Nice. Not a .399 or a .401 like some people who claim .40

to paraphrase bob uecker

I don't doubt that the guy was shiatfaced, but when I see these stories of someone blowing .40 on a breathalyzer, my feeling is more that the breathalizer farked up than them actually being that drunk.

At .40, you're probably in a coma.

.40 BAC? How is he not dead? I don't think even serious alcoholics can have a .40 and still function.

Good thing the cops opted for a blood test after that reading. Something like that would most likely have been thrown out of court.

Our local premium wine store sells disposable BAC analysers. You blow through the thing and it will indicate your % on a scale. It's kinda like a built in battery tester.

So, we bought a bunch of them and figured out how drunk we could get. I passed out at about .45 and I'm a big guy. That was after we split a 100 pounder of rum. I was demolished.

You know, I totally read this headline and thought you were talking about the handgun.

There was a story a few years back in either RI or CT about a guy with a .375 BAL or something that was functioning perfectly fine, according to the cop that arrested him. I'll see if I can find it.

I had a friend who ended up in the hospital after jumping out of a moving car and his blood test came back at almost .40. If I recall it was a .396. He was very intoxicated, but nowhere near a coma.

The hospital didn't release him for almost 24 hours because his BAC was still too high.

Shenanigans.

A friend of mine has breathalyzer tester at his house, and one night, for shiats & giggles, we all started testing ourselves with it.

After just a night of average beer drinking, everybody was in the .08 to .10 ballpark

Then just to see what would happen, I did a shot of Jack Daniels, and swished it around in my mouth for a few seconds before trying again.

And I blew a perfect .40 - which I think was the highest number it goes too. Everybody else who tried it blew a .40 too.

Absolutely. I'm a reasonably sized guy (about 180), so three beers and a motor vehicle in my instance would be demonstrably better than a '5 "2, 100lb. female with the same amount of alcohol. I'm not saying that you should drink and drive under any circumstances, but clearly some drinkers are more dangerous than others.

The home testers are often less accurate than the "official" ones, which have their own issues. However, I believe if you blow a .50 on a road-side stop you have legal right to climb onto the hood of the police car, raise your arms and shout, "I have PROOF!"

.40 isn't coma level if you're used to drinking a lot. I bought a breathalyser a while back and the first night I had it we all ran it up to around .40. Its hard to tell if we actually got there because around .30 a device with only a single button (like a breathalyser) becomes very difficult to use.

I walked home that night and fully remember everything that happened. I've definitely been drunker. It took about 20-24 hours for my BAC to fall back to 0.0 (and was farking horrible).

Its not uncommon for the drunkest guy at any given party to be around .30 I've noticed. BTW, In my experience (180 pound male), getting to .35-.40 requires drinking about 600 ml of whiskey in a relatively short time span (3-4 hours).

Lol.

I've hit the neighborhood of .4 on one of those civilian testers. I was nowhere close to dead. In fact, I was lucid enough to remember taking the test. The toxic shock the next day, however, made wish that I really was dead. I don't mean that figuratively. I actually wished that death would take me into his embrace. Christ, easily the worst hangover ever. And I've been to Tijuana. Twice.

vertiaset: Alcoholics can survive BACs which would kill a normal person. Lots of alcoholics, who had a period of sobriety, die when they start drinking again because they fall right back into the old drinking habits without the tolerance.

A cop I know says he has seen some of the highest BAC levels registered by little old ladies who seemed pretty sober except they reeked of booze. Old time alcoholics FTW

My ex-fiance scored a .40 in hospital once before she moved in with me. I'm told that she could still stand and walk, but not especially well.

She scored a .38-something in hospital whilst living with me. She made it down the stairs from our second story flat, down the gangway, through the gate, and went splat on the sidewalk. Two units of saline and a few hours' rest, she called me to pick her up.

More recently, the police got her with .352 (plus THC) after she flipped her car, crashed it into a house, and setting the house alight from the car's flames. I managed to get her two years probation, 40 hours community service, and a total of about $2K for fine, court costs and fire service reimbursement. She had a prior, but it was more than ten years ago.

What makes her scores even more impressive is that she is no small gal. It took a lot of boose to bring her BAL up that high.

It was a father (0.67 BAC) and son (0.54 BAC) who went Wyatt Earp on each other and got into a shotgun fight over a beer...son takes father's beer, father approves not, father shoots son with shotgun, father gets depressed that he just Cheney'd his son, turns shotgun on himself, misses, lands in my ER with his prize winning alcohol level.

I ran a BAC on an alcoholic back in the late 70's popped for DWI.
If anyone remembers the old S&W "dial a drunk" BAC machines,
he "looked" sober, but popped a .37
"Sober" I bet alcoholics would show some level of alcohol in their system.

brigid_fitch: .40 BAC? How is he not dead? I don't think even serious alcoholics can have a .40 and still function.

Good thing the cops opted for a blood test after that reading. Something like that would most likely have been thrown out of court.

