I wrote a mail filter for my server to deal with forwards. It checked the subject to see if there was more than one "fwd: " and bounced it with the message "Please don't forward crap." My mom was less than pleased when she received her first bounce message. I didn't tell her I wrote the filter just for her.

I often go by consumer opinions posted online, simply because they're often the only source of information. Go buy an appliance, search the model number... if you're lucky, you'll be able to pay Consumer Reports for the opinion they gathered after four hours of exhaustive testing and reading the company PR. Or you can just read the opinion of somebody who actually owns the damned thing.

The problem, of course, is that "somebody" may not exist.

Thankfully, my mother has a friend who does that incessantly so she's learned to LOATHE it and thus doesn't pass them around herself. She especially hates those bullshiat "inspirational stories" and anything that makes her scroll through unnecessary ASCII art while telling her to make a wish.

And in college I trained her on a site that debunks virus hoaxes so she could send the info back to idiots who pass the hoax around.

The general rule of thumb is that everything that makes Obama or Democrats look bad is true, and everything that makes Obama or Democrats look good is false.

Because my Mom was born before Color TV and still only has a basic understanding of how to use The Internet, even though she's had a computer in her house since 1994.

She still learns the hard way that the Internet is full of scams and assorted BS. We've all learned through experience how to automatically recognize Spam and garbage on sight, but for some reason my Mom still can't do that.

We finally made a compromise. I told momma brap she could keep sending me the things she found humorous or interesting as long as said e-mail

a) DID NOT Contain text that insists that the e-mail be forwarded to multiple people
b) DID NOT Involve a quiz that wasn't intended to test or press one's actual intellegence (i.e. do your friends REALLY know you? e-mails.)
c) DID NOT Involve a warning about anything, urgent or non.
d) DID NOT devolve devolve into an explicit description of her attraction to Tom Selleck and "what she would do to him" given the chance.

We get along much better now. Although I feel prudish about d) and may lift the ban as she's been pretty good about following the other rules of our detente.

Ya before I buy I usually look at what people have to say about the product.

I make 4 assumptions.

-People who are gaga fan boys will praise it regardless.

-The company may be posting fake reviews.

-People who are upset or disappointed will post the most due to them feeling shafted.

-People who are satisfied are the least likely to post as they just aren't motivated enough to go online and say "yep it does it's job".

So I mostly look at the bad posts and see what their complaints are. See how many freak accidents there are, how many are the purchasers fault, how many are the companies.

If most of the complaints are due to purchaser stupidity then I will assume it is a good product

The forwards I get from my mom are mostly about god and/or conservative drivel about "them durn illegals".

I get it, mom. You're crazy and you hate brown people. Gotcha.

Yes, I'm aware that you think the 1950s was a halcyon era and lament that things aren't still exactly like they were then. Of course god made the light shine through the american flag in the shape of a cross. That's obviously substantiating evidence that god exists, and doesn't have anything to do with the way light diffuses through that type of woven fabric.

Yes, yes, Obama is clearly a muslim terrorist and now that he's been elected, the sky will literally fall any day now.

Love you too, mom. Sigh.

We all know Nielsen surveys are accurate. I had several stoner friends that worked for them until they finally got busted for making up surveys at home all day long while playing xbox.

They'd call me up and say "ok your a 46 year old father of 3 and you just watched 2 movie trailers at the Edwards Theatre and took the survey." That was their cover in case a fact checker was following up.
