Is that photo real? I can't tell by the pixels, and I've haven't seen that many photoshops in my life.

Anyway, if that is real I am impressed that Rosie has taken on a second life in a hijab. Nice.

I think it's from a protest in Paris.

definitely, it's amazing to see the different ways women have used Rosie to further the feminist cause.

/no, I don't think headscarves are inherently anti-feminist.

Hey all,

Seeing how there is an Iran thread, has anyone heard anything from our twitter people?

There was a article a while ago that said PK was arrested. Do we know any more information about him/her?

Thanks

Genta: Lumi: Eh, no different from us chastising China or North Korea for human rights abuses like torture or holding people years without trial.

water boarding was not torture to the bush administration, it didnt cause permanent or even temporary physical damage. it was purely emotional and mental stress. if you accept that physical harm only is torture then waterboarding is not torture. this is a rational and justifiable stance.

holding people for years without trial... something obama is doing. why? because if you took a minute to look at WHO was being detained you would understand. as one example, a group of people left western china, leaving behind their wives and children. the left for jobs or whatever trying to get to somewhere... they got stuck in afghanistan without money to go further, and were doing odd jobs trying to get it together. the afghan natives knew they were outsiders and turned them in to the US claiming they were terrorists. the afghan natives got the bounty reward and the US picked up some terrorists and send them to Guantanamo bay. however the US figured out they were pawns after a while and then decided to send them back. china heard about it and declared them rebels for leaving their home region or whatever else. so they cant go back to china. other nations wont take them cause it will piss off china.... albania took a few, and then suddenly refused to take any more... nobody in the US wants suspected terrorists.... so... where do they go? no nation will accept them. you see the problem? they arent exactly being detained so much as they'd be arrested/killed if they were set free where china could get their hands on them.

but yes, lets vote obama for change.... he'll close guantanamo, move the people elsewhere and business as usual.

How is Obama holkd people for "years" without trial, when he's been in office for 6 months? Oh, that's right... it was the Bushies who held them for years, Obama is the guy trying to get that whole mess cleared up.

Yeah...

well, regardless of the messenger, the Italian police aren't known for being nice to protesters, immigrants (legal or otherwise), or football fans. not so sure about how mafia fares there though.

No, apparently twitter is not a proper way to fight a revolutionary war. It seems everyone learned that guns are still the best way to fight an oppressive government. But it sure was fun pretending!

You are wrong. Information is what wins a revolution. That's why Twitter could have made the difference.

Of course, the best information is where to take your own guns to shoot the oppressive bastards.

It seems to me that the regime lost. They cannot be considered legitimate by their people or the international community. While business will continue as usual, they ideological battle is over. What this will mean in practice is hard to say. I don't expect much.

Herman Borrach 2009-07-11 05:26:04 AM
To finish the thought:

I think you have to avoid a bloodbath when possible. Try diplomacy, attempt to fix the system from within. An armed conflict would have cost many lives. It is tragic that it took even a handful.

There are times when it is worth making the sacrifice. Was this it? Is there no opportunity for peace, negotiation and reconciliation?

Not really for me to say.

He would have gotten his head caved in by the Basij.
That non-violent protest stuff only works when the "oppressive government" is vastly outnumbered and cares how they are perceived by the rest of the world.
If the Iranian protesters had just held hands and sang "We Shall Overcome" it would have just made for a higher body-count.
