Wait, what?

I SAID, THE COOLEST ORIGAMI CITY YOU WILL SEE UNTIL THE ARTIST BURNS IT DOWN.

If I were in his position I would also burn down the representation of being a loser studying for an entrance exam.

cheesyfarker: Blow it up with firecrackers.

I agree, imagine what 1000 well placed black cats would do to that.. or just half that of M80's. Very cool structure though.

That pretty cool, but I'm pretty sure it's a paper model rather than origami.

Burn baby burn.

While I would like to see it burn the dude is seriously stupid. Some one with even less brains and more money would pay him big time to own that thing. Than being said let it DIAF.

lovely

montroll 2009-07-10 09:11:20 AM
I remember seeing a similar (but by a different artist) paper model of New York something like 25 years ago at the Whitney. It was so cool to me that I kept going back to the Whitney just on the off chance they would have that again. Sadly, they never did and it scarred me for life. True story! Except, maybe, the scarring. Maybe.

And yes, this is not origami.

Tokyo.

Did the same thing as a kid with model cars. Just pour gas on them and light them in the driveway.

gocheesego 2009-07-10 09:19:30 AM
Sparkeyjames: By burning it he'll get a crapload more publicity than having just put it on a table somewhere for people to look at. In Japan, it is possible to get full time work out of this sort of activity so by publicising his work in this way, he'll likely land a job that will be better than anything art school could have got him.

Bermuda59 2009-07-10 10:13:07 AM
Maybe he came make some paper bombers and recreate WW II.

yeah stupid indeed, why would anyone build something like this:
imgs.sfgate.com

only to burn it down a week later:
imgs.sfgate.com

and certain these guys are morons for spending week creating this out of sand:

only to take a broom to it the minute they are done:

or maybe, just maybe, they are artists making a statement about impermanence and living in the moment

Just because someone doesn't think only in terms of financial gain doesn't mean they're stupid. Personally, I think his vision of seeing the city form from ashes and flames is pretty neat. I never would have thought of it myself, but then again, I'm not an artist.

Scutter: Wait, you can use glue and a knife in origami now? Why didn't I get the memo?

That's not origami or kirigami, and it's not even really monkiri. I would call it construction using cardstock as the medium.

Still fascinating, though.

Klitch [TotalFark] 2009-07-10 01:15:23 PM
Wataru, who lives in Tokyo but is originally from Saitama, Japan, started working on the castle while he was studying to become an art student.

When you're studying for something aren't you already a student?

It's beautiful work, but I, for one, can't wait to see that farker burn.

simpsonfan 2009-07-10 08:35:49 PM
I could never burn my art. If I got sued for some reason, and was forced to sell them to pay, then I sure as hell would burn them, that would be the only way.

FTA:

Origami city: model crafted entirely from paper

...has been crafted using only paper...

...comes complete with electrical lights and a moving train.

One of these things is not like the others.

destrip 2009-07-11 02:59:57 PM
He'd probably get more publicity if he were able to transport it to BM and torch it on the night of the Burn.

Then again, a model city burning would probably pale in comparison to a 50-foot-tall man and buckets of fireworks...
