sweeneytoad: What sucks is that the ones in my cohort who got their MS in applied soc got all the jobs, and those of us who took the MA route didn't, well, not sociology related jobs anyway.

Yeah, just a little bitter ;)

Same here. Our cohort is primarily thesis (both sociology and applied sociology are MAs, so we're thesis or project) students, but we have been building our applied program for a little while, and I think it may be the first cohort to be mainly thesis students. Save for a couple of students, I think our thesis students all have gone on to Ph.D.s while all our applied students have jobs and pay taxes and other such adult things.

Uchiha_Cycliste: What DO sociologists do, outside of teach and law? Not condescending, genuinely curious.

Grant-writing, program evaluation, some do work with GIS for government agencies (at least, that's why I had to learn it in applied skills supposedly), social/ demographic research and polling, among other things.

I plan to teach, research, and write because I wasn't ever very good at the whole work thing. :-P

Is Hr for a non-profit the same as Hr for an engineering company?
Does the data/market analysis require using the skills you learned with respect to human interaction and society, or the skills you picked up necessarily from statistics to understand and deconstruct collected data?

I'm not sure if there is a difference. I am not familiar with the area. Most of the skills the others use in their jobs does come from stats classes, program evaluation and even at times some grant writing. They werent required for me, but I did take program evaluation and really enjoyed it. I wouldn't give up my thesis experience for anything but I wish I had taken some more applied skills classes. Live and learn!

How much of the ability to do these things did you guys pick up from sociological theories and the understanding of people, and how much of it is applied math or stat? I think actually real life application of the stuff I've read would be really neat.

Egalitarian - Dudes are dudes. Also it's not as gross when the guy doing the checking-out is good-looking, not old, and relatively classy.

It would be a little nasty if it were Henry Kissinger or Carrot Top. Or 90's era Bill Clinton, for that matter.

So, you're saying women vilify the exact same conduct from one man that they approve in another based solely on looks?

Wow... women are shallow evil coonts.

Oh come on, there's a "teacher screwing a student" thread on Fark almost every day, and most of you guys high-five each other if the chick is hot. It's only if the teacher was fat/old/ugly that you're disgusted.

What I failed to explain clearly in my previous post was that behavior also counts. I recently had a guy lean out a car and yell "NICE TITS" at me. He was a good looking guy in his 20's but his delivery was so nasty, it was rather offensive. Contrast that with an old guy coming up to me (when I was much younger) and saying that I was very pretty, in a classy sort of way and not sleazy at all ... that was nice.

I'm just sayin, the good looking 40 year old guy who looks at your ass but doesn't yell "NICE ASS" scores more points than the Don Rickles or Shea LaPoof who tries to goose your crotch while making a Harpo Marx horn-honking sound.

IRT SFlaxx - If the photo's skewed, so be it, it's a skewed or misleading photo. If the photo's accurate he looks stupid as anybody in their forties or even thirties would look.

If I were in the public eye either in photos or on film I would look incredibly IDIOTIC. My face is too mobile, I would blink my eyes and gesticulate too much. Faced w/the onslaught of flashbulbs would result in a disastrous photograph, probably w/my eyes shut and a grimace. My quirks which MIGHT be likeable or even charming in RL would look possibly, at best, neurotic, at worst, sinister.

However, I am not Barack Obama or any other public figure who has been in the public eye almost continuously for the last 4 yrs? I have not been trained for the public eye neither am I the PotUS at a public event who is used to and schooled in maintaining a public face.

In everyday life I am able to maintain, as are most males or females I know, when confronted w/badaboom or wtfweretheythinkingorsaying???!! a straight face.

I mainly wrote in reply to the idea that it is either cute or acceptable for a 40 something, let alone the PotUS, to leer at someone's ass.

It's not evil either but it is immature and it isn't attractive.

Just my opinion.

To the Fox News twats, to Malkin and Rush and Coulter, and to all the others of your dying breed who are grasping at this particular straw, I say go for it. It's like watching a couple of mean old stray dogs finding some bones and gristle in a dumpster. You know that those dogs would have ripped your throat out in their prime, and they still kind of scare you, and they certainly repulse you. But in the end you just have to pity them, cause the snow's started to fall, and you know those wretched things won't be here in the spring.

I'm gonna miss you zany fascist retards.

Obama was trying to act all hetero without having an understanding of what a heterosexual leader of a country would do in his situation.

I think the Euro leaders might have punked him into it though. They are all laughing about how they punked the gay American President into acting sexual about the young girl. I'm more pissed at the euros for making a mockery of our gay American President than at Obama himself.

Of the above, I'd say little of it is theory-driven. Demographic research probably has (or can have) some theoretical component, but it is possible to avoid theory almost entirely in applied sociology. It's not that sociology is being applied so much as data and statistics, which is why I'm sticking to academia.

That said, a friend is finishing her thesis this summer, and she is using the new ecological paradigm (environmental sociological theory about societal interaction with the environment, which I know next to nothing about) to measure attitudes towards recycling in our state (TN) and is using that to develop environmental education programs. She's writing grants to have the programs funded as well. I suppose that could be a real life application?

Are there applications for Sociology where you use models and theory to make predictions and direct actions?
Say you have a goal, and that goal involves changing the behaviors of many. Actually, I guess this is very similar to your recycling friend. Can you write down what you know about people, (which I guess she is doing), take that and figure out how to get them to change? Kind of like chess. For instance, if we do this, then they should react like that. However if we do this instead, they will likely do that, and then if we do that afterward, they should respond like this. I guess it becomes a hybrid of Soc and Psych. More specifically it you begin to use the theories of deviance and control, where you define deviance to be the behavior you want people to adapt, and your goal being to get as many of them to do so such that it becomes the norm.

It's true that anyone with normal heterosexual tendencies who would say that they can't be sexually attracted to a fresh looking 17 year old are lying, but we create societal standards that says it's off limits. A President that needs to make a public scene around it is acting...odd...to say the least. All real heterosexual males know that you can't make a public scene looking at that stuff if you are President of the United States of the freakin America...for goodness sakes.

There is a back up tattoo on the small of her back. Think of it this way, she's probably gonna get a tramp stamp there anyways, so if you glance and DON'T see a tramp stamp, she's probably under 18. However it never hurts to go in for closer inspection.
