The NK Government may have computers, but the people are SOL. It's pretty damn isolated. Don't they have special TV sets that only pick up government signals?

As funny as the headline may be, I actually was at one point shown in Pyongyang a model north korean flat which had a brand new PC in it (and was told that the family were avid users) but the power plug did not match the NK wall sockets.

I'm pretty sure that our government employs some pretty good hackers. Why not have them take down NK's entire government's computer systems. I am pretty sure we could do that if we wanted.

Glass parking lots only happen when you nuke a bunch of camel jockeys, superheated sand turns into glass. When you nuke things around Japan you get giant monsters that like to smash Tokyo.

I am sure the CIA could do it, but right before the Second Persian Gulf War erupted my friend sent me a message, "Operation Hack Iraq is on." That was shortly followed by, "Operation Hack Iraq is off." He was a civilian computer programmer with lots of government contracts. When I asked him what he was talking about he did not answer. Then the war broke out and I figured it out. I did not ask again as he clearly should not have told me that. Also I seriously doubt it was called, "Operation Hack Iraq." Just it rhymes and he was excited and very possibly drunk.

So my point is the federal government would outsource it to civilian contractors that have security clearance.

When I lived in Communist Russia, there were only two channels on TV. One was blatantly fantastical state propaganda, the other channel was a stern and disapproving KGB official behind a desk, who would suggest you changed the channel, about once every 3 or so minutes. I remember in those days, walking into a store in Moscow and despite seeing empty shelves, asking if they had any bacon. "No comrade. You want across the road. This is a bakery. We don't have any bread". A friend of mines uncle had a near death experience (in every sense of the way), one night he was lying awake worrying about his heart troubles and his inability to get medicines, when he hears the door of his house being kicked in, and loud feet stomping towards his bedroom door which also gets kicked in, he hides behinds his sheets and says "Who's that?" and the answer comes back "IT IS I, THE ANTHROPOMORPHIC PERSONIFICATION OF DEATH, YOUR MORTALITY MADE FLESH" and my friends Uncle relaxed immediately (which probably saved him) "Thank the Saints.." says he, "I thought you were the KGB.".

Please, work harder against the corrupt bourgeoisie kulak along side your waitress. One day we will all have veal.

Those 'attacks' were childish. Carried out by kim-bot script kiddies. Nothing really very clever at all.

I could do better, by myself, on the whole nation of North Korea. If they had anything worth a shait to attack.

I don't know if you noticed, but I spoke of my friend in the past tense and mentioned that he was very likely drunk when he sent the messages. He died of liver failure this spring. A drunk or not, he did know how to hack.

Oznog 2009-07-11 04:50:08 PM
But DOS attacks typically involve hacking other machines ahead of time, then issuing orders to send absurd levels of traffic to particular servers.

The "source" could still be established by tracing the original hacks and the commands to activate.

That would not require a great deal of bandwidth. It would, however, require cutting-edge expertise, which NK simply shouldn't logically have since it has no computer-using community. You can't simply order just anyone to become a good hacker, even if he's starving or you beat him.

When seeing SK sites had been attacked, implicating NK, I assumed they'd outsourced this job to Russia. Lots of hacking originates in Russia. There are certainly Russians who will do this for hire, however, what money does NK have to pay them with??

crab66: 20 bucks says it's just convenient cover for the Chinese.

The Chinese have nothing to gain by crippling America; who would buy their cheap lead-tainted products?

There's one bright spot on that night map of N. Korea, about the middle of the peninsula. That must be where Kim keeps his cadre of bicycle-peddling slaves to generate power for his ENIAC computer. That would explain how they could HACK the US websites, but not actually achieve anything.

Maybe Starcraft's popularity in South Korea is part of some sinister "Ender's Game" program, where the best Starcraft player gets to command the South Korean military?

Judging from the fortifications along the DMZ, they must be pretty assured that bunkers backed by siege tanks can break a virtually endless 'ling rush.

Well, my assumption from the original korean war was that the PRC and the NK used zergling like mass attacks... personally I would prefer the game to be played with prism towers and Black Eagles, but, we're talking starcraft. Hopefully the South Koreans have some templar on hand...
