My aunt sent me a few lolcats in a e-mail. This one is my favorite because it looks very much like my Scooter, but it's not:

Also in the e-mail was the 34 cents couch cat.

And in preparation for his Birthday, Dragon has been hoarding his change for a special occasion such as this.

i415.photobucket.com

And special thanks to CooperDaCat for naming Dragon the Patron Saint of Couch Change for Caturday:

I will be posting numerous blanks of Dragon in the next few hours, the 3 that make me and Dragon LOL will each get a month of TF. The very best one will get 3 months, courtesy of the the change hoarding kiity!

Help! We need your help!

We just got a new kitty who joined our family on Monday. Unfortunately, we have drawn a total blank about what her name is. She is going to be B I G. She is pretty much unflappable, loving and playful, although she looks kinda stoned or emo most of the time. We have kitties named Louise and Aleeta already, but are totally stumped as to what THIS kitty should be called. So, a month of TF to whomever gives us a good (or the best) suggestion :)

I worked in an aviation museum and we had two cats that lived there. They caught mice and occasionally slept in an old printer box beside my desk. It was fun sometimes to see them race across the hangar when they saw something.

caturday, i need some advice.

regulars here may remember i have been posting a personal ad of sorts for my friends kitty to try and find her a new home. as he has already left for the east coast, she is staying alone in his apartment and i am cat sitting her. also, the duties of finding something to do with her have fallen to me. she's an 11 year old cat, which is the first strike against her. shes in good health, but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years. and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed). and then i discovered several wet spots on the carpet yesterday, which i had never seen before but the apartment smells so ungodly bad it's really hard to tell if its old or new smells. i knew she had issues with peeing on his girlfriends stuff (hence why the cat is being abandoned) but didnt realize until very recently that it seems to be worse than that.

ive asked around friends, strangers, here, craigslist...found nothing. the 3 cat rescues that contacted me back told me they would not take her because she cannot be rehomed. i have hopes that another local cat rescue may take her, but i have not been able to get ahold of anyone through it. if i take her to the humane society, she'll be put down.

what should i do? it makes me ill to think about having to put this sweet kitty down because her person didnt want her anymore and she's older and a little difficult. i only have until august 14th to figure this out. thoughts, advice, anyone?

First...would it be possible to get her to a vet for a urine check for infections or crystals? Also have them check the anal glands, they could be impacted. Any of those 3 could be the cause of "litter box issues".
Second...talk to the vet, there are several medications that could help with "emotional issues" and spraying, such as paroxetine (generic Paxil) or Fluoxetine (prozac). you can get the generics fairly cheap @ wal-mart with a Vet's prescription.
If you want a copy of feline behavioral issues and treatments, you can find our g-mail addy in our profile, send us a quick note, and we'll send ya a copy.

God, that's so sad. First, I would get her checked by a vet. The pee issues could be due to kidney disease - very common in older cats. Plus, if she's alone all the time she's probably confused/depressed. She needs contact or she will become increasingly distrustful & anti-social. And if you're not equipped to give her a home, are there any no-kill shelters/rescues near you that could take her? There might be some that are a ways away from you, but it might be your last option. I wish I could help.

Late answer, but I agree with the others who suggested the vet should be the first choice. She may have urinary problems or possibly diabetes. Also, since cats can't tell us if something is wrong with them, their behavior often changes to bring the problem to the attention of our tiny human brains.

Also, check out Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (new window). They have a lot of useful info on their site, and they accept all animals with problems. They do their best to make sure that every one of them get to go to their "forever home", but if not they can live out their lives with people that will care for them. Best of luck, and thanks for caring so much!

I'll feed the cat later jpg

You know how they tell you to rinse out all recyclable cans? Well I don't have to, I simply give them to Dragon and he does it for me! (and it really does NOT matter what was in the can, although he IS partial to peas of all things...)

Thanks for the caption!

You're welcome! Faust, our 12 year old boy, will eat anything including chinese food, most veggies, and even hot peppers. He's a nut!

Yeah, that sounds just like like my boy! But he is picky about his chinese food:

There's a wealth of published veterinary information out there on the subject of inappropriate elimination. It isn't often they are urinating out of spite - though it may feel that way to the person who's left to clean it up - but rather a litterbox aversion manifested through discomfort associated with the litterbox. This could be painful urination, being attacked by other cats when in the box or some other variable. A vet check is imperative at this point to rule out the former.

leftteffticle: caturday, i need some advice.

regulars here may remember i have been posting a personal ad of sorts for my friends kitty to try and find her a new home. as he has already left for the east coast, she is staying alone in his apartment and i am cat sitting her. also, the duties of finding something to do with her have fallen to me. she's an 11 year old cat, which is the first strike against her. shes in good health, but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years. and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed). and then i discovered several wet spots on the carpet yesterday, which i had never seen before but the apartment smells so ungodly bad it's really hard to tell if its old or new smells. i knew she had issues with peeing on his girlfriends stuff (hence why the cat is being abandoned) but didnt realize until very recently that it seems to be worse than that.

ive asked around friends, strangers, here, craigslist...found nothing. the 3 cat rescues that contacted me back told me they would not take her because she cannot be rehomed. i have hopes that another local cat rescue may take her, but i have not been able to get ahold of anyone through it. if i take her to the humane society, she'll be put down.

what should i do? it makes me ill to think about having to put this sweet kitty down because her person didnt want her anymore and she's older and a little difficult. i only have until august 14th to figure this out. thoughts, advice, anyone?

Oh, and a happy birthday to Dragon. Yay!

I've been meaning to pull off and resize these pics for a couple of weeks, and hand them over to you all for captioning. I can't think of anything good, but if you've got something I'd love to see it. They are proof that all cats must attempt to occupy any container that has not yet been occupied at least once. Sassy likes the sink, and Sonny found the box that I had just emptied of strawberries.

Are you still in the Madison area? You may have tried all these places, but still I wanted to give you some linky-links for no-kill shelters and places that will keep an animal who cannot be rehomed. She's a lovely kitteh, will keep paws and fingers crossed that she finds a forever home.

You, on the other hand, seem like a very kind and empathetic soul. How did you ever get to be friends? I hope something works out for you because I can tell you are frustrated and sad about the difficulty in resolving your unfortunate situation. Good Luck. Poor neglected kitty...

Hmmm...I've got a kitty like that name of Esme (she seems to have some British shorthair in her, so needed a British name...) so following that train of thought, how about Gytha (for Nanny Ogg)?
She is also..well, if not big, 'comfortably built', playful, and loving (in her own way) and it takes an awful lot to rock her boat.

We've got a new addition to the clowder as well. No pics cos I don't have a camera...but he's a 10-week-old little ninja with a shiatload of Siamese in the mix.
Friendly, affectionate, chatty little guy (purred all the way through his First Exam, except for the ear cleaning) and his dial goes all the way to 13.
I'm not kidding...this kid's lungs would do credit to an operatic tenor.

"...but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years." ..."and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed)." thoughts, advice, anyone?

This is off the top of my head and I may be totally wrong...but sometimes nursing homes and such find kitties very useful in helping to care for their residents.

They give them something besides themselves to focus on, something to love that will love them back no matter what and will appreciate the care given...and it's been PROVEN that having pets around is good for blood pressure and heartrate and general all-around health and well-being...
I wish you the best of luck...

