Palin has an audience for as long as she desires one. Which is exactly the problem: the longer she talks, the longer it takes for the GOP to divest themselves of her particular brand of stupid, taking them that much longer to recover.

The economy may suck, but even if Obama doesn't have it on the turnaround by the midterms, the GOP still has to field credible opposition or else Obama has extra time gifted to him.

The problem is that Palin speaks to those who the Republican's identify as their "base".

If the Republicans embrace Palin to appease their base, they lose elections.

If the Republicans reject Palin and alienate their base, they lose elections.

More people turned out at the rallies to see Palin than McCain. She was the reason the Republican ticket showed any sign of life in the last election.

W/o Palin, it's easy to imagine the Republican base staying home on election night, or, more likely, voting 3rd party

Christianity is actually becoming less important.
Soon this great nation will be de-Christianized.

Never, not in your wildest dreams. If anything, this country is becoming stronger in its duty to God, and again, you're going to have to find out the hard way when Palin (or her designee) becomes the 45th President of the United States, defeating Obama in the worst upset ever.

Mark my words, the Republicans will return with a vengeance, overturning the superficial yet horridly expensive Obama years. They will be a footnote in time.

But we're also aware that you liberals aren't going to relinquish your hold without a fight, and that's sadly your undoing. If you'd only do the honorable thing and realize that Mom and Dad are coming home and will see the mess you've made, and you will be sorely dealt with. That metaphor colorfully paints the spirit of the times, and just how fragile your short-lived control will prove.

And I'm always astounded at the overwhelming sense of denial in the liberal nomenclature. Seriously, take a look around you. HALF, yes HALF of the country is preparing to rally around Palin (or her designee) come 2012.

I mean.... you really think so? Because, it's just... you know that you can't win an election by just believing really hard, right? Other people also have to agree with you. A lot of other people. Like... you can't have a minority opinion and still win, no matter how right you think you are.

And before you even start, I'm Eastern Orthodox. Practically noone else particularly likes particular type of Christianity(which is the closest to the original church, I might add). Even the Catholics don't particularly like us. The whole point of this rant is that atheists are not the only target for fundie bigotry.

Your feeble rants are no match for the power of the Atheist Side.

Oh. You're just being silly. How foolish of me to have not noticed.

You didn't notice that I was merely paraphrasing "Star Wars" quotes?

Yeah, but... he keeps pulling them out, it was starting to get impressive. I in the middle of typing up a snarky comment about Christian advances to art and architecture just to see if he could keep it up, but he's stopped doing it now. The magic's over.

Troggie42: lol, politics. i wonder what would happen if a fark politics thread was told to rule the country for a week? what would happen? it would surely be entertaining until we had to live with it.

Well, most of the religious types would get a beatdown mandated by law, which really wouldn't be a bad thing for all the shiat they've put the world through. We'd combine new activites, like eating bacon and farking. When not farking, we'd require daily "nudity class" and hang out at strip joints. We'd only serve beer, and squirrels would be easy to catch due to their oversized testicles. And Admiral Akbar speed trap pop-ups along the side of the road would be mandatory to warn you of an upcoming speed trap. A submitter gets his shiat jumped for using an apostrophe incorrectly. Am I missing anything else? What other Fark cliche can we throw in, here?

Basically, a right wing Republican's worst nightmare, which makes me think it wouldn't be so bad. ;-)

So, am I alone in thinking that it would be the most bad-ass thing ever if Obama actually converted to Islam?

No seriously, just think about it for a minute - if he gets a second term, and three years in, the economy starts to recover (I know it's wishful thinking, leave me alone), and then he gets up and says "You know what? I AM a Muslim now." Would be the biggest "fark you" to right-wing fundies ever; the only way to top that would be if he did that and then immediately turned around and made out with Rush's mom.

Sure, but what's a horrific national tragedy next to a really good 'your mom' joke?

Besides, too many people in this country have too many retarded ideas about Islam. After the initial shock, once people realize that a Muslim president isn't driving the country into the ground, Islam may finally get some decent press on this side of the Atlantic, which would do leagues of good towards reducing the ignorance and xenophobia towards the religion. Could you imagine? A world where everyone on the other side of the planet isn't seen as some kind of infidel sub-human?

Just because the only Christians we hear about are the Westbourough baptists doesn't mean that all - or even a majority of - Christians are fundamentalist, hate-driven, whackjobs. I am fully aware of that (hence the "most vocal segments" part of my comment). My own impression is that there's generally an inverse relationship between how loudly one proclaims one's beliefs and how closely one truly adheres to them.