Interesting that you still keep tabs on her

Stay Cool Babylon: Lol.

Twice.

Either that tester is off or you have one hell of a tolerance. In college, I drank 15 shots of vodka (basically the whole bottle) in a half hour. I remember absolutely nothing after drinking the first 5 shots and had to go to the ER to get my stomach pumped. My blood test BAC was 0.29.

I like to start my day with a couple of shots of Jager. For breakfast, I have a couple of beers and if there's time, eggs. Then, it's off to work. You need a lot of energy to compete in this work a day world, so I usually stop off for a smoothie. Plenty of vitamin and a couple of dollops of Jack Daniels to start the job.

I need to keep my edge, so when every one else stops for coffee, so do I. I like to Irish it up. Couple of cups and a couple of shots and I'm back to work.

Lunch? I don't get bogged down with all that food. You spend the whole afternoon just trying to process it. A nice buffet of some regional beers gives you plenty of energy. Just drop a shot of Vodak in to a couple of them.

Later, I'm in that afternoon meeting and everyone is looking down. I'm fresh and rarin' to go. A little hard cider gives me that afternoon rush.

Right after work. I head to the Gym. I mean Jim. As in Jim's bar. A couple of twelve ounce curls gives the guns a workout. Then I move on the the 24 ounce curls behind the 7/11.

In the evening, I dine like a pauper. Mad Dog 2020 or Boones farm. Then, assuming I haven't been arrested or found passed out on the cross town bus, it is a relaxing evening in front of the TV. I have a drinking game to make TV interesting: Every time there's a commercial that wants to sell me something, I take a shot of Everclear.

Of course, I end my day the same way I start it. A couple of shot a Jager and it's off to dreamland. I just hope those bugs don't eat my skin tonight. Maybe a couple of sips of cognac will keep them away.

At .40, you're probably in a coma.

You are, or I am, but a truly chronic alcoholic needs about a .25 or so just to be functional. At that level your or I would be stumbling and close to passing out; they need that much just to have steady hands and a perfectly normal demeanor. The fact that he blew this at 1 pm tells me there is a good likelihood this guy ain't a social drinker.

We had a hardcore alcoholic in my unit, blow a .52 and survive. He was in what was basically a light coma for 36 hours, and then conscious but disoriented for another 12 hours or so.

He was 34, about 5'8" and 170 lbs.

He actually passed most of the field-sobriety test, and the MPs assumed their breathalyzer was broken when he blew a .52, after trying a different machine, and testing the calibration, they rushed him to the ER, once they realized that was his legitimate BAC.

He didn't learn his lesson, though. He was back in the hospital with a .38 a week and a half later.

He found out later that he was about at a .18 to a .25 on a DAILY basis, at work.

His roommate gave us a sworn statement on his daily drinking, on a duty day:

Wake up at 0530, do a few shots of whiskey or rum, wash it down with a couple of beers, head to the morning accountability formation, then do Physical Training with the platoon. He could do a 6 or 8 mile run and come in at the front of the pack.

After PT, do a few more shots, three or so beers with breakfast. Shower up, put on his fatigues, fill up a flask with rum or whiskey. Show up to work at 0900, buy a few Cokes out of the machine, and add the booze from the flask. Finish off the flask, and he'd be weird and twitchy until lunch, as the DTs were starting to kick in.

Lunch break: Four or so shots of hard liquor, five or six beers, refill the flask.

Go back to work at 1300. Repeat the flask trick.

1700, off duty: drink an entire fifth of hard liquor, and drink an entire 24 pack or so until he passed out.

That was his DAILY routine on a work day. His weekends easily hit the high .30s to the mid .40s

Why is this guy a loser? Because he blew a .40? The guy likes booze and clearly takes care of himself - you don't get a neck like that without putting in some time at the gym. And that makes him a loser? For all we know, his wife may have left him the night before... errr, wait, that might sort of make him a loser wouldn't it. Nevermind that.

Exactly. farked up, good looking people are the best to hang out with for a night or two. Do you want to plan a wedding around their drunken ramblings? Uhh no of course not. But the immediate, "Hey that person is hot and I would not mind seeing them nekkid!" doesn't mean you are committing to a lifetime of misery. It can just be a night of fun. eh- some people can take things as they are...others, find everything much more serious than it needs to be. I don't make absolute judgment calls on people like that. If someone has a drinking problem, they should take care of it for their own good and good of their close family/friends - but hell, that drunk might be a blast to be around and I am not going to point the "loser" finger at them. It is odd but humans seem to have a variety of aspects to them - more than just the one or two aspects that are readily apparent.

There is a good reason that breath testing (to measure BAC) is not used as a diagnostic tool in a medical setting. Breath testing does not discriminate between the several alcohols that may be present in a patients breath sample. Patients in ketosis, whether the result of diabetic crisis or even some diets may well have enough ketone metabolites to produce a false reading, under certain circumstances acetone is reduced in the body to isopropanol by hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). (1)

Serum testing is specific for ethanol and is considered the gold standard for legal and medical purposes.