Check with MATC. My daughter is a graduate of their veterinary technology program. The animals they keep at the school receive the best of care; the students love animals, of course, and the program faculty are veterinarians. Typically they keep animals for a semester and then arrange adoptions for them. (My daughter has a "pit bull" that turns out to be mostly rottweiler per her DNA.)

I take care of a small feral cat colony that lives near my house, and one of the younger cats, Sweet Pea (who really is that sweet!) actually caught an adult squirrel yesterday. I could not find my camera in time to catch the fight -- and oh did that squirrel fight! -- but I did catch her marching up the hill with her fresh catch. Feel free to caption or just marvel at the rare sight! :)

I used to enjoy caturday threads. I tend to read a post before the farker's handle on these types of message boards.

And then one caturday, I read the handles of the farkers posting, for I had figured it was a number of different people.

And there are plenty of posters in a caturday thread, but there is a core of disturbingly frantic participants. Not gonna lie, today it got a little creepy and awkward as I just kept reading

This has always been one of my favorite cat pics. Don't know who gets credit for this photo, saved it from an email I received.

It looks as if they are meditating - the child is trying to position his/her hands to match the cat's paws.

So, a month of TF to whomever gives us a good (or the best) suggestion :)

leftteffticle: caturday, i need some advice.

regulars here may remember i have been posting a personal ad of sorts for my friends kitty to try and find her a new home. as he has already left for the east coast, she is staying alone in his apartment and i am cat sitting her. also, the duties of finding something to do with her have fallen to me. she's an 11 year old cat, which is the first strike against her. shes in good health, but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years. and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed). and then i discovered several wet spots on the carpet yesterday, which i had never seen before but the apartment smells so ungodly bad it's really hard to tell if its old or new smells. i knew she had issues with peeing on his girlfriends stuff (hence why the cat is being abandoned) but didnt realize until very recently that it seems to be worse than that.

ive asked around friends, strangers, here, craigslist...found nothing. the 3 cat rescues that contacted me back told me they would not take her because she cannot be rehomed. i have hopes that another local cat rescue may take her, but i have not been able to get ahold of anyone through it. if i take her to the humane society, she'll be put down.

what should i do? it makes me ill to think about having to put this sweet kitty down because her person didnt want her anymore and she's older and a little difficult. i only have until august 14th to figure this out. thoughts, advice, anyone?

Oh dear. Sounds like our house. We got our Lilith (our tabby that looks so much like your "Yay Caturday" cat) from a friend who got her from a friend who got her from someone who got her from someone. So, by our reckoning, we're her home #4 or 5.

When we got her, she had improper urination issues (she peed on stuff), but fairly rarely. It's been 6 years and now it's almost every day. We've redone the basement floor last year and the new paint on the concrete is already peeling from what we not-so-affectionately call "Lake Lilith". I buy smell remover liquid by the gallon. She's been checked regularly by the vet, blood tests, you name it. There are enough litter boxes around and they are kept reasonably clean. The diagnostic, in so many words, is that she's messed up in the head, maybe from bad treatment as a kitten. We tried Prozac, but she was so scared from having to be fished out from under the bed twice a day to get her pill that it made things worse.

She's an old gal now (we think 14-15 years old), and the vet told us he would agree to euthanasia in her case if that's what we wanted, since this is a serious problem and she is not adoptable. It took her months to get used to me when I took her in (I was living alone at the time), and every time we moved has been a huge trauma for her, so going to a new home would just be massively unfair to her. And every time I have to throw away a brand-new area rug we think that the time may have come, that maybe putting her down is something we should consider.

Mind you, we've been saying that for a few years already, so she'll probably go to the bridge because of old age or suffocating by forgetting to breathe when she's fed her weekly can of skinless, boneless, tuna-style salmon. (Tuna is certainly not good enough for this queen).

Soooooooooooooooo... get her checked by a vet to rule out physical issues that could cause the improper elimination. Then, if nothing is wrong, discuss the alternatives with your vet. He/she may be aware of further resources to help out.

Get over yourself. Caturday is a nice way to relax. There is so much shiat going on in the world right now. If these farkers enjoy posting cat photos and caption them, what business of it of yours? Plus, there are many people on Fark that do not post in these threads but enjoy viewing them. (By the way, lurkers, come on out, we don't bite and enjoy any cat photo that isn't sick or violent!) Personally, my father and I view Caturday as bonding time, where we just sit and view the cats. We laugh. We snicker. We have fun. And if it wasn't for the Caturday posters you called out and the other Caturday posters, well, we wouldn't have a fun laugh each Saturday.

There are many Farkers that post here and enjoy the thread because the lolcats entertain them. There are some that can't have cats due to health issues but want one. This help feeds their cat lust. Farkers post in this thread when they have cat questions because they know there are people in this thread that truly and honestly care about cats. Farkers post in here as a support group for dearly departed cats that were family members.

So, if you don't like a few people dominating the Caturday threads, you can do two things: post cats yourself to get a variety, or, as this cat is captioned:

One thing you can do is take her picture and list her on Petfinder.com as a senior special needs kitty. But, the first thing to do is get her out of that apartment and bring her home, even if she has to stay in one room. Cats are social and she'll be missing her humans terribly, even if they left her behind. A good size crate or cage would contain messes and still be a better home than what she has.

Posting this for my mom and dad:

i445.photobucket.com

Hemingway came into our lives almost three years ago to the day. We'd seen this strapping big guy roaming the alley and the neighborhood for about a year before that, often keeping company with a sociable little female we called Muriel. She showed him that we were a reliable source of food. For a long time, we thought he must surely have a regular home because he was so friendly and eager to get to know us. But there are lots of apartments nearby and it's not unusual for cats to be dumped when their owners move out.

One day Bob was talking to Hemingway on the porch, when Hemingway spotted some birds in the yard, sneaked around behind a tree and pounced, slapped one bird straight out of the air, gave it a quick coup de gras, and dropped it into his food dish. "You see? This is what I've been forced to do for food!" Those big polydactyl paws helped. It wasn't long after that that he showed up for dinner with some bloody nicks in his head, and they didn't get treated. I was afraid that someone had shot him with a pellet gun, and obviously he was homeless.

We packed him off to the vet, where we learned that his injuries weren't serious, and that he must have been somebody's pet at one time, because he'd been neutered, but sadly, he was FIV+, probably from his year on the street. We couldn't bear to put him down, so we brought him home, making a safe area for him to keep him away from our other cats. When we let him out of the carrier, he was clearly overwhelmed with gratitude that he was still indoors. A home again!

He was so glad to be in the house that for the next six months he never looked out the windows. He was very gentle and his manners were perfect, and it took many more months before he was assured that it was all right to get up on the furniture. He was a great companion for watching television, reading, or working at the computer. His two joys in life were his laser-pointer toy and his brush. Can cats smile? Hemingway did when he started his diesel purr while being brushed. We'll miss that and we'll miss his company. RIP.

Now looky here Mr. Meer Markt:
This Caturday thread is a community which has come together in Cyberspace to support one another and foster a love of all things CAT. It is a refreshing change from the misogynists, fruit bats and wing nuts that typically dominate the other FARK threads. Anybody read the political thread lately? You'll see the same three or four names 'obsessively' posting.

