Sorry but the law of the streets dictate that a dead homeless person must be picked clean by their brethren before their body can be disposed of. She was only honoring their creed.

Anyone old enough to take a life is old enough to consent. She no longer has jail time attached to her nether region. Get in line.

All kidding aside, people who have killed other people do actually need to understand that's not acceptable behavior. If I remember the original article right, it was dark and she was driving down a poorly lit area when the homeless woman crossed in front of her. She was not in a crosswalk or even a streetlight.

The girl should have stopped or should have turned herself in long before that, but I can understand.

her family didn't care enough to make her not homeless so I am guessing they might issue a collective "meh".

Anyway, TFA says she could face 30 years in prison but it is likely she'll plea bargain down and serve no time. No mention that she was drunk or anything so her only real crime is leaving the scene of an accident... should she get Old Sparky for that?

Sure, why not? She "accidentally" killed someone with her vehicle and then figured it would be cool to just drive away, no problems right?

This is the kind of person we want to see back on the streets...am I right or what?

Good lord, are you seriously implying that she killed the homeless woman intentionally? Because you owe us all a big CITATION on that one. Nowhere in TFA does it say this was intentional. And yeah, she drove away, but what would you do if you were 17 and hit someone? Freak out, that's what. She didn't have the presence of mind at the time to do what those of us who are older than 17 would have done at the time. Which is exactly why she turned herself in later when she calmed down.

Driving carelessly is intentional, yes. You can't drive like a farking idiot unless you let your foot slam the peddle, your eyes wander while you change the iPod, txt your bff Jill. Sure it was an "accident" in the sense that she obviously didn't want to kill someone but clearly her actions, while driving, resulted in the death of an innocent person.
She's guilty of being a moran. Who's moranic actions led to the death of another human being. I never said she did it intentionally - if that was the case I'd just be making jokes about it.

ANECDOTE: driving in Nova Scotia in the summer of 2006 with a friend. He was not paying attention and he made a right hand turn at the bottom of a hill only to have a biker slam into the side of his car, flip over the roof, land and break his leg. That is what people who aren't total farking idiots do.

sabyJeBus: anyone flipping out about this is an idiot...she got booked in 20 minutes, that doesn't mean she got acquitted, that means they processed her bullshiat paperwork in 20 minutes. if you even browsed the article youd see that she faces up to 30 years because she is being charged as an adult. which sucks cuz if someone over 18 slept with her that would be different, she'd be considered an infant.

And the rest of the article explains that she'll probably never see a day of prison because of the plea bargain her lawyer's working out with prosecutors. Even her ticket was tossed out.

Remember, kids, just run down the homeless - they're cheap, easy, nobody cares about them, and you'll get off with probation.

yeah, I think the fact that she's been arrested and will get some sort of punishment will let everyone know that killing someone isn't acceptable in case they missed that memo. The relative wealth of the parties really has nothing to do with what happened. It was an accident. Sure it's possible that the police didnt try too hard to close the case because of who the victim was but that has nothing to do with this girl's actions.

The first couple of times you do tend to feel a tinge of remorse and believe that you should be punished. I know that I used to force myself to watch Angela's Ashes.

After awhile you realize that they deserved what they got and you were actually doing society a favor. I'm sure that varies from person to person - for me it was right around a dozen - but reaching this state certainly makes you more efficient the next time around. There also tends to be less time in between events.

Didn't mommy and daddy ever teach you to LOOK BOTH FARKING WAYS BEFORE YOU CROSS THE STREET. Bums, get out of the road. You are not a car, you can't even drive.

Cars don't come out of nowhere and they aren't exactly a small bag of peanuts.

In addition, I hate self-righteous pedestrians that get some kind of satisfaction from making you wait for them whilst taking their time. The kind of person that doesn't even look before crossing as they expect you to stop for them. "Look both ways? ME? I have the right of way!" No, pal, this 3000 pounds of fiberglass and steel begs to differ.

The only place you get mercy from me is the crosswalk, and you better make it quick. Don't got time for your games.

When did I ever say it was the right thing to do? Go back through my post and show me where I wrote that. Because I didn't. I never said it was "right," it was wrong, but understandable. In a perfect world, she would have stopped and called 911 and waited for the cops to arrive. But she didn't. She freaked out in the heat of the moment, and kept driving, probably before she had time to realize what had happened. To me, I can understand not stopping immediately. It's wrong, and I hope to god that if I'm ever in that sort of situation I have the presence of mind to stop, but the situation is stressful and unexpected enough that I can understand her actions.

Where she farked up, and what I hadn't realized before, was that it took her three whole months to turn herself in. Even if she drove off in the heat of the moment, she should have gone to the police the next morning at the latest after she'd calmed down. Three months isn't cool.

In the United States, admitting anything is a good way to lose your income and your family's income for the rest of your life to some lawyers and "victim". So we don't do that down here. What your friend did would be incredibly stupid (aside from mis-managing his car).

Also, that road is one way, and has cars parked along it at all hours of the day, and the speed limit is fairly high.

How goddamn hard is it to look ONE WAY to look for cars who have their lights on in the dark? Or perhaps not jay walk? That was probably a suicide or someone stoned/drunk out of their mind.

Also, in some neighborhoods in the U.S., the smart thing is to drive away and tell the cops later so you don't get dragged out of your car and beaten to death for being a whitey. So driving away is barely a crime in some circumstances now.

That said, she avoided the issue for three months, which is just stupid. But still, that's just a stupid kid, not a hardened criminal. If you don't believe every single traffic violation and crime should be dealt with by a bullet in the head on the spot, then this case should be at the far far end of the "light sentencing" side. Sheesh, some of you folk really don't have any damn perspective outside a WoW clan do you?