Maybe somebody thought that the two are linked because of those similarities.

It's less subtle than that. I think last election season, whidbey (who is slightly to the left of Mao) made a post as himself under skookum (who is slightly to the right of Ann Coulter).

So, basically, he accidentally outed himself. Same as McCainDemocrat/danlpoon (who famously replied to an inquiry as to his whereabouts with "I'm traveling"), save for the fact that the 'poon is an actual right-winger.

According to Fark:

(a) Attractive = good

(b) Batshiat crazy = bad
if also (a), then just for the sex, bonus if redhead

(c) Guns = mostly neutral good
if carried by (a), HAWT
if carried by (b), RUN
if carried by both (a, b), intriguing in a self-immolating way

(d) Palin = comedy
if also (a), comedy
if also (b), comedy
if also (c), comedy

Seems fair.

No permit to carry concealed AND you get paid oil dividends to live there? Methinks I'm packing for Alaska.

Virginia has an open-carry law. But Goddamn, the cops will harrass the crap out of you if you do.

"Why are you carrying a gun?"
'Because I can'
"But why? You gonna shoot someone?"
'Wasn't planning on it.'
"You got drugs on you?"
'Why would you even think that?'
"Well then, why do you need a gun? I am gonna search you and run your serial numbers to make sure the gun isn't stolen"
'I was just walking down the street'
"With a gun. I am also gonna cuff you for my safety AFTER I confiscate your gun"
*30 minutes and a thorough search later*
"Ok, you dont have any drugs on you and your gun is clean. Have a nice day"
*2 blocks and a passing squad car later*
"Hey, why do you have a gun?"
*rinse and repeat*

In VA, you can open carry, but you damn well better plan for 2 hours to walk 4 blocks.

Yes, it is. You really dont see the difference?

This. For republicans, anyway. The right has no one good in the party who is in a position to win any elections, really. It kinda sucks, and as we can see from this thread, the nice folks on the left are kinda being sore winners about it. I don't really give a shiat about who wins either way, but I would prefer that it is someone I voted for. I truly believe that we need a third party that could, oh, I dunno, actually FIX some of the problems with the country, rather than argue between two parties filibustering each other and rambling on about how bipartisan this is, and how the other people aren't being bipartisan enough, and all that nonsense. No, it is that the younger generations are raised violently liberal and anything they do not agree with is attacked. You see it in public schools, on college campuses and in the media. Palin is attacked in the most nasty way possible, and yet you elected Biden as VP, the guy is a walking foot in the mouth. Young liberals hand fed their entire lives getting the ability to vote from Mom's basement is what this is about. It will backfire, because the tax and spend and tax policy in the long run will cripple us.

I hate religion, but you know what? It is a person's right, just like free speech which the Dems are attacking as well. Your Lord and Savior Obama claims to be religious as well, why don't you attack him about it?

Or we could "go full retard" (as the Democrats would put it) and back Palin. She IS still quite popular and would energize the Republican base. And if Obama sends the country down the tubes (as he seems likely to do), then a good size bloc of Democrats will sit 2012 out, just as the Republicans sat out 2008.

It's more likely than you think. Bush and Rove convinced them they should participate in civil elections, and now that they have the apparatus in place, thanks to faith-based initiatives, and the looney pay-for-play church leaders to tell them who to vote for, all they need is a candidate to hitch their wagons to. But that candidate must be hella fundie crazy, and only Huckabee and Palin meet that criteria. Both are unelectable in a general elections thanks to, well, GW Bush and a tide of anti-fundamentalism.

A Jebus party is a possibility.

However, should the GOP just call down and go back to nominating a fundie wing-nut, for the sake of courting those votes, as they did with Bush, then we are in for, well, Armageddon.

Ok, since I'm kinda a low key farker, and I'm not sure I mentioned it before, I'm an active duty infantry/now National Guard MP. I'll lay odds that Sarah Palin's son is going to come back from Iraq with a LOT of liberal ideas, not because of some kind of hate, but because SOME of us in the uniform think our country can be better than it is, that it can improve. When I hear some type of chickenhawk like Sean Hannty or Ted Nugent (whatever) talk about America this or that, I always think about how I would never listen to a guy who talks about military action but has never served, and the other guy who epic failed himself out of honor. Screw them both.