1. International Journal of Obesity (2007) 31, 559-561. doi:10.1038/sj.ijo.0803444

* Ketosis produces a characteristic aroma which is easily mistaken for alcohol on a patients breath.

jake_lex: I don't doubt that the guy was shiatfaced, but when I see these stories of someone blowing .40 on a breathalyzer, my feeling is more that the breathalizer farked up than them actually being that drunk.

I came here to say that.

If the blood had not been drawn, he could have beaten this one.

/not condoning drunk driving
//just sayin'

Whoa. He's hot. I'd have to let him sober up a bit so that he could perform (and consent), but then I have to punish him.

Again. And again.

/and again
/just to make sure he learns his lesson
/yeah, that's it

In my hardcore alkie days I would carry a high bac when I was sober. For at least seven or eight hours a day I would work along with a bac above .20

I tried on one occasion to sober up enough to admit myself to rehab with out detox first. I stayed sober for a full day(drunk sat, admit on monday)

It didn't work. My bac was still .05

He would have only been twice the legal limit instead of five times if the legal limit wasn't set on "pussy"

OHHHH A hot alcoholic. Sounds like every other guy I have ever dated. Tell me he is over 6ft tall and I will probably be dating him before I know it.

/stop comparing him to all these uglier people. He is way hotter than any of the "comparison" photos.

Maybe he just wanted gay sex again, and thought he had to go back to jail to get it.

Well, you see, we have some pretty harsh drunk driving laws out here, so everyone feels obligated to practice hard and test the system.

Maybe someone's already pointed this out, but the guy looks completely sober. He must have 0% body fat and weigh about 500 pounds.

Checks pic...If you can get it all on tape and wear something slutty, I'm pretty sure I can sell the video for at least $25,000. Proly more with professional lighting and a homerun.

Diogenes: He's kinda hot. Probably easy to take advantage of now, too.

Yeah, he is kind of hot, but who wants to take "advantage" of a drunk? Waste of time and energy.

Pvt Joker: Stay Cool Babylon: Lol.

Twice.

Either that tester is off or you have one hell of a tolerance. In college, I drank 15 shots of vodka (basically the whole bottle) in a half hour. I remember absolutely nothing after drinking the first 5 shots and had to go to the ER to get my stomach pumped. My blood test BAC was 0.29.

drinking fast always will make you feel like crap or need your stomach pumped. Its drinking slow and steady that allows you to reach high BACs.

Two storys:

- A friend of mine invented the Green Dragon drink. Its double shots of six different spirits in a pint glass topped up with orange juice. Illegal to sell in a bar as its too much alcohol content. The story of its invention is tl;dr so I'll skip it.

Since then they have been mixing it themselves and on one occasion one of the group has had 6 pints over about 6 hours and still been standing.

- at a Sci Fi con a named guest (he was in Earth Final Conflict) drowned about three half pints of Green Dragon over the space of an hour and each time literally emptied the glass in one go. About two hours later he was rushed to hospital to have his stomach pumped. For some reason he wont attend another Sci Fi con now... (On the same evening at least 5 non-regular drinkers had about the same amount but spaced over 3 hours or so and were fine except the hangovers the next morning).

/yeah tl;dr

Get a room

Kids these days...

.40 drunk sex is better out in public... especially in a graveyard or elementary school playground. Rooms are for "tipsy" folks...

Hey, wherever is fine! Just let me know!

I'm thinking he was just hitting something hard while driving (and drunk to, but that's a given). Playing around with a friend of mine's home breathalizer, if you had just taken a shot the machine reads an uber high number.

Wow, I'm so suprised how many uninformed farkers there are regarding alcohol. I thought you were supposed to be the big drinkers here on the net.

.4 is not even that high really... if you drink hard alcohol all day, every day, for a couple weeks- you can get that high pretty easy.
I hit a stage where the withdraw almost killed me, not the high BAC.
I'd tell you what was blowing, but nobody here would believe it. go hang out at detox for a while and you'll see this a lot.

FROM AZ! After one of my binges I was hung over for about three days. 7 days of drinking hard. I could not eat or drink for two days. On day three I could barley keep anything down. Night sweats, the shakes, and my breath smelt like alcohol for days. I am sure I was over a .40. Two weeks ago I spilt a 30 pack of Budweiser with my roommate after work. about 5pm. We went to the bar threw down several pitchers of Amberboch. Then we went to the Mill Cue club and had several large long islands. I blacked out and woke up in my bed the next morning. I called into work and said I was going to be late and showed up at nine instead of 7:30.
I was a little tipsy but I had a bottle of vodka in my desk drawer. Sipped on that until I went home. Sure I kinda of smell like alcohol but i am fine and everyone knows I have a drinking habit.

You are the one who is uninformed, my friend. 0.4% blood alcohol concentration is widely considered the median lethal dose. That means half of those who reach this level of intoxication will die from alcohol poisoning.
