meer markt: I used to enjoy caturday threads. I tend to read a post before the farker's handle on these types of message boards.

And then one caturday, I read the handles of the farkers posting, for I had figured it was a number of different people.

And there are plenty of posters in a caturday thread, but there is a core of disturbingly frantic participants. Not gonna lie, today it got a little creepy and awkward as I just kept reading

Posting this for my mom and dad:

i445.photobucket.com

Hemingway came into our lives almost three years ago to the day. We'd seen this strapping big guy roaming the alley and the neighborhood for about a year before that, often keeping company with a sociable little female we called Muriel. She showed him that we were a reliable source of food. For a long time, we thought he must surely have a regular home because he was so friendly and eager to get to know us. But there are lots of apartments nearby and it's not unusual for cats to be dumped when their owners move out.

One day Bob was talking to Hemingway on the porch, when Hemingway spotted some birds in the yard, sneaked around behind a tree and pounced, slapped one bird straight out of the air, gave it a quick coup de gras, and dropped it into his food dish. "You see? This is what I've been forced to do for food!" Those big polydactyl paws helped. It wasn't long after that that he showed up for dinner with some bloody nicks in his head, and they didn't get treated. I was afraid that someone had shot him with a pellet gun, and obviously he was homeless.

We packed him off to the vet, where we learned that his injuries weren't serious, and that he must have been somebody's pet at one time, because he'd been neutered, but sadly, he was FIV+, probably from his year on the street. We couldn't bear to put him down, so we brought him home, making a safe area for him to keep him away from our other cats. When we let him out of the carrier, he was clearly overwhelmed with gratitude that he was still indoors. A home again!

He was so glad to be in the house that for the next six months he never looked out the windows. He was very gentle and his manners were perfect, and it took many more months before he was assured that it was all right to get up on the furniture. He was a great companion for watching television, reading, or working at the computer. His two joys in life were his laser-pointer toy and his brush. Can cats smile? Hemingway did when he started his diesel purr while being brushed. We'll miss that and we'll miss his company. RIP.

Now looky here Mr. Meer Markt:
This Caturday thread is a community which has come together in Cyberspace to support one another and foster a love of all things CAT. It is a refreshing change from the misogynists, fruit bats and wing nuts that typically dominate the other FARK threads. Anybody read the political thread lately? You'll see the same three or four names 'obsessively' posting.

I am a long-time lurker on Caturday because I do not have the time or the inclination to post pictures of our family's six cats, although ALL of the people whom you have accused of 'dominating' this thread have posted VERY simple directions to help newbies add their own pictures. Plus, our cats run and hide when the camera comes out--go figure.

Caturday is one of the few things I do for the sheer enjoyment--I look forward to it every week; it helps me relax after the working week is over, and I feel like a member of a community!

Caturday regulars: THANK YOU for Caturday. Our entire family enjoys it.

I'm trying to convince my boyfriend that we should get a second cat. My first cat loves me to pieces, and my boyfriend is a little jealous (seriously!) of the love I get from my Finnegan. There's a kitty I have my eye on, and I think Finnegan would enjoy having a buddy to play with since the bf and I are at work all day. Plus, I keep telling my boyfriend since he's home more than I am the kitten would probably adopt him as his person!

A few pictures of Finnegan as a kitten visiting the parent's house:

leftteffticle: caturday, i need some advice.

regulars here may remember i have been posting a personal ad of sorts for my friends kitty to try and find her a new home. as he has already left for the east coast, she is staying alone in his apartment and i am cat sitting her. also, the duties of finding something to do with her have fallen to me. she's an 11 year old cat, which is the first strike against her. shes in good health, but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years. and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed). and then i discovered several wet spots on the carpet yesterday, which i had never seen before but the apartment smells so ungodly bad it's really hard to tell if its old or new smells. i knew she had issues with peeing on his girlfriends stuff (hence why the cat is being abandoned) but didnt realize until very recently that it seems to be worse than that.

ive asked around friends, strangers, here, craigslist...found nothing. the 3 cat rescues that contacted me back told me they would not take her because she cannot be rehomed. i have hopes that another local cat rescue may take her, but i have not been able to get ahold of anyone through it. if i take her to the humane society, she'll be put down.

what should i do? it makes me ill to think about having to put this sweet kitty down because her person didnt want her anymore and she's older and a little difficult. i only have until august 14th to figure this out. thoughts, advice, anyone?

I'm sure the fact she has been left behind all by herself has not helped with her inappropriate peeing. She could be spite peeing, or maybe she is trying to tell someone she has something wrong with her urinary tract. See if you can get a vet to check her out for cheap.

Also, this is a stretch, but maybe a retirement home or something that might want to take an older cat as their community cat? I know you feel frustrated trying to think of some solution to this, but I want to encourage you - don't give up, be creative, and have hope.

I have been around cats all my life , only a few years ago did I realise cats eat squirrels I got quit the squirrel hunter here, but I havent found half squirel parts in a good while. I have watched him stalk them.

I always knew they *wanted* to eat them, but not that they could actually, ya know, GET them to eat them. LOL I was amazed! And squirrel parts? Ew. A little large on the carcass continuum for me in terms of what I'd like to find on my porch.

