The technology is there (or very near), just not likely affordable as a consumer item (item).

Wait, so I can now brag about having something that's 1" thick? Woohoo! I'm finally going to be desirable.

I almost bought a Samsung LED TV a couple of months ago. 1.25" thick. It looked very nice, but I just couldn't justify the price difference with a LCD.

vudukungfu 2009-07-06 03:47:04 PM
The huge, bulky, heavy TV in my house is only for DVDs, no signal for TV. The reason is my traditional natvie dwelling is in the middle of nowhere, and I don't want it too easily stolen.

No way to go smaller without fractions or the metric system, so this is it for the US market.

mrmaster 2009-07-06 03:48:37 PM
Forget the thickness. The savings in energy costs are excellent. Assuming they drop in price soon. :(

Agreed. I picked up a Samsung Series 8 LCD when they closed them out for the new LED screens. Couldn't beat the price even when the LEDs were already available.

Heck no. These are tantamount to the plasma TV hype.

I'll wait for decent OLED TVs to come out, instead.

stevarooni 2009-07-06 03:56:43 PM
Uses less energy is a bigger reason to get one of the (for now) ultra-thin LCDs. Not at the prices they're charging, naturally, but...yeah, I'll wait for the wallpaper-thin LCDs before upgrading from my current set.

Sadly, LED tvs are LCD tvs. When DLP started to use LED technology, the name did not change. Nice tech improvement, but not the fundemental jump that demands the over priced tvs. I guess you need to pay for the marketing.

As for the Samsung series nine models, go for the 930's not the 950's. Less reflective screen will help in standard living rooms, while the 950 and 960 models are best in pitch black theater rooms.

Personally the biggest reason for me would be that with LED backlights, there's regional backlight control. i.e., black areas of the screen don't even have the lighting turned on behind it. No more greys instead of blacks. (Although the samsung LN**A630 and up series already had pretty amazing blacks...)

Oled devices are a biot different.

The individual pixels are organic light emitting diodes that do not need a back light to be visible, this allows for a thinner design that uses less energy. Also the designs can be printed onto a flexible substrate allowing for movable foldable adaptable screens. combined with other advances like memory materials you can create a computer that you can fold like a scroll or wallet and carry with you with great ease, also the reduced energy cost allows for greater battery life or smaller batteries.

The high costs we see now are because it is new tech but the prices will drop significantly soon.

( I look forward to the day when you can get a display screen implanted. Programmable tattoos FTW. )

I did find that when I compared the 630 and 650 the matte finish of the 630 seemed to cause a slight loss of sharpness. May have just been imagining things though.

Hahaha, I had a 36" Sony Wega (so I'm getting a kick...).

Gave it away on Craigslist when we got the new one (42" LCD). Didn't figure anyone would actually pay money for that big, heavy, non-HD sonofabiatch.

It was awesome for a CRT, but it was still a CRT. 350lb of glorious SD picture.

Actually, these one inch thick Samsung 2009 models are "edge-lit"; they have LED's along an edge (or multiple edges?) and a diffuser to give even lighting across the whole screen. That is why they're considerably thinner than last year's 9 series LED-backlit LCD's, but it also means that they can't do any sort of local dimming like the 9 series did.

The only problem with a 4" thick tv is that by the time you hang it its like 6 " out from the wall and there are cords everywhere and if you have cable then there are more cords running from dvr to tv and back to outlet and then to dvd.....nightmareish.

A 1" thick tv sounds great, but its still going to be 3" out from the wall and have six cords.

Hows about you sell me a 1" thick dvd, dvr, cable tuner, all with no cords exposed that I can hang on the wall under the tv.....

Then let me mount everything with double sided foam tape.

Next time I redo our bedroom, which will be in the next house, biatch spent a fortune on this one....I am going to build a faux wall and flush mount the damn tv into it. Then I can hide the wires inside the faux wall, and mount the accessories thru little slots in the wall....

The only problem I can foresee is that we own historic homes and we always wind up mounting the TV above the mantle....which is in front of a 24" thick brick chimney. But hey, I like challenges.

I loved that damn TV. 260 pounds of pure unadulterated pleasure....

Until you went to move the damn thing. Once I got it into the van I said fark it and put it on Craigslist. It sat in the van for two days until I sold it, delivered it and went out and bought a new plasma, which sucks energy and emits a soothing warmth that an LCD just cannot provide

I went with some DW Laminate for my projector screen, but I still have to get the trim put on. I like the quality, but one giant sheet of laminate (110" diagonal) mounted on a pegboard backing is a pain to work on in my apartment. Wish I had done a simple screen stretched over a frame.

What'd you go with?

Flat Wires are starting to look pretty biatchin (new window)

Currently I just run all of my speaker wires and satellite wires through the floor. I can alway fill in the drill holes if I need to.

Hear, hear...but it was only (ONLY) 268 pounds, but it easily felt like 350 cuz it was awkward as all hell

Great friggin' picture, though. Was yours HD??? Mine was and the HD picture was better than my friends' DLPs and LCDs at the time because those TVs just don't get those nice blacks. The problem was once the picture was shrunk down vertically it was like a 28-30" widescreen, which is pretty damn tiny

I got some dude to pay 200 for it, though. Says he doesn't "trust" thin, flat panels yet because they seem too "chincy" (sp?) but he wanted a way to hook up a Blu Ray player he got for Christmas from his kids and he just needed something with HDMI

he also had a pristine mid 70's Lincoln in the driveway...probably doesn't "trust" those cheap uni-body cars, either

/damn right I stayed off his lawn