I am a long-time lurker on Caturday because I do not have the time or the inclination to post pictures of our family's six cats, although ALL of the people whom you have accused of 'dominating' this thread have posted VERY simple directions to help newbies add their own pictures. Plus, our cats run and hide when the camera comes out--go figure.

Caturday is one of the few things I do for the sheer enjoyment--I look forward to it every week; it helps me relax after the working week is over, and I feel like a member of a community!

Caturday regulars: THANK YOU for Caturday. Our entire family enjoys it.

I'm trying to convince my boyfriend that we should get a second cat. My first cat loves me to pieces, and my boyfriend is a little jealous (seriously!) of the love I get from my Finnegan. There's a kitty I have my eye on, and I think Finnegan would enjoy having a buddy to play with since the bf and I are at work all day. Plus, I keep telling my boyfriend since he's home more than I am the kitten would probably adopt him as his person!

leftteffticle: caturday, i need some advice.

regulars here may remember i have been posting a personal ad of sorts for my friends kitty to try and find her a new home. as he has already left for the east coast, she is staying alone in his apartment and i am cat sitting her. also, the duties of finding something to do with her have fallen to me. she's an 11 year old cat, which is the first strike against her. shes in good health, but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years. and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed). and then i discovered several wet spots on the carpet yesterday, which i had never seen before but the apartment smells so ungodly bad it's really hard to tell if its old or new smells. i knew she had issues with peeing on his girlfriends stuff (hence why the cat is being abandoned) but didnt realize until very recently that it seems to be worse than that.

ive asked around friends, strangers, here, craigslist...found nothing. the 3 cat rescues that contacted me back told me they would not take her because she cannot be rehomed. i have hopes that another local cat rescue may take her, but i have not been able to get ahold of anyone through it. if i take her to the humane society, she'll be put down.

what should i do? it makes me ill to think about having to put this sweet kitty down because her person didnt want her anymore and she's older and a little difficult. i only have until august 14th to figure this out. thoughts, advice, anyone?

I'm sure the fact she has been left behind all by herself has not helped with her inappropriate peeing. She could be spite peeing, or maybe she is trying to tell someone she has something wrong with her urinary tract. See if you can get a vet to check her out for cheap.

Also, this is a stretch, but maybe a retirement home or something that might want to take an older cat as their community cat? I know you feel frustrated trying to think of some solution to this, but I want to encourage you - don't give up, be creative, and have hope.

I have been around cats all my life , only a few years ago did I realise cats eat squirrels I got quit the squirrel hunter here, but I havent found half squirel parts in a good while. I have watched him stalk them.

I always knew they *wanted* to eat them, but not that they could actually, ya know, GET them to eat them. LOL I was amazed! And squirrel parts? Ew. A little large on the carcass continuum for me in terms of what I'd like to find on my porch.

I think the worst/funniest thing my own cat Angel (see my profile) ever did was bring a mole into the house and entertain herself while I was asleep. I woke up to this rhythmic thumping noise and could not figure out what it was. I turned on the light, and there was Angel, throwing this dead mole up into the air with her mouth, over and over again, then batting it in midair and chasing the body as it soared. Both horrifying and ROFLcopter all at the same time. ;)

thank you everyone for advice. so far all the no kill shelters in the area have rejected her. i want to get her taken care of, vet wise, but i do not have the money right now...and well, shes not my cat though i love her and would contribute money to her happiness. but i already had to spend $200 on my own cats recently and i just...i cant spent another few hundred to get her checked out. i have to move soon and...i just cant. and her owner is unemployed so he can contribute no money. he took her for a checkup but couldnt afford the tests. i contacted the vet school at uw madison and they actually charge more than my current vet. im just...im worried cause ive tried to find her a home and everyone who has generously offered support has just...not worked out. through no fault of their own, muggsers just needs a very particular environment. but what is it? how can i find it?

"...but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years." ..."and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed)." thoughts, advice, anyone?

I wish you the best of luck...

actually, thats a great idea. i do think that an older owner would be very good for muggsers, and why not a bunch of older owners? thank you, id never thought of that but i will look in to it.

Further to the inappropriate litterbox behaviour.. And let me preface this with the info that none of our cats has any medical problem that would cause it. They're fine. They just have bad habits.

We've got 11 cats. 8 litter boxes, variously around the house in good spots, that they do use (we went through several brands of litter, and found some they would not use at all; they all seem to like the clumping Tidy Cats, though, and I've seen them all happily use it). Kitty, our first cat, used to pee in other places (like on fabrics (clean laundry!) or plastic bags) when she was unhappy with the condition of the litterbox: either it's too dirty, or I washed it too well (it didn't take me too long to suss out a happy medium that she was content with, but sometimes she'd pee on laundry anyway). Other cats picked it up from her. When we moved into the new house, they all flipped out about moving (I thought they might), and instead of going to the litter (which we showed them, and was near the food (though not too close, and we've spread them around the house to problem areas since, which means the litter-scooping process takes me like an hour, now), so they had to be there anyway), they decided to pee around all our as-yet-unpacked boxes of stuff we had piled up in the otherwise empty dining room. Probably because they were stressed, and the boxes smelled normal and safe.

I understood that, but they still do it, and after the dogs started pooping in the dining room during housebreaking (which is still ongoing...), the cats started pooping in there too. I've shampooed the carpets repeatedly with enzymatic pet solution, sprayed stuff, used feliway (spray and diffuser), and that will cut down on the pooping, but there are still a few who pee in there for no reason I can figure.

We also have an issue where my husband tends to leave piles of whatever (clothes, trash, books, papers, anything) laying around, and the cats seem to have decided that these piles also make good pee-spots. Two of the neutered adult males started spraying all on their own (they never had before), and they go around spraying all over everything now, including the couch where he sits (one of them has actually sprayed *me* before, but they don't hit any of my belongings or where I sit, and I find this interesting and wonder at the cause) and the walls and doors and everything. The two of them like each other, and I don't think they spray over top of each other's marking.. it seems to be one cat will just repeatedly spray in one part of the house, and another cat repeatedly sprays the other half of the house.

But they seem to have picked up the habit of peeing on anything fabric or plastic that gets left sitting around, so.. pot holders left out get peed on (just a little, not a full bladder), shrink-wrapped flats of bottled water, or bags of plastic cups, or *anything*. One of them (I don't know who) pees in the kitchen sink sometimes, which I guess is at least better than the alternatives, because the sink is usually empty, and it's stainless steel. If you leave a bowl of water out, and it gets empty, and stays that way for a little while (we have bowls of water all over, mostly because I can't trust the dogs out of my sight when they're in the house), they'll pee in the bowls. Again, not a full bladder, just a little.

I never know who's doing what, where. Hubby said he saw one of the (spayed) females spray a wall one time, in addition to the two males who do it. At this point the whole entire situation has just gotten out of hand, and I'm really not sure what to do about it.

Hubby and I will be splitting up, so there won't be piles of junk and nooks and crannies between piles of boxes of stuff all over the house anymore as little kitty temptations. Which is something. But there's still the dining-room-as-litter-box, and all the spraying all over everything. Feliway seems to do nothing for the spraying, afaict, but even if it did, I'd have to go through gallons of the stuff, all over the house (and it's not just along the bottoms of the walls: they hop up on the furniture and spray the curtains and walls and things there, and then on top of the bookcases and spray the tops of the walls, and they spray the furniture itself, etc. etc.).

