Why are there no pics of the uniform (preferably worn by non-"plus size" girls) in the article?

what a hot stewardess might wear at work

The point we are missing is who wants a size 28 flight attendant anyway. That would seem to me to be a real hazard during an emergency evacuation. It is bad enough to have passengers that size, but a 280+ pound man or woman trying to wedge himself or herself into the small area to open the over wing window is just plain dangerous.

I was just thinking the same thing. A flight attendant has to be able to help in the event of an evacuation, not function as a cork bottling up the emergency exit. Plus, if they're wider than the food and beverage trolley, imagine the chaos that would create whenever food and drinks are served. Crushed toes from the trolley, and the sound of men weeping as their overpriced beers are knocked to the ground in defeat before they've had a chance to party in their livers.

I just took a flight on United where my stewardess was wider than the trolley AND wider than the aisle. Every time she went by, her ass smacked me in the arm or shoulder. All. Farking. Flight. And during the (mercifully short) beverage service, her ass was in my face for a full 10 minutes while everyone got their partial can of juice and someone ran back to the galley 3 separate times for 3 snackboxes. Of course, she was a biatch, too, and insisted on blessing people and pushing the Left Behind series (and its theology) on her long-suffering co-worker.

For me, it has nothing to do with aesthetics. Hell, I'm fat (but not wider than the aisle of a Boeing 757). If the plane had crash-landed and people had to get out, there was no way any of us were going to be able to wedge ourselves past that ass of biblical proportions.

Um, since when is a size 18 NOT considered plus-size? Doesn't that really start at like, 14? 16, tops? I worked at a dry cleaners when I was a lad and remember chuckling at Lane Bryant clothes marked S that were in reality about a size 24(at the time, since womens clothes sizes work on a sliding scale over the years, ie, todays 18 is yesteryears 24). So yeah. I wish I could have lived back in the days when stewardesses were all glamorous and one could smoke on a plane. Not that I'd smoke on a commercial flight now, were it allowed, cause that's just rude, but back then....a smoke, a martini, a hot stewardess...Good times.

...better than starting at size 4 like some "designers" think it does...

At the risk of my eyes....What does a size 18 look like? I'm a guy, your silly measurement system makes no sense to me. 28? (It sounds pretty freakin big)

brigid_fitch [TotalFark] 2009-07-11 03:52:49 PM
Apparently "plus-size" now starts at size 18

Plus size starts at 14W, which is like a 16 Misses.

Anyway, TFA says that other colors are available up to size 28--it's just the red dress that isn't. So this isn't even a matter of size 28 flight attendants not being able to work--it's that they can't get that one color.

Farking unions--this is one of many reasons why I hate them. Frivolous grievances.

/Was a member of 2 unions (NEA when I taught HS & CWA when I was a sales rep for Verizon Yellow Pages), neither voluntarily.
//Don't ask me why sales reps needed a union--I never could figure it out.

Size friggin 28!! Do commercial looms make cloth that wide? I'm a size 18 and loathe shopping for clothes because of my bad eating and general laziness. I cannot imagine what would make someone 5 sizes larger than me want to have a job that much out in the public eye. Thank you IT for telecommuting.

Came here to say the same thing. Took a flight last week, and the fat-assed stewardess smacked me with her hip lard every time she went by. Didn't even try to turn or say "excuse me" or anything.

Considering how narrow the aisles are on a plane, how could anyone wearing a size 28 possibly work in such cramped quarters? If she turned to face you, everyone on the opposite side of the aisle would be smashed up against the window by her gigantic posterior.

/Yeah, I said posterior.

If the news service couldn't find a pic of the new Delta uniforms, at least they could have used a stock photo of a sexy stewardess flight attendant.

Who is Delta kidding? Will this translate into anything useful? I fly quite a bit and have come to the conclusion that I will fly the airline that leaves the hell alone. No credit card presentations, no tarted up flight attendants, and for chrissake don't spam me about credit cards and miles. That's right... my current airline of choice is SWA.

I'm just gonna throw this out there...but, If you are pushing the upper 20's in clothing size, I'm pretty sure you are gonna have difficulty even fitting down those tiny ass airplane aisles, thus having difficulty performing your duties. Your type of dress should be the least of your worries. I encountered this problem in nursing school. We had a woman in my class that threw a fit because we picked a graduation uniform that didn't come in tent size. We ended up having to pick a whole new uniform just to accomadate her and the biatch didn't show up for graduation anyway!

vertiaset: Hey young people. There was a time when air travel was glamorous and exclusive. You ate from china, the Stewardesses were all pretty young women. Service was how the airlines competed with one another. Even in coach you had room to stretch out and relax. People dressed up to travel. Men wore suits, women nice dresses. You rarely saw children on flights and when you did they were well behaved and quiet. Poor people didn't fly, they road the bus.

/it was a golden age.

Did they let you take your onion through security?

I'm Female, 5'8" and 185 lbs - ~20 lbs over weight. I wear a 14 (when I have to wear women's over priced, poorly made clothing)
18 IS a plus size.
I can understand not wanting little twiggy girls as flight attendants in case they have to lift something bigger than a cup of ice, but a size 18 id too big for reasons people already mentioned here.

The sooner we start publicly shaming lardasses the better off we will be as a society. Unfortunately, here in the Chicago area, fit and trim people are the minority. A few weeks ago, I visited a Culver's restaurant in the suburbs (home of the butterburger) and I swear everyone in there was twice as big as me.

PersonaNonGrata 2009-07-11 04:02:22 PM
I never understood why stewardesses can't be hot. It's not like the ugly ones are especially effective. How come Hooters (and similar establishments) can get away with discriminating based on attractiveness, but not airlines? The average Hooters offers more competent food and beverage service with attractive girls that PRETEND TO BE NICE TO YOU.

In real life it's normally the attractive girls that are biatches and the fat ugly girls that are nicer because they have to be. So you go to Hooters where hot girls will flirt with you while they bring you fattening food, in some sort of fantasy world where you can have your cake and eat it.

The union spokeswoman said that being a flight attendant was about safety and not sexiness. But if that were the case, shouldn't the flight attendants be at physical fitness level of fire fighters?

How do they even get fat? Is the airplane food that irresistible?

Yup, And there are also WP sizes. In women's clothing you have three cuts. There's juniors which is for someone with and waist and hip that are similar in measurement. Typically these are cut in smaller sizes. Misses sizes are cut for someone with a smaller waist and larger hips, and women's for folks with a larger belly than hip.

Sort of like slim, regular, and husky in little boys' pants.

reillan 2009-07-11 04:04:10 PM
Wouldn't want a 0 either.

I always thought plus started at 16. Granted, the only women I've ever dated enough to go shopping for clothes with have been 2-8, so I don't really have a comparison...

Like I said before, the industry considers everything over a 10 an "extended size." And there's a difference between a misses 18 and an 18w.
