pureobscure: HairBolus: that 90 percent of French people did their traveling at home.

Before the ignorant USA is #1 crowd chimes in, what percentage of Americans do their traveling at home? What percentage have even been to Canada or Mexico?

America is something like 25 times the size of France. That means there's a whole lot more to see. And I'd bet that there's a LOT more than 90% of Americans who've traveled outside the U.S. So what's your point, dipshiat?

Yeah, nothing like shopping at a different Walmart to get all cultured up.

LittleSmitty: lenina4sammy: LittleSmitty: Worst tourist I've met in Florida were English. Japanese were the most polite and quite friendly. German tourists seemed pretty OK too. Swedes were pretty cool. Never encountered any Frenchies. Canadians just blend right in with little notice.

In my mind, seeing over-sized German men in speedos takes the Germans off the "OK" list. Plus I haven't been able to think about Blizzard Beach in Orlando without having a flashback for the last 15 years...

Well I suppose that would be a bit unsettling. The Germans I met were quite nice, though it wasn't on the beach. It helps I have a German surname I suppose

In all fairness, they were extremely polite and tried to engage me in conversation after I inadvertently used the little bit of German I knew. I think the Germans just have a different concept of "figure-appropriate" apparel than I do. True, though, it doesn't make them bad tourists. I'm sure they tipped well.

Riiight....because the only worthwhile travel in the U.S. involves visiting retail shops. I'll be one of the last people to say negative things about foreign travel, but just think of all the fantastic vacation opportunities we have:

Hawaii
Yellowstone National Park
Glacier National Park
Lake Chelan
Crater Lake
Lake Tahoe
The wine regions of CA, OR, and WA.
The coastal areas of CA, OR, and WA.
Las Vegas
Miami
Key West
Alaska
Etc.

I've been to Canada, before passports were necessary, it was nice.
But since the U.S.A. is about, say 3 to 4 times bigger than any given European country, I'd say not many travel abroad. It's not like we have any backwards high speed trains going anywhere. We have us some car$$$. And riddle me this, who doesn't think the South, Utah and Florida aren't their own countries?

FTFY.

I've been to Canada, but only because I happened to see the exit sign to Windsor while I was driving around Ohio one weekend for something to do. No passport needed then (not that I would have had any clue if they were). The lady just waved me through and after getting some colorful money I spent the rest of the day doing exiting things like eating at Hardee's, visiting a local supermarket (loved seeing all the soda being sold in cartons of glass bottles, very nostalgic), then driving out in the country and visiting a few small towns. Glad I was able to go before all the anti-turr bs kicked in.

Note that the notion of 'best tourist' comes from a poll of Hotel owners. To them 'best' means those from who can be made the most money and who cause the least problems.

In this sense the overall rankings are:

1. Japanese
2. British
3. Canadians
4. Germans
5. Swiss
6. Dutch
6. Australians
8. Swedish
8. Americans
10. Danes
10. Norwegians
10. Finnish
10. Belgians
14. Austrian
14. New Zealanders
16. Thais
17. Portuguese
17. Czechs
19. Italians
19. Irish
19. Brazilians
22. Polish
22. South Africans
24. Turkish
24. Greeks
26. Spanish
27. French

I wonder why they included Canadians but not Americans.

MasterShakezula: HairBolus: Before

Are you serious? I took the train from London to France in under 2.5 hours. It takes more time to go from LA to Tijuana, and almost as long as Buffalo to Toronto. North America is huge compared to Europe. It's not a fair comparison.

Thank you! I get so sick and tired of Europeans complaining Americans never go to other countries. Some dutch guy I was arguing with was criticizing Americans for not having passports which "every European has." I told him we didn't NEED passports to travel within the states, it's all the same country. In addition, at the time, you didn't need a passport to get into Canada or Mexico either. He was shocked.

Europeans live in a much smaller place with many different cultures. The USA is a bigger place with mostly the same culture, but many different landmarks. There also isn't as great a transportation system in the US as in Europe.

Europeans are so remarkably arrogant. They might pride themselves on their Euro-Centric "world view", but if it comes to anything USA they like to BASH BASH BASH.

Japanese tourists are the best. My sister and brother-in-law renewed their vows in Vegas last year. It was a 70s-themed wedding and my BIL was wearing a leisure suit and platform heels. He's already tall and the heels put him close to 7 feet. We went out to dinner afterward and a group of Japanese girls at the next table came over and begged him to let them take a picture with him. It was hilarious. As they didn't speak much English we never did find out what it was all about, but my theory is that they thought he was Disco Godzilla.

HairBolus: Before the ignorant USA is #1 crowd chimes in, what percentage of Americans do their traveling at home? What percentage have even been to Canada or Mexico?

I've traveled more of Canada and Mexico than most Canadians or Mexicans. I don't think your statement is very fair. The truth is the vast majority of people in ANY country may not be able to travel any great distance. It's easy if you live in a border town/state/province, but if you live in the center of a large expansive country, its far more difficult to travel outside your country.

Being well traveled doesn't make you smarter, more informed, or better than anyone else. It just means you are well traveled.

But it does tend to make you less ignorant about foreign cultures. How many ignorant folks hating on the French and demanding "freedom fries" knew anything about France other than what Bill O'Reilly told them.

I've traveled some in Eastern, Southern, and Western Europe. If you are adventurous you will come across Turkish toilets.

Many Americans on tours are protected from such experiences because it will start them screaming and demanding to be sent back to the good old USA rather than appreciating that non-luxury may mean different toilet fixtures.

I work in an office building that is on the edge of Chinatown in San Francisco. It seems like the French tourists are always rushing to get someplace, and travel in large packs, or in perfect little families of mommy, daddy and three little children dressed in Euro-tot tourist-wear.

While I like France, and the French, when in their natural environment, I tend to want to punch them in the face when I have to maneuver around a gaggle of them on Grant Street, and listen to their irritating nasal droning.