And they're all fine, no medical problems. My vet has no ideas.

Help?

/have EIP if you want
//love my kitties, not getting rid of them, but wish I could have people over to the house sometimes
///also *really* tired of cleaning it all up

Check with MATC. My daughter is a graduate of their veterinary technology program. The animals they keep at the school receive the best of care; the students love animals, of course, and the program faculty are veterinarians. Typically they keep animals for a semester and then arrange adoptions for them. (My daughter has a "pit bull" that turns out to be mostly rottweiler per her DNA.)

oh fantastic! i had no idea matc had a vet tech program. that would be great! thank you!

I could not find my camera in time to catch the fight -- and oh did that squirrel fight! -- but I did catch her marching up the hill with her fresh catch. Feel free to caption or just marvel at the rare sight! :)

I have been around cats all my life , only a few years ago did I realise cats eat squirrels I got quit the squirrel hunter here, but I havent found half squirel parts in a good while. I have watched him stalk them.

I used to have a squirrel hunter who brought home presents. One day she was walking around the house with a half of a squirrel, I never could find the other half.
She also brought me a 3 ft black snake once. It wasn't dead yet, she left it on the porch so she could play with it for a while.

Now none of my cats go outside so I don't find assorted wildlife in my house anymore.

"...but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years." ..."and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed)." thoughts, advice, anyone?

The drugs (generic prozac) worked reasonably well for my parents cat Nero (who has the same issues) for a while, but eventually they stopped. But definitely give it a try, maybe you'll have better luck.

[snip for brevity]

What should I do? It makes me ill to think about having to put this sweet kitty down because her person didn't want her anymore and she's older and a little difficult. I only have until august 14th to figure this out. Thoughts, advice, anyone?

One thing you can do is take her picture and list her on Petfinder.com as a senior special needs kitty. But, the first thing to do is get her out of that apartment and bring her home, even if she has to stay in one room. Cats are social and she'll be missing her humans terribly, even if they left her behind. A good size crate or cage would contain messes and still be a better home than what she has.

Maybe one of the local rescues can do a courtesy listing and put the cat on Petfinder or Adopt a Pet. Adults are more difficult to find homes for, but there are some people out there will take on special needs cats.

leftteffticle: caturday, i need some advice.

regulars here may remember i have been posting a personal ad of sorts for my friends kitty to try and find her a new home. as he has already left for the east coast, she is staying alone in his apartment and i am cat sitting her. also, the duties of finding something to do with her have fallen to me. she's an 11 year old cat, which is the first strike against her. shes in good health, but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years. and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed). and then i discovered several wet spots on the carpet yesterday, which i had never seen before but the apartment smells so ungodly bad it's really hard to tell if its old or new smells. i knew she had issues with peeing on his girlfriends stuff (hence why the cat is being abandoned) but didnt realize until very recently that it seems to be worse than that.

ive asked around friends, strangers, here, craigslist...found nothing. the 3 cat rescues that contacted me back told me they would not take her because she cannot be rehomed. i have hopes that another local cat rescue may take her, but i have not been able to get ahold of anyone through it. if i take her to the humane society, she'll be put down.

what should i do? it makes me ill to think about having to put this sweet kitty down because her person didnt want her anymore and she's older and a little difficult. i only have until august 14th to figure this out. thoughts, advice, anyone?

I can't take any cat, as my cat is jealous of other cats and will attack them. (I had another cat for awhile, until she beat him up enough that she had him living on the back of the toilet, and my parents too pity and gave him a new home.) Also, I'm on the east coast, and can't imagine how I'd get the cat here even if I could take it, or knew someone who could. Surely someone out there will give her a home.

If she's difficult indoors, might she make a good farm or greenhouse cat? All the farms and greenhouses around here have cats. It's like a really big house for them, filled with dirt and plants, small rodents, and bugs to chase and eat. And it really doesn't matter if they spray here or there.

I also might suggest a bit of subterfuge here. You list a number of negatives about the cat, but no positives. Are there no positives? Make some up. Pretend you're selling an old car with some, uh, personality.

hahaha. you make a good point. i dont mean to focus on the negatives, but well...as much as i want to find a home for her, i feel its only fair if people know what they're truly getting themselves in to. its only fair for them AND muggsy.

but there are a lot of positives about her. she is just the sweetest kitty. shes a little shy and skittish, but as soon as you get to know her, she is sooooo loving. when i go to visit her, she emerges from her hidey spots and just falls to the ground, belly-up, asking for loving. if i sit and watch tv, she hops on the couch and rubs her face on me and demands petting. and when shes done with petting, she snuggles up next to me. and she's got these big, gorgeous yellow eyes and is so good at using them to her advantage. ive never met a kitty who could give such good puppy-dog eyes, haha. she's a wonderful cat, just wonderful.

Hi leftteffticle,

We had the same problem as you and found a solution that was last option. We were not open to it for a year or so before we did it, but we let her go outside. Our problem cat is an adorable 7 year old calico I inherited. Putting her down or taking her to the shelter was not going to happen. We tried everything short of kitty prozac, which I heard works for cats that mark the house. Long story short, she wanted to go outside and so we let her. This turned out to be the answer. She stays close to the house and comes in to eat and sometimes to spend the night - she loves people, loves being outside more. She went from being an unhappy, nervous wreck to a happy little cat. We don't have problems with her anymore. She hates other cats, but she is now friends with another outside cat and fends off other cats very well because she goes off the deep end if they even look at her - thus she is not worth the hassle to them.

I know that every cat's situation is different, but hopefully this can work for your cat. If she's marking or spite peeing, she might be a neurotic like our cat. If you don't want to set her outside, get her health tested and if she's healthy, kitty prozac and retraining her with Cat Attract litter could help a lot.

leftteffticle, nb.t t3.wy 'nkh.ti rnp.ti dj.t nhh, DoomsDayAardvark and anyone else out there with a cat who has an elimination problem...

We have had this problem also and know how frustrating it can be to try and figure out and control. We tried 3 different meds before we found one that worked (Paxil). He also had impacted anal glands and we think that was also contributing to the problem.

We have a document published by The American Association of Feline Practitioners about feline behavior and in it, there is a chart listing different medications to try based on specific symptoms and causes. It also explains the many reasons for inappropriate elimination. You can find it here (pops)

have you tried making totally a enclosed 25' [long] x 12'[wide] x 7' [tall] cat run out of green plastic chicken mesh on rectangular 2"x2" outdoor wood frames that can be tied or screwed together [use 8" triangles of 1/2" cdx plywood on corners of frames]
put alongside house & put several little cat houses in there, bushes or silk trees/plants, and a cat door to inside.

since you have Eleventy cats, 2 of these each side of house and one in the garden

thank you everyone for advice. so far all the no kill shelters in the area have rejected her. i want to get her taken care of, vet wise, but i do not have the money right now...and well, shes not my cat though i love her and would contribute money to her happiness. but i already had to spend $200 on my own cats recently and i just...i cant spent another few hundred to get her checked out. i have to move soon and...i just cant. and her owner is unemployed so he can contribute no money. he took her for a checkup but couldnt afford the tests. i contacted the vet school at uw madison and they actually charge more than my current vet. im just...im worried cause ive tried to find her a home and everyone who has generously offered support has just...not worked out. through no fault of their own, muggsers just needs a very particular environment. but what is it? how can i find it?

i really appreciate everything anyone has provided. please continue to advise.. im so upset over this.

sorry i dont have much helpful advice, im trying to figure the same thing out on a much smaller scale. kitty prozac might help? maybe if they were chilled out they wouldnt be so compelled to mark their territory.

