Yes, it's ok. Toys are meant to be opened up and enjoyed. Keeping them Mint in Box is stupid.

You should have seen everyone gasp in horror when I was at a sci-fi convention, bought a fairly rare action figure, and immediately ripped open the blister pack.

Trick question. She doesn't have one. That's why Ken took off with Colonel Flamin' ( a lesser known member of G I Joe). They sell used books in San Fran.

I used to work in a shop selling old Barbie dolls to collectors. I had to learn more about Barbie than any straight man ever should.

They spent a *phenomenal* amount of money on them. Thousands. In one day. In that store we had collectors of all sorts, but none of them could even begin to compare.

Well, sure, because it's not every day people get to watch somebody destroy a valuable collectible object. Just because you have no impulse control doesn't mean it's "just a toy".

Looking at Gorgor links is like being a substance abuser; no matter how long you stay clean, given enough time you're going to relapse.

Some of Eagan's collection, with boxes wrapped in cellophane to protect the original cellophane. (Kate Kilpatrick -- The Washington Post)

SpiderQueenDemon 2009-07-10 08:28:10 PM
I was once something of a doll collector. Porcelain. Handmade. Antique. Barbie. I had some of everything. It helped that my grandmother had only had sons (I was the second girl in my generation on one side, fourth on the other,) and that my aunt liked to spoil me. I even did some mother's-helper babysitting to earn money for a few choice pieces.

And then I turned 16.

/still have 'em though, for my own daughters perhaps
//collection was valued and insured to about four figures in the 90s -now around six
///many NIB, some not, depending on the piece.

myzdoxae 2009-07-10 08:29:25 PM
If you are a "true collector," then I imagine you'd just keep it in the box. Most likely for resale value later.
If you love Barbie, I'd think you open up the box and play with it!
What good is a toy still in the farkin' box?
At Christmas time as a kid, did you get a toy and just sit and stare at the box?! Maybe if you were retarded...

/As for buying one and opening one, I did that for a while when all the comic books came in "Collector's bags" with limited edition cards and crap. Like the Superman Dies issue with the black poly-bag and bloody-red Superman logo.
//Man am I glad they stopped those gimmicks.

I was a collector. I still have some new in box somewhere but alas I too outgrew spending 60 -100 bucks on a doll.

my mom collects these creepy ugly "real babies" from franklyn mint or some nonsence. she has well over 100 all in boxes. I told her if they ever have a fire they are going to be horrified by the gruesome baby cemetary they find.

Collectors are basically addicts but they don't burden the rest of us like substance addicts do. I don't understand some of them, like my old neighbor who collects unopened boxes of sports cards, but I'll put up with their quirks if they'll put up with mine.

Foolish person. It IS a toy, therefore why would I choose to display a piece of cardboard?

And I ripped it open just to piss off losers like you :D

My grandma has some barbies that are decades old, from like when she was a kid or her daughter (my aunt) was little, I don't remember. I used to play with them when I was a kid, but then I grew out of them.

I wasn't much of a barbie kid when I was little. I had a handful that I played with when I was younger, and then by the time I think I hit maybe 10 or 11 I was done with them.

In mid-June I attended Anime Evolution in Vancouver and bought an Aeris doll from FFVII: Crisis Core, and I haven't opened it yet. I'd love to have it out of the box, but I'm not sure if it's rare enough to qualify as a collector's item. I've seen the dolls (and the 2 or 3 others from the Crisis Core line) at the convention and other stores, so maybe they're not that rare? If it is rare, or not that common, I'll probably keep it in the box.
