(NYPost) Strange They should have known that you can't just walk down the streets of Manhattan dressed as Superman and Batman in this post-9/11 world. With great craziness comes great responsibility   (nypost.com) divider line 84

Yeah, NYC is going to hell. Used to be you could wear whatever you want and be roundly and determinedly ignored.

Too much tourist mentality is what it is. Looking at stuff past 12" from your nose is not what made NYC great. Being aware of your farking fellowman when he is not in serious ass trouble is going to kill the soul of this town.

"To protect and to serve."

"Land of the free and the home of the brave."

Those thoughts just popped into my head.

I don't know why.

NYC used to be cool.

Guiliani ruined NYC. He made it all Disney and kid friendly. NYC used to be one of the few cities more or less designed for adults.

It was going down when he was mayor and then 9/11 gave them the excuse to ruin the rest. Smoking bans.

A NYC Rock club with no smoking ????????WTF is that. Great thanks now I can smell the piss perfectly.

Spiderman and Batman once bought tacos in front of me at the Taco Bell in New Rochelle, NY. It was sort of surreal as it occured in the middle of the day. The place was empty and none of the employees or I even looked at them or said a word about it. No idea what that was about. Their outfits were excellent though and not cheapo Holloween costumes.

Dressing up as Superman is fine.

Punching a cop is not fine.

Punching a woman cop with men cops around is double not fine.

I did RTFA.

"When they said no, cops asked for IDs. Again, they answered no, which prompted cops to handcuff Batman."

So you can be cuffed for not presenting ID? I understand Superman getting arrested after throwing punches, but if I refuse to provide ID then I'm facedown on the pavement, cuffed?

But a crowd of police took him down and brought him to a special Fortress of Solitude -- the Midtown South station house.

Meanwhile, Batman left with another costumed character, said Melba Williams, a tourist from Tennessee.

"He walked off with the Statue of Liberty."

best part of the article, for sure.

I think the funniest part of this story is the image of Superman running down the street screaming "I'm not going to get arrested!"

Just thinking about it is cracking me up...

/I'da been all "Just fly away, Kal! They can't touch you!"

Bolo Jungle: Not defending the cops on this one, HOWEVER, from TFA, they were trying to find out if the two were street performers - which DOES require a permit - when Superman freaked out. They let Batman go, and probably would have let Superman go, too if he hadn't eaten some bad kryptonite.

And if Batman wasn't white, they would have taken him in to do a criminal check before letting him go.

The_EliteOne 2009-07-10 11:31:21 AM
I knew I should have taken a picture with Superman when I saw him walking down Broadway at around 3. With all that long hippy hair and a soft face though, I thought he was a girl from far away.

Good costume though, I don't think the cops should have bothered him, when I saw him he was just walking and talking to people, not "performing" which I guess is subject to opinion.

Also had a presentation at my job by the ACLU who said it is not illegal to not have ID on you if you are a US Citizen, police can ask you questions but only detain you if they have reasonable suspicion that you did/have something illegal or about to do so....but yeah punching the officer in the face, if true, was not cool.

obidon 2009-07-10 11:39:10 AM
Once again, cops showing their true, ignorant colors. I'd be willing to bet the superman idiot did nothing more than talk back to the officer which apparently is grounds for a beating these days.

Since the time Guiliani was Mayor, yes they can take you in for not having ID. Granted it's up to the officer whether or not they decide to take them in to the precinct to do a criminal check, take a guess which citizen's are more likely to be taken in.

I read that police being able to require an ID was a USA thing not a NYC thing. There was a supreme court decision a few years back which set the precedent. I think the initial case actually came out of Nevada. I don't remember the specifics and am too drunk to look it up, but perhaps someone here knows what I'm talking about?

That said, NYC is no fun anymore. Requiring a license for a bum to be a creative bum is retarded. All the whiners saying "but people will block the street, I can't get to my coffee fast enough" can go move to Delaware, they have plenty of offices there.