I've gone through several bottles of feliway, and three diffuser refills, yes. It doesn't seem to make any real difference, which is what leads me to think it's habit now, more than nerves. There were litterboxes in there for a while, which they used *in addition* to the floor, but hubby got irate about having a toilet in the dining room, and I moved litter over to the powder room, which is adjacent. They use it. Too. Just as much as when there was litter in the dining room itself.

They don't have much in the way of territory issues, I wouldn't think. Only a few of the cats ever show any signs of caring about territory, and they're not the ones who pee everywhere. The others don't give a good rat's butt about territory, do not try to claim any, and don't seem to have any sense of being in some else's. The female we caught spraying is almost best friends with one of the males who sprays, and apparently will just spray where he does. Maybe she thinks that if he knows she's doing it, he'll like her more. I really have no idea.

We do have one cat who just stays in the bedroom all the time, and has made a habit of going under hubby's side of the bed (#1 and #2) because he's afraid of one of the other cats. That seems to be our only dominance/territorial issue, though.. they'll all share food equally and happily otherwise, and while there may not be room for two of them to drink out of a single water bowl at a time, there's no problem with sitting and waiting, and no fights about who goes next: it's just whoever happens to get there first, there's no pattern and no disagreement. Where one litterbox is next to another, they don't seem to have problems using them at the same time, and there's nobody waiting to pounce anybody when they come in or out. With a few rare exceptions (and the exceptions aren't the ones with the spraying or inappropriate peeing issues, except for bed-cat), this is a happy bunch, and they all get along just fine.

I can tell you, though, that trying to medicate the two boys who spray would just cause them to get absurdly upset. You've seen that 'how to pill cats' bit? The flamepoint is just like that. The black one (the one who's sprayed *me*, twice) isn't as bad, but he has an uncanny sense of when I intend him harm, and knows where to hide such that I cannot reach him. It would upset them both so much to try and give them calming drugs that it just wouldn't be worth it. And then that still wouldn't fix the issue of cats going into corners and in the dining room and just peeing normally.

So. Yeah, I saw your problem up there, and I sympathize, although I don't really have anything to offer. I would say that probably the issue getting worse is because she's alone, so as someone else said, if you can have her at your place, it would probably help some. Otherwise.. obviously I'm no help with pee issues :P

have you tried making totally a enclosed 25' [long] x 12'[wide] x 7' [tall] cat run out of green plastic chicken mesh on rectangular 2"x2" outdoor wood frames that can be tied or screwed together [use 8" triangles of 1/2" cdx plywood on corners of frames]
put alongside house & put several little cat houses in there, bushes or silk trees/plants, and a cat door to inside.

since you have Eleventy cats, 2 of these each side of house and one in the garden

Well. As I say, where the spraying happens, the two boys aren't overlapping. They just mark their own places repeatedly (like I guess the smell wears off). There's no competition, they don't spray the same places back and forth. And they groom each other, and like each other just fine. The other cats aren't territory marking, they're just squatting and peeing because for whatever reason, they like that spot. Our house is also about 2500 sqft, which is about 230sqft per cat if they wanted to stay away from each other. I know, some cats have huge ranges, but they don't seem to even need this much, for the most part, though. A lot of our cats are perfectly happy to sleep right on top of each other.

And no, I haven't built any exterior enclosures. We don't have a garden, just a front yard, a back yard, and a strip along either side of the house that's just wide enough to have to mow. Pets aren't allowed to be visible from the street per the HOA (unless they're in your windows, they can't make a rule about that, just the exterior spaces), which leaves out everything except the back yard. But only one of our cats wants anything at all to do with being outside, and he doesn't have any inappropriate litter issues. The others will look out the door like they're afraid demons are going to come in, and want nothing to do with it. Also, this is Texas, and we've been having a run of 100+ degree days, with the heat index pushing 110 or so, and I don't think being out in direct sunlight in the back yard would be a good idea. I don't leave the dogs out in it, I wouldn't want to leave cats in it either. Plus I'd have to cut through the brick house walls to install cat doors, and then I'd get even *more* ants in the house than we already do, which drives me at least as crazy as the cat pee. And wasps and hornets can get through chicken fence. And I have no idea what that gap in the environment envelope would do to our a/c-inflated electric bill.

So, um, outdoor cat storage not really an option, and they don't even seem to want it. Next idea? :)

Dear Caturday:

i are haz a rekwest.

"people aren't wearing enough hats". (oops) Caturday goes by too quickly.

for those of us who are (a) not usually early risers, (b) not on the Left Coast, and/or (c) generally lazy and slothlike not always getting our funnee pixures in so earlieez, it would be kewl if we could spread it out a bit over the day. OR at least, if all y'all would come back later and post moar or something, that would be really kewl.

not exactly sure what i am asking, but thought we'd toss this mouse into the thread and bat it about a bit. (it is a really nice smelling mouse too being all catnip-y and stuff!) please comment and do add, shoot down, or generally assist with this train of thought.

kthxbai. signed, "wanting Caturday to go on all weekend",
-tIdtmcats...

p.s. - even for us TF, getting in early isn't always all of the fun. :-)

p.p.s. - sorry for all of the mixed metaphors in the above. ;-)

Okay, I have a conspiracy theory. Caturday trolls seem to have gotten ... less offensive, more toothless (if you will) lately. And then we all have fun poking fun at them. Sometimes the trolls even post their own cat pictures, which is kind of, huh?

So my conspiracy theory: there's a group of Caturday lovers who have realized that once one troll posts, we are less likely to see more. So they take turns with alts pretending to be trolls to head the real trolls off at the pass. And then we all have fun posting pics making fun of them (I LOVE the "OUT!" kitten).

I'm probably way off base and will go back to my tin foil hat now. :)

Catless lurker here, piping up to wonder why every other week some wannabe-killjoy spouts off in here, whining about Caturday.

I don't understand the pissy attitude, dude. The people you cite are not being inappropriate in the thread. I personally don't give a kitty-poop who does the posting, how may posts someone posts, blahblah. I just come by here every Saturday with the knowledge that I'm going to be amused and touched, and cry a little about someone's beloved cat dying recently, and AWWWWWing at the pix of someone's new bebeh kitteh.

I *depend* on Caturday for a lot of emotional reasons, most of them having to do just with getting my Cuteness quota, but not all of it being just that.

And did I forget to say Piss Off if you don't like it?

We crush up the cat pills and mix it in with their food. Have never had a problem. Maybe you could try that? And, there are some, like prozac, that's available in liquid form. They can still smell the medication but can't pass up the fishy cat food smell. It took ours a couple of days to really get into the "new taste" but he just gulps it down now.

