So it's 75% carbs? That's a terrible diet for people.

This has been known to be true in many species. I had a rat who lived past 3 years of age (truly a landmark age for a rat!) because (I am convinced) I occasionally forgot to feed her for a day at a time. So she would go without food (never for longer than a day and a half) once every fortnight or so. She lived a very long time, and was a happy, healthy animal, and very sweet-natured to boot. Ended up dying peacefully in her sleep at around 3yrs + 3 months.

Nah, it's a self balancing thing. When I lost weight I stopped craving the bad stuff as much because I was more in love with myself than the food.

Caloric restriction is well known to increase longevity. What the don't tell you is that the rats become mean and stop having sex. If that's how you want to live your life, go ahead, have an extra 20 years of miserable existence.

People are working on this. resveratrol and rapamycin are known to increase lifespan, along with IGF1 mutants. Works in worms, flies, monkeys, and presumably humans.

Also a "high fat" diet for mice is considered >8%. Those mice die sooner than mice on a 4% fat diet. We need to find the mechanisms to mimic caloric restriction and stem cell properties. Look at telomerase, stem cell markers like Oct 4, Igf1, and sirtuin activators like resveratrol. DNA methylation probably plays a role in controlling senescence as well.

Years ago I worked at a lab that did primarily animal testing. One of the ongoing studies there involved life span / diet.

There was something like 8 groups of rats.

Group 1 was given all the food they could eat. How much they ate was averaged out and each of the following groups got a declining percentage of that amount.

Eventually the entire group 1 died off and it took a year or two for the rest to die off completely. They did live a long ass time as far as rats go, but they were some scraggly bastards.

I think that while the experiment had some interesting results, it's got a fatal flaw. These rats had a very sedate life style. Locked up in a small cage about the size of a shoebox for their entire lives with nothing to do and nobody to socialize with.

it's not really that old news. this is possibly the longest CR study completed to date, having gone on for 20 years now. just because a CR diet improved longevity of mice and rats (that have a normal lifespan of 1-2 years) didn't mean that it would improve the lifespan of other mammals with longer base lifespans.

i've seen some pictures from this study. just the difference in appearance from a 7 year old monkey on a normal diet and a 7 year old monkey on a CR diet was damn impressive. the 7 year old CR monkey's appearance was most similar to 3 year old monkey from the control group.

/most humans don't like to think "long-term"
//eat away fatties

I assume you know that the longevity increase comes from not just "eating right" but mild starvation. Feel free to be smug about being fit, running 10k a day, and being at the gym in 26 minutes, but that won't increase your life span. You won't have the energy for those things as you're always in a near caloric deficit.

/Tried the near starvation thing.
//Lost a lot of weight but felt like crap for a year. No energy.
///Not worth it.
////Fat bastard again.

You do crave less, but it's not only about liking yourself more--you lose the craving for carbs. When I was fat, the 10% of my life that involved eating was great, and the other 90% sucked. Now, the 10% eating part sucks, and the othr 90% is much better--less aches and pains, easier to get around, more stamina, etc.

Monkeys in both groups consumed very healthful diets. "We are studying calorie restriction, not malnutrition," stresses Colman, who does not follow this type of diet herself.
