and 70 behind Americans.

I have never had sushi in SF. There is a super good sushi restaurant in San Jose - though I don't remember the name. The restaurant had a bulletin board full of customer business cards. I know, not very helpful.

So, pretty much like the best way of removing carbon dioxide from the local ocean waters.
Or you can kill it and have more pristine beaches.

/doesn't know anything about the oceanic ecology in the eastern Pacific
//perhaps they can tax it.

First the Salmon fishing dries up then kelp invading?Gee there might be some corelation to all that fresh water that is being diverted to the central valley. The fresh water that WAS flushing the Bay...

We wipe out species all the time, we should be able to wipe this one out. Maybe if kudzu can kill it...