Yeah, I'm thinking it (paxil) might be a good idea for the under-the-bed cat, to ease some of his anxiety. Nine times out of ten it's him getting defensive that sets the other cat off. And he's much easier to medicate; he'll even take pills, as long as I give him something special afterward. How much does it cost? Pills cheaper than liquid, or vice versa? And this is a prescription you get from your vet, that you fill at a people pharmacy, like Walgreens? I didn't know people pharmacies would do that, but Paxil is a people medicine, and the online pet drug places don't seem to carry it.

The others, though.. it just seems to be more like a bad habit, than anything they need drugs for. Maybe having the house cleaner in general will help, and when hubby moves out he'll end up taking some of the furniture and bookcases and whatnot, so perhaps it will be less like an inviting maze in which to pee (the only places they squat-pee where they're not supposed to is in the dining room, or in the study, which is his room full of junk). I'm certainly hopeful.

I still find it interesting that the two who spray, don't spray where I sit, or on things that are specifically mine. They know I'm the boss, I guess?

Our vet calls in a prescription to WalMart. We use the generic Paxil. It's called Paroxetine. It's pretty cheap. He gets it once a day and it costs about $10/month.

Hm. Not a bad idea for fabrics, but it requires saturation of the object you want to de-smell, and I don't think that will work on my walls. The bookcases could take it.. but not the books. The doors and the table legs would be ok.. and hubby's couch, although at this point that thing's so filthy it just needs a good solid cleaning anyway, cat pee or no cat pee. Most of the spraying is on the walls, though, so this would only be a spot solution for me. Assuming the behaviour isn't just habitual.

If I had a job, and some kind of money, I'd invest in all sorts of products, but at this point, with no job, no prospects, and hubby moving out in a month (I may end up rather homeless, and no telling *what* would happen to the cats then; if any of you know any rich people who find their pockets are too heavy..or even a dozen semi-rich people..), I'm leery of trying out things that may or may not only partially solve the problem.

Too bad feliway doesn't work for de-stressing humans. I could use some :P

Hm. I just talked to my local Kroger pharmacy, and it's on their $4 plan. So, $4 for a month, or $10 for three months. I'll have to talk to my vet about this on Monday, because if it calms him down so he doesn't feel like he has to poop under the bed, and it's that cheap, and since he's easy to drug (all it costs me is thirty seconds and three treats), I may very well go for it. Thanks!

Those are two of my current four (my brother actually has two of his own also). The black one is Zeus, and the Russian Blue is Gray. He (Gray) was actually just a scrawny stray last summer when my mom found him. Now he's our fattest cat. He's also very non-threatening; when we got Yuschi (our tabby, might post a pic later or next week), he kind of flipped out, and for a while we had to keep the two of them separated sometimes, as they'd fight and we'd find clumps of cat hair all over the upstairs hall (though you wouldn't notice any missing from either of them, of course). Gray doesn't have any problems, he's friendly toward both of them.

Awwww, thanks, TheShavingofOccam123, that's exactly what I was looking for! :) I'm showing that to the hubby when he wakes up.

As for the trolls: *Fat raspberry!* :P

For things I do to my cats...: I'm on the Left Coast, too, and I just woke up. (Weeknds + sleeping in = awesome!) I'll be posting more pics of the boys once I've gotten a shower and something to eat, so don't worry, Caturday will go on a little bit longer.

Gray doesn't have any problems, he's friendly toward both of them.

i have a Russian blue that i am in the process of semi-adopting that i have named Gary. :-)

this is kind of an odd pic of him and he is part Tabby. from different angles, he looks different. he reminds me of some of the other Blue's here especially the one with the two in the cooler. :-) he's in the yard here enjoying his favorite, a chicken leg.

catpants: Our 15 year old boy who passed away from cancer in 2003. One of the sweetest cats ever. He used to jump up and pretend to be a hat when my daughter was on the changing table. And he'd purr her to sleep. I still miss him.

reminds me much of my Queen Penelope. when it was cold, she would sleep under the blanket in my armpits or on my shoulder and always woke me up with cute kitty kisses. "Feed meow?" she'd softly ask. she too was 15 when she lost her battle. she was dealing with kidney issues, but cancer took her in the end as well.

perhaps they are playing together. she would find your guy quite handsome. >^..^<

Well, I seem to have a different problem than the rest of you this Caturday. While most of your kitties' problems are spraying instead of using the litterbox, ours are TOO interested in it. The human litterbox.

If we forget to close the toilet lid, shortly afterwards they'll come into the bathroom, dip their paws in, and lick them off! D:

The water dish is always full with clean water (we get the Alhambra service, so even the cats & ferret get good water!), so it's not that, but for some reason they are FASCINATED by the toilet! The only thing we can think of is finding a way to use Bitter Apple or something to discourage behavior, but since there are no time-release tabs like there are bleach ones for the tank, we're not quite sure what we can do. I mean, yeah, keep the toilet lid closed, but we're looking for something a bit more permanent. Anyone ever had experience with this? We've had cats for a combined total of almost 40 years and we've never seen this before. Weird cats!

They also have a plastic bag fetish. They don't eat them, they just chew on them, like we do bubble gum. Doesn't mean we still don't find white pieces of "something" in the litter box now and then...

Oh well, less talking, more picturing. Sassy seems to be making it his mission to fuzz up every piece of clothing in the house, even if they're already in the laundry (making up for lost time?), and Sonny knocked my big, fuzzy squirrel off the top of my computer the other night to reign tall over the living room, before he jumped onto some other shelving to chase a spider on the ceiling. Silly boy!

Oh, I can't believe I didn't upload a couple of these sooner. I had forgotten all about Sassy taking over the hubby's pants. (Though in his defense, they both outgrew those kitty beds several months ago.) These cats are WEIRD. They LOVE our clothes. The moment we take something off they're right there, absorbing our precious leftover body heat, and usually go to sleep right there. That's not so bad, but when I'm trying to do laundry and they insist on lying on/playing with everything, well, laundry day takes twice as long to finish. But it's twice as fun!

And look at that happy pic of Sonny down there. He's our Buddha Kitty. As long as he's in the same room with us, he's purring, and he gets this great look of absolute contentment and happiness, as though everything is right with the world. Purrvana, he has it. :)

He also loves Beethoven, the white ferret in the last pic. They play so nice together.

CooperDaKat: picture of kitteh and broken vase

This made me think of a poem from Poetry for Cats by Henry Beard:

To A Vase
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Cat

How do I break thee? Let me count the ways.
I break thee if thou art at any height
My paw can reach, when, smarting from some slight,
I sulk, or have one of my crazy days.
I break thee with an accidental graze
Or twitch of tail, if I should take a fright.
I break thee out of pure and simple spite
The way I broke the jar of mayonnaise.
I break thee if I'm in a playful mood,
And then I wrestle with the shiny bits.
I break thee if I do not like my food.
And if someone thy shards together fits,
I'll break thee once again when thou art glued.

Sleep is goooood. So is tea, as well as is Caturday. My day is awesome so far!

nb.t t3.wy 'nkh.ti rnp.ti dj.t nhh: Mine pee in a few rooms too. Normal squat-peeing. Trying to solve that too. Driving me mad.

That's the thing, though, they only pee in the litterbox, and they're very good about it. Heck, if it gets too dirty, they'll throw little kitty fits and pout and refuse to be petted until it's cleaned. Funny boys!