Mark my words, the Republicans will return with a vengeance, overturning the superficial yet horridly expensive Obama years. They will be a footnote in time.

But we're also aware that you liberals aren't going to relinquish your hold without a fight, and that's sadly your undoing. it is only on the Friday show. two whole hours once a week to talk about guns... believe me it is a hell of a lot more interesting and almost an intellectual pursuit compared to the same hosts show every other day of the week.

as in : you learn things on the gun show most the time... during the week it is any other echo chamber... only with an extra big helping of crazy.

the station doesn't screen calls and even lacks caller ID so it's the same nutcases calling in 24 hours a day basically about whatever new chain letter they received about FEMA death squads or secret muslims or keeping freedom free blippity blap blarrrrr.

it's totally entertaining though.

i know no one is actually even talking about the show that Palin and Nugent were on... but i'm willing to bet the audio is available in the "Loyal Listener Club" on the actual station website.

KFAR 660AM (new window)

i'd look for it myself... but i am not a loyal listener nor do i feel like navigating on their nightmare of a site (tried it before. never again.)

here are some paraphrased quotes from when i listened to it :

Nugent on Palin : "you are too logical. you make too much sense. that's why all the bureaucrats are running scared of you!"

Some Caller : "one thing we need to have nationwide is closed primaries... that way we won't keep getting these centrist candidates running as supposed 'republicans'. i may have voted for McCain but i was really truly voting for you Sarah."

(that one i just remembered since it pisses me off every primary season that i can't have both ballots or a combined ballot. i've been undeclared since i started voting ages ago and closed primaries really bug me. they only encourage excessive bifurcation IMO.)

probably some others i forgot or missed. i was running errands at the time and missed a few calls.

Yes, because the reason people voted for Obama was because, and only because, he was part black. It wasn't because of his policies, or that McCain and (especially) Palin would have been worse, by several orders of magnitude.

Now THAT is a bad sign for the Republicans, losing the racist vote, losing the vote of people who are literally holding their noses to vote for someone whose skin color makes them 'inferior'.

Personally, I think Sarah Palin played a large part in that.

Ted Nugent - who once pulled out a gun on a soundman when he muted the deafening trash coming out of the stage monitors and said "I can hit you from here" - has been playing the same clapped out riffs at the same jet-plane-during-takeoff dB level for the same 45 years.

Now his major selling point is "I AM THE ALPHA BADASS!"

Well, when you consider street interviews with black people who were given McCain's policies and told they were Obama's, and asked what they think of "Obama's" policies that the black people interviewed were praising those policies as if they knew anything about it, yes, it was about race. your Palin argument is silly because you have Biden, the king of idiot-speak as a VP now. When you have black voters saying, and I quote "Obama is gonna pay my mortgage", "You're about to be ruled be a black man, Cracker!", and "Obama's gonna give me mo' money" you really do have to question race, because it sure as shiat is not about policy at that point.

I could care less what color Obama is, I don't like excessive taxes and out of control spending. To question him is to be called a racist, how silly is that?

Epsilon: I think a lot of the conservatives have some sort of misunderstanding that the liberals (of which I am one) want to do away with all guns. That's not the case at all.

Most of us liberals feel that registration should be required, and what's wrong with that? You have to register a car before you can drive it, what's so horrible about having to register a firearm?

Handguns are already registered. If you're referring to registering long rifles, well that's just insane and it will never, ever pass anywhere in America except for California and New York. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't already requiring it in those states. I honestly feel sorry for the New Yorkers that don't live in the city. But yeah, my neighbor is a full-blooded liberal, and he enjoys coming over and shooting around in the backyard. Not all liberals are crazy, just the leftists in certain concentrated areas that for whatever reason, have alot of political sway. Looking at you Berkeley.

Laugh if you must, but that's how Reagan got into office in 1980.

It really seems that all that anyone does these days is biatch about what the other side is saying about them, and it is quite annoying and juvenile. I truly believe that we need a third party that could, oh, I dunno, actually FIX some of the problems with the country, rather than argue between two parties filibustering each other and rambling on about how bipartisan this is, and how the other people aren't being bipartisan enough, and all that nonsense. There's really only one issue left talking about with her. Honestly she was only ever really "republican hot". Not many liberals have to go reaching for her and Ann Coulter (she's a man baby!) for politically leaned sex sympbols, not when we have Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johannson on our side. For reals. I thought this place was relatively sane until she won the governor's seat. Yeah, I love that little boston. The problem I'm having (in life) is with people who immediately thread-jack or conversation-jack anything and everything with its nearest pop-culture equivalent. People who cannot live life originally, but must couch their existence in the context of television and movies, and go through great lengths to do so.

