Not a big city thing, but the big-box stores (Home Depot, etc.) all make such HUGE parking lots it would seemingly take the entire region's population to fill just one lot. I can't imagine they'll ever, ever, ever be more than 3/4 full, even back when the economy was good.

There's a K-Mart parking lot nearby that perpetually has the empty space of Rhode Island.

gregscott [TotalFark] 2009-07-12 01:17:59 AM
sounds like an opportunity. All those forclosed families would probably rent a space if the parking garages added a shower and a toilet.

FTFA: Consequently, AAA's overall revenues are down 15 percent and the company has responded with layoffs of its own.

AAA has outsourced some of its parking lots to India, with convenient tram service to your car:

Wake up people!!

Empty parking spaces cost city and county governments millions of not billions of dollars each and every year in America.

With a financial crisis as severe as we are experiencing now we cannot afford to waste that kind of money. Schools, roads, and bridges are literally crumbling around us all over America.

Millions of dumb Americans are in favor of another stimulus bill to help this economy when the first one hasnt been given a chance to work.

They need to support the Parking Reduction Act of 2009.

Call your Congressmembers and Senators now!

I've noticed this at the train station lately... more and more open parking spaces. Used to be packed by 6:50 AM... past 8 months or so, always walk by about 50 spots.

Guy from private lot who used to wave people into his very expensive lot doesn't even bother anymore. The cheaper daily parking is too available for him to compete right now. I think he mostly fills up, but not as easily.

Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. "Voodoo" economics.

Will you know people in heaven?
Most Atlantans agree that in the afterlife, we will see and know people we knew on Earth
The roadways in heaven are for walking and for vehicles.
Yes, there are transportation vehicles in Heaven, driven by the Angels.
However, there is no pollution there.

This isn't surprising: who would want to go downtown? I wouldn't. Perhaps our city (Atlanta) should consider doing something about crime. Is anyone else here up on the crimes around the GA Tech campus? It's sickening.

The jobs, wealth, etc. have been moving out of the city for 25+ years, despite efforts to reinvigorate (develop, glavanize, gentrify, whatever you want to call it) areas of town. Now the economy takes a downturn and people feel like this is a good time to write about it. Too late.

If I wanted to host a convention, Atlanta would be toward the bottom of my list of possible places.

But the recession hasn't persuaded parking garage owners or managers to significantly changes their rates. A study done last month on parking rates worldwide found that parking rates are holding steady. Few cities have seen a "significant pullback in parking rates," according to Colliers International's 2009 Parking Rate Survey. The survey tracks 64 North American markets.

DEAR AAA Parking, MAYBE no one is using your parking spaces because NO ONE wants to pay the TWENTY FREAKING DOLLARS TO PARK THERE FOR THREE FREAKING HOURS. Sooooo here's a giant violin why don't you shove it up your ass. Sorry I have not an ounce of empathy for parking nazis in the downtown atlanta area.

If every parking slot was filled in a Home Depot, Lowes, Shop Rite, Acme etc., you would not be able to get in the front door of the store. The building could not hold that many people.

I often wondered why, especially in urban areas, they build such huge parking lots when they know darn well they will never be fully used. Our local Target has a lot that is maybe three times the size of the store, and I have never seen it even 1/4 full, even at christmas. I've noticed lately that Target and other larger retailers are using much of their lots to store trailers and assorted junk. Very attractive.

If the AJC keeps publishing this sort of obvious story, their parking lot will be empty too. Actually it's getting that way!

I'm having trouble grasping the concept of paying for parking at a hotel. Is this like a "southern" thing? I've never heard of this practice and I sure as fark would not stay in any hotel that didn't provide free parking. In fact I can't remember the last time I stayed at one that didn't have free VALET parking.

I'm guessing that the operators of AAA Parking would shiat themselves if they ever saw the Vegas strip and all those gigantic FREE garages.

Yeah, I won't go into downtown Atlanta unless I'm armed (unless I'm working, which means I can't). I haven't heard that they've solved any of the crimes at GT, which sound like they're being perpetrated by some quite unpleasant people. Nothing like robbing someone and then shooting them in the back.

A little bit related, but I've noticed that the roads seem to be a little less crowded, esp during rush hour, on Illinois roads/highways. Anyone else notice it or am I just dreaming it up?

On the flip side, Philadelphia just cancelled a parking meter rate hike (which SHOCKED me) because the street spaces hit the desired vacancy rate.

If the parking lot at a big box store looks full, customers think the store is full and keep driving. It is psychology.

Plus, they do fill up a few days per year in many places.

I've had to pay to park at inner city hotels in a number of cities (LA, San Diego, Phoenix). Of course, you can avoid it by staying the suburbs.