They may be entertained by the rippling water. Maybe try one of those pet fountains. But you should close the lid anyway, just to avoid the icky spray when you flush :)

Hunh, that's an idea. Stockton water is GROSS (hence the Alhambra delivery), and toilet water much more so since we're in olllld apartments. We have one of the "water cooler" water bowls for them (since we're gone during the day so much and it gives them a several-day backup), and it works okay, but they don't seem to be as keen on it as they do the plain, shiny-metal water bowl. Will have to try the flowing-fountain one once we get a bit more spare cash, as those are supposed to be good for digestive health anyway.

And am I a bad person? I keep seeing your username and wanting to reply "gesundheit" or something. :P

First off, I want to thank all you wonderful farkers who suggested some really great names for our kitty. She has been going by Lil Bit all week, and that will shortly be out of date, given how much she EATS.

PachelbelsCannon and I read through all of Caturday, talked about it, thought about it, and considered (very seriously)

Easy: We really liked this name. Unfortunately Louise our 7 yr old cat is often called Weezie. Since we already have a confused house with a dog named Mandy and a son named Andy, we couldn't do that to the little cat too.

Domino This was also a fantastic choice for a name, but we are lazy. We couldn't see walking around the house yelling "Dom-in-ooooo" over and over. It didn't shorten to anything simple so, with regret, we had to go to our third choice.

Har le Quin: Our little kitty is named Harlequin. It shortens to "Harley" which suits her loud grumbly purr and gravelly meow. She has the catitude of an Easy Rider. (sorry sherpa18). She also has Harlequin markings, as a quick GIS showed. White cat with some other colour spotched on.

To those who thought of Phantom of the Opera, you were right on the money. To the 420 contingent, thanks!

An honourable mention to missionpants who obviously went to some trouble to post ALL those names in a pic.

And thanks to anybody else we missed. There were a LOT of you, and that makes us really grateful.

So, TF to our winner, Booboopriss for Har le Quin and to missionpants, who worked so hard for us.

linuxpyro: Wow, he looks very cute. Gray's looks like he has some very faint tabby stripes, but for the most part he's a solid color.

unfortunately, both of these pics make Gary look different than he normally does in person. when he comes walking up to the door on the walkway, he looks very svelte, trim, groomed, and almost solid blue gray. but, here he is again at any rate. :-)

he's an odd one. he, like all of my other guys, just showed up one day. but unlike others, he doesn't really want to "stay". he "comes over", has some food pretty much every day, usually twice. he'll visit, he'll eat, he'll lounge, he'll have some 'nip. but then he "has to go". i have tried to make sure that he isn't someone else's and am pretty certain that he is not. i moved recently, just two blocks away, and he had to have me help to find the new place. he was hanging out where i had moved from. i walked around, sure enough, found him over there, and showed him the new place, and he has resumed his normal rounds. i am sure he is eating other places too, but i even went to far as to tie some notes on a collar on him asking someone, anyone, to call me, remove the notes, put their own note on, et cetera, but nothing. he's very sweet and gets along with LittleOne (who actually is a slut and gets along with any-cat-one). and he LOVES teh 'Nip. rolls around, eats it, gets all stoned, you name it.

peachy92: meer markt: Little obsessive much? We all have our vices, but dominating a fark caturday thread?

Get over yourself. Caturday is a nice way to relax. There is so much shiat going on in the world right now. If these farkers enjoy posting cat photos and caption them, what business of it of yours? Plus, there are many people on Fark that do not post in these threads but enjoy viewing them. (By the way, lurkers, come on out, we don't bite and enjoy any cat photo that isn't sick or violent!)

I can only agree that there are a few dedicated farkers who post LOLcats, and as a long term lurker all I can say is:

Thank You to you wonderful people.

Being from Oz I'm always late for this, but a great way to spend Sunday morning.

AND if someone hadn't posted about Siberians and that they are hypo-allergenic last October, I wouldn't now have my two cats Sabina and Vasya.

But yes must get my act together and post them - just need to find the best place to store the photos - any suggestions?

So thanks to the posters - you are why most of us stay here each week.

Hmmm, that IS a thought. I dunno if they get much in they way of shinies and sparklies in their bowl, but they DO love sitting in the window (especially when I open it for the breeze), and they adore crinkly, noisy toys and shiny objects. No, leave the hyphens in, you just have to type it in manually. The fark security program somehow reverses the address to prevent
spamming. I can't post someone else's addy here, that is frowned upon. If you still have problems, email me at my user name @gmail.com and I'll put you in touch.

leftteffticle: caturday, i need some advice.

regulars here may remember i have been posting a personal ad of sorts for my friends kitty to try and find her a new home. as he has already left for the east coast, she is staying alone in his apartment and i am cat sitting her. also, the duties of finding something to do with her have fallen to me. she's an 11 year old cat, which is the first strike against her. shes in good health, but hasnt had a full check-up with urine and blood tests in...well, years. and she has litter box issues. she "spite-pees" when shes mad. and just a few days ago i caught her spraying (she's spayed). and then i discovered several wet spots on the carpet yesterday, which i had never seen before but the apartment smells so ungodly bad it's really hard to tell if its old or new smells. i knew she had issues with peeing on his girlfriends stuff (hence why the cat is being abandoned) but didnt realize until very recently that it seems to be worse than that.

ive asked around friends, strangers, here, craigslist...found nothing. the 3 cat rescues that contacted me back told me they would not take her because she cannot be rehomed. i have hopes that another local cat rescue may take her, but i have not been able to get ahold of anyone through it. if i take her to the humane society, she'll be put down.

what should i do? it makes me ill to think about having to put this sweet kitty down because her person didnt want her anymore and she's older and a little difficult. i only have until august 14th to figure this out. thoughts, advice, anyone?

First, don't give up yet. Every cat deserves a chance.
Second, Take her to a vet as soon as possible. Most inappropriate urination problems are a result of a urinary tract infection.
Last, Look for cat food that is marked "For Urinary Tract Heath". For example: Friskies has a Special Diet food that I would recommend.

My sweet 16 year old kitty had problems about 8 years ago. She was peeing in the worst places...Couches...rugs. The vet kept her overnight and gave her a strong antibiotic. After that Urinary tract health food only. No problems since. Have patience and practice consistency. Hang in there and good luck.

Just to set the record straight....this is Offacue's Wife.

Stuff about kitty tranquilizers and feel-better pills...

My vet uses a lot of homeopathic and naturopathic remedies to help with behavioral issues...the most all-around useful being Rescue Remedy.
Bach Flower Remedies can be fine-tuned for dealing with specific behaviors and troubles.
They don't knock kitty out, or make them drowsy, or loopy, or give them G.I. issues or anything like that. They just help any furkid be more at ease and happier with their world and environment.
I've used them for grief issues when my Riktor turned into Catzilla after the Boss (alpha cat, and his beloved mentor) Misha was killed...it stopped the aggressive, hostile behavior within two days and my Purry Boy Riktor was back.
I've since used them for him for other things since he is the least adaptable cat in the clowder and has the greatest difficulty with changes of any kind.

They don't have the side effects of some of the bigger guns (Paxil, Prozac, etc...) and can be administered via their drinking H2O.

Rescue Remedy definitely has it's place. It did a wonderful job helping our Border Collie deal with thunderstorms. However, it did nothing to help with the elimination problem. Neither did Feliway, lavender, marjoram, or anything else we tried. The only thing that has helped has been the Paxil.