Here are some that have well worn out their welcome to the point that if you post it, I can be relatively sure you are a douchebag:

- "sharp knees" post w/ picture

- libs! libs! libs! straight-jacket
- IR serious cat

- internet argument special olympics
- Saying I get a kick, etc. etc.

Sorry Charlie but we're no where near a Theocracy and despite your blubbering and wailing, nobody is trying to make us into one.

You have two policies, count them again, two, that many lean on their religion for, however, the argument they put forth in both cases, has very little to do with a particular religion. That too makes it less of a theocracy.

Abortion: Has more to do with a belief in life at conception which does not equate to any particular religion and is certainly not the sole bailiwick of Christianity.

Gay Marriage: Has more to do with tradition and what people see as the natural order of things; this too has very little to do with any particular religion and is also not the sole bailiwick of Christianity.

So please, lay off the whole Theocracy and Fundies are destroying our country Bullshait. Two policy positions that have absolutely nothing to do with larger economic or law enforcement issues is a far damn cry from a Theocracy or even a theocratic movement.

Wally Hickel winning as an AIP.... Theresa Obermeyer running for *anything* (and *everything*), the oil and real estate influences, the Prevites, the hunters vs. subsistence lobbies, the GOP fighting for the Socialist Fund, the fundamentalists...

The place is out and out nuts.

I have to be honest here, I am very guilty of throwing pop culture references down all the time. I do try to do my own. I always post pics of movies and TV .

I still think that "libs" straight jacket is still funny and the variants it has sprung "Kos!" for example.

I listened to some blowhard (Dan Caplis) on KHOW one night last week while stuck in traffic. He does a show with Mr. Spineless Pussy, who allows Dan to biatchslap him around most of the time.

Caplis pronounced "it's clear the Obama presidency has been a failure" early on in the show - it was maybe Wednesday (7/8).

SO, 6 months in, the "other side" has declared failure. Mind you, this was the same blowhard who lectured about all things "his side" - give it time.

Iraq - give it time. this won't fix in a day, month, maybe years

Remember Bush admitted early on that he had no plan for pulling out of Iraq - that would be up to the next president.

And yet, 6 months into Bama's reign, it's a failure.

//assholes are as bad as the "other side" biatching non-stop about Bushie & Co.

I love that some Americans have racism so deeply imprinted in them that they are willing to support someone like Palin.

Pretend you are from another country, and race wasn't an issue for 10 seconds. If necessary, now is the time to take strong drugs in order to get you to that point.

Obama is a charismatic man who wants the best for American and is doing a pretty damn good job. He is obviously not perfect and will make mistakes along the way. But hell, Clinton made some small mistakes personally but took the country on an amazing upswing. Obama is also obviously quite smart and will be in a good position to make good choices.

Now look at Palin. She is borderline retarded. She can't speak for more than 10 seconds without having to revert to trying to sound cute and folksy with some sports or hick talk. This is a woman I wouldn't want controlling my local PTA let alone a state or being VP.

How the hell can you folks seriously defend her with such rigor? Is staying racist really that important?

I also never understood how people could defend GW Bush. He is an idiot, handed the control of the country to the wrong people who behind the scenes sacrificed the core principles of the country.

But instead of looking objectively at the situation, somehow you all get caught up in the Dems vs Reps debate. Who the fark cares what party is running the country - elect the best goddamn people who will do a good job and not destroy the economy.

Or just vote based on party and celebrity and the whole country can follow California's bankruptcy. Then you will realize this whole situation could have been avoided by spending 5 minutes of your life actually researching politicians and not listening to the horrifically skewed media.

...because offering the woman an interview then letting her hoist herself on her own petard on national television was somehow intentionally done to support Obama? Did you even watch the Sawyer interview? No amount of editing or selective questioning (although I would say hardballing a dark horse vice presidential nominee, regardless of secondary characteristics like party affiliation, gender, education, or past political experience, is not just warranted but exactly what journalists ought to do) could put a silver lining on that woman. Not even Fox News could do it.

As far as Tina Fey goes...she's a comedian. It's her job to point out society's idiosyncrasies and dysfunctions for comedic effect. Saturday Night Live has been doing that for years, regardless of party or personal opinion (though to inconsistent levels of efficacy). If a public figure is a fool, it's a comedian's job to make a fool of them when nobody else will do it.

