So is this the thread where we talk about Bruno? I LOVED it. Saw it in a theatre that was, judging by hair and shirt style, at least 50% gay guys, and audience reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

My only quibbles are, they frontloaded the funniest parts of the movie at the beginning; and the swingers were just way, way too awkward. I was a little worried at how much the laughs would be from homophobic stereotypes, but the cage wrestling scene was great meta-commentary on that. By the end, with the ex-gay ministries, the swingers, the hunters and the cage wrestling audience, the movie was a pretty strong statement against homophobia. And holy shiat was it ever funny.

It didn't even occur to me, but given all the frat boys and popped collars I would have to agree on the sexual composition of the audience.

Ha! I'm trying to think what the most killer quotes are from Bruno now. Probably the line about OJ being a real "dick magnet", and "a bear ate all my clothes, and all I have left is this box of condoms".

I loved it. Felt a little sorry for Ron Paul though. Poor guy.

I couldn't believe people brought their young teenage children there, and then had the audacity to complain that it wasn't appropriate for a younger audience. WELL DUH! They had theater staff checking for tickets at every turn. Obviously this isn't your run of the mill family comedy.

/Loved all the male frontal, especially in the focus group scene. XD

What, do you work for the production company or something? Were you hired to post comments in forums as part of a viral marketing campaign? Or maybe you are just being sarcastic and I missed it.

That movie was terrible! The jokes were all extremely cheap, obvious and predictable. There were a few laughs scattered throughout it, but for the most part, Bruno is his weakest character and most of the movie was just him acting like a jerk (in ways unrelated to the character).

I haven't seen it yet, but given the extremeness of your views, why should we trust you any more than the previous poster? It's just as likely that you're untrustworthy as he.

So, given that, what was the value in your posting, other than to voice your impotent rage at a movie you paid $10 to see?

duncangonuts 2009-07-11 10:07:42 AM
And yes, they did cut the scene they are talking about in TFA.

Movie was pretty hilarious though. Not as good or revealing as Borat, in fact it's pretty much the exact same movie with different stunts (if I may call them that), but still pretty funny.

PeppaJack [TotalFark] 2009-07-11 10:12:09 AM
Saw Bruno last night, was entertained but I thought Borat was a better character. The difference being that Borat was naive and backwards in a way that was sort of endearing. Bruno is just a self centered asshole. Sad commentary though on the people trying to get their babies modeling work.

Was that woman that had the belt at the swingers club a man? I couldn't tell.

zinny 2009-07-11 10:17:41 AM
Borat had its moments, but as a friend described it to me "painful to watch". I had to agree. I'll still see Bruno though. I'm into ridiculous comedy.

The1andonlyZack 2009-07-11 10:33:26 AM
Bruno was definitly way over the top. It was funny no doubt...but not as funny as Borat is.

Just as long as i can stop seeing ads for SBC. And having to turn over magazines on the principle of not wanting to see his naked man-ass on the cover. I agree with whoever said it in a previous thread: Liked him in Sweeney Todd, liked him better with his throat cut.

NeuroticRocker [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-07-11 10:54:21 AM
I haven't seen it yet but on looks AND persona, I prefered the original Bruno...the one with the mohawk...from Da Ali G Show.

I'm on the bus on my phone so I can't GIS the image for you but you'll see.

he was less "A-HEEeee-eyyy" and less of a flamboyant dude. the original was just a fashion reporter who showed the shallow and pedantic nature of the fashion industry. that's right. shallow and pedantic

NeuroticRocker: the original was just a fashion reporter who showed the shallow and pedantic nature of the fashion industry. that's right. shallow and pedantic

Actually, despite what it may seem via the ads, a lot of the movie is making fun of celebrity rather than homophobia (the whole plot is him trying to become famous) so you still get some of that.

I thought it was funny when SBC was on Conan as Bruno and my husband thought it was for real. Especially since we had watched Da Ali G Show on dvd before. If only he could have met up with him during filming... I'd never let him live it down. (Fortunately he's not a homophobe so it wouldn't be too embarrassing.)

BaronVonAsshat 2009-07-11 12:13:13 PM
I think the saddest part about this (and likely the statement that SBC is trying to make) is that this country is full of rubes, fools, backward people, and opportunists. The fact that he could make a whole movie that shows this not once, but TWICE, is testament to that fact.

PROTIP: A person is harder to bait if they're not a closed-minded cheap fame-seeker.

Never mention anything too positive about yourself on Fark. Especially concerning looks or dick size. You will feel wrath. Remember to emphasis the weird or negative. For example I am bald and have been accused of having the posture of a preying mantis. Also I have been known to eat spoonfuls of instant coffee. On purpose.

I enjoyed it, but it was way too staged for my liking.

The guy in the hotel who was "freaking out?" Wouldn't he think something was up when a camera crew starts following him down the hallway on his way to Bruno's room? He never once looks into the camera or the four to five guys standing there filming him why they can't hand over the keys? A Hollywood agent who has apparently never heard of Sacha Baron Cohen? Paula Abdul has never heard of or seen Sacha Baron Cohen?

The biggest laugh though was that minister listing all the reasons Bruno probably hates women. "I understand that sometimes they just keep talking and talking, and never get to the point."

Let's break it down. There are things worth bragging about but that's certainly not one of them. Any sane individual should realize no one on earth cares how often an annoymous person goes to the gym. And the fact that he decided to tell us that tidbit in a very brief bio indicates that it's an accomplishment he's most of proud of. So we have a serious red flag that he A)Is superficial, and B)Probably doesn't have anything interesting to say.

And that's why the movie was called Bruno, and not Sacha Baron Cohen. He played his character, they had no idea who this character was, and he baited them perfectly.

Best part of the movie:
Bruno: "And now time for our interview with Harrison Ford!"
Harrison Ford: "fark OFF!"
Dick: "BRUNO!"

If you mean, am I gay? No. NTTAWTT, though.
What I meant was he's about as funny as a funeral march, and should not be allowed to be seen in public.

But that's just me.

Paduke 2009-07-11 05:25:06 PM
I watched it in my small southern town and some people were really pissed and didn't seem to really be prepared for it. No one in the theater was over 30, and a bunch of the high school kids there had probably never seen Da Ali G show.

I spotted two particular groups that left the movie early and one dude yelled "This movie is gay!" at the top of his lungs as he left. Apparently he was prepared for that level of gayness.

I thought it was about as good as Borat. The UFC match and focus group were brilliant. Felt bad for Ron Paul and Paula Abdul.

On another note, wheelchairs are super fun when they are not a necessity.

This movie was great. I live in Alabama, about 20 min from where they filmed the scenes in Cullman county and the homophobia is right on track. That is how almost everyone around here acts towards gays, just way too much hatred.

Bruno tried much harder than Borat for fewer laughs. And the fact that SBC is not gay took away from the shock value of this outrageous gay character - you knew he was only going to take it so far.

It still had some genuinely good laughs, but if you're on the fence, Netflix is your friend.

umm. you do realize he's not really from Kazistan, also? Did that detratct the humor for you?
Making out with dudes is about the 50th funniest thing he could do by being an openly gay character, so i don't really see that as an obstacle to the film being funny.