We tried several other medicines that didn't help him. He is on a small dose of Paxil once a day and it doesn't leave him sleepy, or doped up. The only thing it has done, is make him calmer and helped him find his chi by taking the edge off his attitude and his "freak outtedness" & he is not spraying anymore. We are believers of Eastern/holistic remedies but sometimes you need good old fashioned medicine to solve a problem.

By the way, that is a Dog Nylabone beside her, not a big blunt.

Hey, whatever works....
and sometimes you gotta bring out the big guns.
I just feel they belong way down on the list rather than as automatically a 1st option...
apparently you feel the same, going by your post.

Case in point: couple weeks ago my white ninja Wimsey had a subluxated (partially dislocated) elbow. One vet said "Surgery" right off the bat.
I'm thinking "I can haz 2nd opinion plz?" and not just because of the cost...

Found a WONDERFUL vet who does osteopathic and chiropractic medicine...a couple adjustments, some acupuncture (Wimsey was a very cooperative boy!) and after two weeks house arrest (as opposed to six weeks in a crate which would have been necessary following surgery) and Wimsey's as good as new.

I've been using Photobucket for a while, and other than its constant attempts to get you to click on ads and visit its various sponsors (LOLAdblock FTW), it's pretty solid and looks like it lets you store unlimited pictures. To those who lost loved ones this week, my thoughts are with you. Hardly a Caturday goes by that I'm not moved to tears at least once by sadness as much as by laughter and delight. This is something most of us share. Yet I always feel I don't know what to say, or that I can't say the right thing.

OK all, I thought we were done with the Dragon birfday caption contest, but a couple of late entries made us rethink things. (yeah, WE, Dragon is now losing his mind over a new shakey mouse...but when he settles down, we will discuss it) so we will be back in a little while to award the winners.

Well, Caturday is almost over, but my neighbors came over this evening. One of the strays they've been caring for just had kittens and was hit by a car a few days later. :( So they brought over kitten goodness!

This is Savannah, who pretty much slept on my boobs the whole time.

And Sierra was really fiesty and gnawed on my neighbor's hand the whole time.

They're all so sweet and I fell in love with Savannah. They'll be old enough to adopt in eight weeks, and I'd take Savannah if I didn't have two guinea pigs.

AprillaDeVille: And now for Caturday AFTER DARK:

Those were great! I LOL'd.

Reminds me of the time I moved in with someone who had a fixed male cate (and a couple of little dogs). Anywho, she had a cute antique teddy bear on her bed, and she mentioned how much her cat loved to snuggle with it.

One day I happened to observe the kitty's "interaction" with said teddy bear, and I asked if she was sure the cat was fixed. She said, "Oh, most definitely"! I told her I thought that the cat was being "amorous" with the teddy bear. She didn't believe me, so I said watch him the next time he's "playing" with the teddy bear, then tell me what you think.

All the time she had this cat, he had been humping that teddy bear several times daily. When it was finally pointed out to her, she was shocked. Needless to say, to this day, I still chuckle every time I think about that.

/sorry, no pics, but it really did happen
//would that have made the cat some kind of a "furry"?

DoomsDayAardvark: Posting this for my mom and dad:

RIP.

They tell me that they've got more pics, but they haven't been able to get them to me yet.

syzygy whizz: My vet uses a lot of homeopathic and naturopathic remedies to help with behavioral issues

Yeah, I've tried feliway, and .. uhm, something that gets added to the water, the name of which I can't recall now. It didn't do anything for the general mood of the group (which is pretty relaxed anyway), and it didn't do anything to help Butters (the cat who hides under the bed). Nine times out of ten, if he gets into a disagreement with another cat, it's because he started acting yeowly and defensive before they even noticed he was there. That triggers them to get aggressive, and then you have yeowling kitty fight down the hall until he's safely hidden under the bed again. No serious injuries, thank god, but it's noisy as all get-out, and it makes him scared to come out. Which means he pees and poops under the bed a lot, and only goes down to the other room to scarf down as much food at a time as he can. He'll eat what my 'gorge on it and then hork it back up' kitties deposit in the bedroom, too, to save having to go down the hall.

That said, there are only three cats in the house he has that problem with. The others just don't react if he acts scared, so he's stopped acting scared with them. The others are the ones more prone to being pushy, though, and when they see him acting up.. well. It reinforces itself. If I could just get him to calm down a little, and not flip out as soon as he sees the other kids, I'm thinking that might just break the chain, and pretty soon they'd be past it, and I could probably try getting him off the meds (I think you have to wean SSRIs, but that's not a problem). I've tried the water additives and stuff, and they just don't seem to do squat for him (or remove the tiny bit of aggression he draws out in the others).

And man, acupuncture? My cats would puncture anybody who tried that on them. They're pretty patient, but they have their limits, and that would cross them :)

L33t Squirrel: And while I still have and use the pillowcases, I lost the bedskirt a few years back when I accidentally left a load of stuff overnight in the public washing machines at one of our old apartments and it got tossed. :(

I only ever had one pillowcase, and never the bedskirt (it was a dorm, my bed was on a shelf :P). But man, that's one reason I'm so glad not to be in an apartment anymore, shared laundry rooms. I can slum around in my own house naked as a jay-bird while my laundry washes, and I don't have to worry about it getting stolen, or the machine opened up mid-cycle so some hooligan can paw through it and take what he wants, and then left there like that. I also like having a proper-sized kitchen, and not being able to hear people through my walls. Having a house is *nice*.

/fear of losing it due to divorce is not :P

For anyone who doesn't read Japanese, the text in that pic means, more or less, "interesting!" :)

Oh well, time for me to log off and do stuff before bed. And the hubby loved the "Purrfait" lol of Sonny. Thanks again! Bedtime for me soon-ish. See you all again next Caturday!

leftteffticle: thank you SHG for the links, i tried country and they rejected her. my hopes are with angels wish. i will branch out to farther from madison now and see what i can find. milwaukee and chicago are my next markets, anyone have any advice about no kills/rescues in either city?

thank you everyone for advice. so far all the no kill shelters in the area have rejected her. i want to get her taken care of, vet wise, but i do not have the money right now...and well, shes not my cat though i love her and would contribute money to her happiness. but i already had to spend $200 on my own cats recently and i just...i cant spent another few hundred to get her checked out. i have to move soon and...i just cant. and her owner is unemployed so he can contribute no money. he took her for a checkup but couldnt afford the tests. i contacted the vet school at uw madison and they actually charge more than my current vet. im just...im worried cause ive tried to find her a home and everyone who has generously offered support has just...not worked out. through no fault of their own, muggsers just needs a very particular environment. but what is it? how can i find it?

i really appreciate everything anyone has provided. please continue to advise.. im so upset over this.

she's so pretty, someone has to be able to love her.

Surely SOMEONE on here is a vet and can help this person?? This is heartwrending.

ninderry: peachy92: meer markt: Little obsessive much?

So thanks to the posters - you are why most of us stay here each week.

yay! that was (probably) me!!!! i'm so happy you have kitties to love now!!

I tend to have trouble believing that the cats in TFA earn their room and board. I haven't come across a cat yet that is able to work. Unless, of course, you're talking about being super adorable and entertaining, then, yes, cats can easily earn their keep.