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.

Thomas Pain.

Good job at leaving out parts to fit your beliefs.

Here is the FULL Quote:

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.
I do not mean by this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their belief as I have to mine. But it is necessary to the happiness of man, that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.
It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so...

Yes, yes she is. There is well-reasoned, rational dissent which breeds intelligent discourse and should be tolerated by anyone with a brain, and there is Sarah Palin's ideology and methodology. Ne'er have the two met, and as far as I can tell ne'er shall they meet.

humm Obama is averaging 60% approval rating, and the smallest percentage of Americans are willing to admit that they are republicans in the last 75 years so i would love to know where the HALF of the country you are talking about it at. i am going to strongly suggest that you up your medication and come live in the real world for a while, in the mean time i am putting you on ignore don't take it personal its just that you are so stupid it hurts and sadly the only cure for someone as far gone as you are is death (not that i would encourage you to kill yourself but if you do want to give it a try there was a nice headline yesterday about a guy that used his car to cut off his head may want to give it a try).

Obama's approval rating is more like 52-58% depending upon where you get your propaganda from. It has dropped 3% just in the first 8 days of July. Once Cap and Trade Tax go into afect and people see excessive high costs for gas and electricity/heat, my guess is his rating will nosedive.

Honestly, if you ask me Obama's fiscal policy has been thus far very lukewarm in comparison to what the country needs. I personally would have been much happier had he focused less on bailouts and more on public works and spending for infrastructure and heavy industry modernization and maintenance, education, and the like. Cap-and-trade is counterproductive to the need for America to modernize its heavy industry and infrastructure, in my opinion. Health care reform needs to happen, and if done right could be integrated into a larger public works scheme, but that won't happen.

I'll add some more to tell your friend regarding Sarah Palin:

Alaska has a smaller population than Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Milwaukee County is a predominately Democrat county (it's so blue even the racist rednecks there vote democrat) and it's run by a Republican county executive.

It goes without saying the guy has had a target on his back for years, to include baseless ethics charges. But he hangs in there, and doesn't blame anyone when things don't go his own way. Contrast that with Sarah Palin, who quits when the going gets tough.

It's a very strange form of cognitive dissonance. Neocons have consistently shown that they are incapable of admitting error, so when they screw up as badly as they did from 2001-2008, the only way for them to deal with it is to withdraw into their own fantasy world.

Yes, it is. You really dont see the difference?

I guess a better question is, what exactly is your argument? Are you saying that believing in god is not as rediculous as believing in santa? Or are you saying that it's impolite to make fun of people that believe in sky-wizards?

Either way I disagree with you, but I'm curious as to exactly what kind of crazy i'm dealing with here.

My argument is that you can believe whatever you want, but you reduce yourself to a fundie's level when you act like an ass about it. Is calling a devout person a gullible idiot who can't have an intelligent thought one bit different from a fundie calling an atheist a godless heathen?

Er....yes, as it's completely accurate. Evolution proponents are hard on creationists around here too, do you admonish them for being 'just as bad'? Probably not as you recognize one side to be entirely correct and the other to hold backwards, indefensible beliefs that are harming the country. It's the same for atheists and Christians.

No it isn't, you twit. There is a difference between calling people who refuse to acknowledge a mountain of scientific proof because of their faith idiots(which they are), and claiming anyone who happens to be a religious person holds "backwards, indefensible beliefs that are harming the country". Explain to me how me being a Christian harms you or the country one bit.

And before you start, yes, people DO try to legislate religion. THEIR religion. Which kinda becomes stupid when you count up all the different branches of Christianity. And there are plenty of Christians who do believe in the separation of church and state. Ignoring that the Bible says to do that anyway, there is the problem of all the varying branches of Christianity. What is taboo in one is a-okay in another. Besides, as I said upthread, the people who try to force said laws through are CINOs. They ignore all the important parts of Jesus' teachings, namely Peace and Love for your fellow man.

Besides, only the fundies are stupid enough to deny evolution. The rest of Christianity is quite capable of understanding science.

Total BS.

Firstly, there is no such SSS classification as "WF".

Someone might make the weak attempt to claim it "really" is "4F", but I think an official draft board would make damn sure it was written clearly.

But more importantly, the last dated classification, 15 Dec. 72, occurs 5 years before the document being used was issued. (1977)

In My Humble Opinion, It's a total fake.