I think the worst/funniest thing my own cat Angel (see my profile) ever did was bring a mole into the house and entertain herself while I was asleep. I woke up to this rhythmic thumping noise and could not figure out what it was. I turned on the light, and there was Angel, throwing this dead mole up into the air with her mouth, over and over again, then batting it in midair and chasing the body as it soared. Both horrifying and ROFLcopter all at the same time. ;)

thank you everyone for advice. so far all the no kill shelters in the area have rejected her. i want to get her taken care of, vet wise, but i do not have the money right now...and well, shes not my cat though i love her and would contribute money to her happiness. but i already had to spend $200 on my own cats recently and i just...i cant spent another few hundred to get her checked out. i have to move soon and...i just cant. and her owner is unemployed so he can contribute no money. he took her for a checkup but couldnt afford the tests. i contacted the vet school at uw madison and they actually charge more than my current vet. im just...im worried cause ive tried to find her a home and everyone who has generously offered support has just...not worked out. through no fault of their own, muggsers just needs a very particular environment. but what is it? how can i find it?

"...but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years." ..."and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed)." thoughts, advice, anyone?

First...would it be possible to get her to a vet for a urine check for infections or crystals? Also have them check the anal glands, they could be impacted. Any of those 3 could be the cause of "litter box issues".
Second...talk to the vet, there are several medications that could help with "emotional issues" and spraying, such as paroxetine (generic Paxil) or Fluoxetine (prozac). you can get the generics fairly cheap @ wal-mart with a Vet's prescription.
If you want a copy of feline behavioral issues and treatments, you can find our g-mail addy in our profile, send us a quick note, and we'll send ya a copy.

This is off the top of my head and I may be totally wrong...but sometimes nursing homes and such find kitties very useful in helping to care for their residents.

They give them something besides themselves to focus on, something to love that will love them back no matter what and will appreciate the care given...and it's been PROVEN that having pets around is good for blood pressure and heartrate and general all-around health and well-being...
I wish you the best of luck...

actually, thats a great idea. i do think that an older owner would be very good for muggsers, and why not a bunch of older owners? thank you, id never thought of that but i will look in to it.

Further to the inappropriate litterbox behaviour.. And let me preface this with the info that none of our cats has any medical problem that would cause it. They're fine. They just have bad habits.

We've got 11 cats. 8 litter boxes, variously around the house in good spots, that they do use (we went through several brands of litter, and found some they would not use at all; they all seem to like the clumping Tidy Cats, though, and I've seen them all happily use it). Kitty, our first cat, used to pee in other places (like on fabrics (clean laundry!) or plastic bags) when she was unhappy with the condition of the litterbox: either it's too dirty, or I washed it too well (it didn't take me too long to suss out a happy medium that she was content with, but sometimes she'd pee on laundry anyway). Other cats picked it up from her. When we moved into the new house, they all flipped out about moving (I thought they might), and instead of going to the litter (which we showed them, and was near the food (though not too close, and we've spread them around the house to problem areas since, which means the litter-scooping process takes me like an hour, now), so they had to be there anyway), they decided to pee around all our as-yet-unpacked boxes of stuff we had piled up in the otherwise empty dining room. Probably because they were stressed, and the boxes smelled normal and safe.

I understood that, but they still do it, and after the dogs started pooping in the dining room during housebreaking (which is still ongoing...), the cats started pooping in there too. I've shampooed the carpets repeatedly with enzymatic pet solution, sprayed stuff, used feliway (spray and diffuser), and that will cut down on the pooping, but there are still a few who pee in there for no reason I can figure.

We also have an issue where my husband tends to leave piles of whatever (clothes, trash, books, papers, anything) laying around, and the cats seem to have decided that these piles also make good pee-spots. Two of the neutered adult males started spraying all on their own (they never had before), and they go around spraying all over everything now, including the couch where he sits (one of them has actually sprayed *me* before, but they don't hit any of my belongings or where I sit, and I find this interesting and wonder at the cause) and the walls and doors and everything. The two of them like each other, and I don't think they spray over top of each other's marking.. it seems to be one cat will just repeatedly spray in one part of the house, and another cat repeatedly sprays the other half of the house.

But they seem to have picked up the habit of peeing on anything fabric or plastic that gets left sitting around, so.. pot holders left out get peed on (just a little, not a full bladder), shrink-wrapped flats of bottled water, or bags of plastic cups, or *anything*. One of them (I don't know who) pees in the kitchen sink sometimes, which I guess is at least better than the alternatives, because the sink is usually empty, and it's stainless steel. If you leave a bowl of water out, and it gets empty, and stays that way for a little while (we have bowls of water all over, mostly because I can't trust the dogs out of my sight when they're in the house), they'll pee in the bowls. Again, not a full bladder, just a little.

I never know who's doing what, where. Hubby said he saw one of the (spayed) females spray a wall one time, in addition to the two males who do it. At this point the whole entire situation has just gotten out of hand, and I'm really not sure what to do about it.

Hubby and I will be splitting up, so there won't be piles of junk and nooks and crannies between piles of boxes of stuff all over the house anymore as little kitty temptations. Which is something. But there's still the dining-room-as-litter-box, and all the spraying all over everything. Feliway seems to do nothing for the spraying, afaict, but even if it did, I'd have to go through gallons of the stuff, all over the house (and it's not just along the bottoms of the walls: they hop up on the furniture and spray the curtains and walls and things there, and then on top of the bookcases and spray the tops of the walls, and they spray the furniture itself, etc. etc.).

And they're all fine, no medical problems. My vet has no ideas.

Help?

/have EIP if you want
//love my kitties, not getting rid of them, but wish I could have people over to the house sometimes

Check with MATC. My daughter is a graduate of their veterinary technology program. The animals they keep at the school receive the best of care; the students love animals, of course, and the program faculty are veterinarians. Typically they keep animals for a semester and then arrange adoptions for them. (My daughter has a "pit bull" that turns out to be mostly rottweiler per her DNA.)

oh fantastic! i had no idea matc had a vet tech program. that would be great! thank you!
