Well at least Sacha Baron Cohen thinks Sacha Baron Cohen is funny.

Better than all 10 they picked. Would it really be that hard to pick real people who are still alive?

A very meh list.

How about we get "Bruno" to interview "Borat" as he's getting ready to interview "Ali G."? The comedic permutations are ENDLESS!

Uzzah 2009-07-06 03:28:49 PM
I only saw the first one (don't usually have patience for slideshows): Ann Coulter. Which means the entire premise for the article is wrong. The premise of the Borat/Bruno schtick is to provoke people into dropping their social defenses and exposing the true personality beneath -- which in most cases is ugly or intolerant.

Ann Coulter's schtick, on the other hand, is putting the ugliness and intolerance on the outside. (If anything, she's a right-wing, political version of the same Borat/Burno gag, trolling liberals into exposing their own intolerance.) Getting her to drop her "character" and reveal her true self might be interesting to those who don't realize that her public persona is an act (she's known to be a huge Deadhead, among other things), but it's not going to be the same kind of "nice person on the outside, ugly person on the inside" shock that is the Borat/Bruno gig's stock in trade.

He can be funny in short doses, but like everything that comes out of Hollywood, they must saturate you with it until all but the die-hard fans are annoyed, hoping to get $10 from you somewhere along the way.

I mean, I thought Austin Powers 1 was funny, but by the 3rd I wanted Mike Myers to die in a train derailment.

SBC uses deception, lies and mockery at the expense of other people to make what he call humor.

Don Rickles used insults as a tool to create laughs.

Cohen is just an insulting tool.

I did not like Borat and found it rather tasteless. Now I know that is the idea, but unfunny is still unfunny. The only thing worse then a movie being unfunny is an endless sea of morans quoting said unfunny movie. I am sure we will get more of this with Bruno.

I just want to see somebody (anybody) haul off and punch the shiat out of him - just once.

I really don't get the "act like a douchebag in front of somebody who was taking you seriously and watch them squirm trying to remain polite" act - is the joke supposed to be that the other person is funny while they're squirming? Are we making fun of the "serious" person who doesn't get the joke?

It reminds me of the kid who says "Guess what?" and when you say "What?" he says "That's what!" and laughs at you because you didn't "get" the joke.

Point is, he's so over the top that any sane person should know that it's a joke. There were a couple people who figured out Ali G was a joke and went right along with it. Granted Ali G was about something different than Borat or Bruno, but point stands, not getting that it's joke says something about the people involved. And there are some, who do get the joke.

You and me both. I don't see the point in humor where the cornerstone of the joke is that one of the two parties is being set up as a fool by a stranger; at least practical jokes have the reservoir of friendship to draw from and smooth it over. Where Cohen is involved, there's none of that- he's just setting out to be a douche to people who were minding their own business. So what if they have a darker, less funny side to their personality that comes out when being exposed to concentrated assholism? Everybody does.

For some reason I get the feeling he goes out of his way to find people who won't get the joke. I've not seen much of his stuff outside previews and clips, so maybe there's folks who very much get the joke involved and they just aren't used for publicity. What I've seen of it doesn't make me interested in seeing any more because of the seeming intentional humiliation of his victims.

They also bumbled the Churchill entry. I assume they were trying to imply he said "We have nothing to fear but fear itself," but of course that was FDR about the Depression, not Churchill about any damn thing.

JohnBigBootay 2009-07-06 04:06:43 PM

No, that's not the point. Ruining other people's days to get laughs is not a point, it's a pure lack of the civility he thinks he's mocking in others.

Seriously, most of know this guy. He's the jack-a who walks up to you and your gf and exposes himself then giggles and farts cus he thinks he's pushing social boundaries and making the world a freer, happier place.

These are the same people who put crap in a jar and call it art, they're all ridiculous, and they think it's amazing that they're so much 'not like everyone else'.

Ali G, Borat, and Bruno - if they ever had a point, it was completely wasted in the tactless manner they attempt to express it. Sure, pooping in a jar might make a statement about how badly we've trashed the earth, but it doesn't make people care.

And putting someone in a ridiculously awkward position to try and force some sort of personal revelation is like handing them that jar of crap, as soon as they can throw it away and wash their hands, they will.

It always strikes me as amusing to find people who think Cohen is doing anything that hasn't been done before. Granted you go back past the recent past and it was being done in print, not on TV or in movies, but it's not like his shtick is anything new. Particularly among the English.

olapbill: how about anyone that would punch him in the face?

Churchill would have had another drink and ignored him. Cheney would probably bark really hard at him but sit down in the end. Butkus is too old to bother. The rest of that list is a bad joke.

I know who would have kicked his ass: John Wayne.

Or the obvious one: Chuck Norris.

I caught part of a Bruno clip somewhere recently... it very obnoxious and not funny. This shtick reminds me of a video clip a friend sent me not too long ago of a Japanese guy who goes around the streets - it's apparently part of a very popular show in Japan - and does the shock thing, prancing the streets in skimpy, tight, steel-studded leather. He cavorts in noodle shops to help improve business. And he does antics on playgrounds with children. Very, very bizarre... but all been done before.

I'm no prude, but there comes a point where it's just not funny after the first two times it's been done. What Cohen is doing with Bruno has been done a zillion times and now the horse has been beaten to a pulp. Zzzzzzzzzzzz...

poot_rootbeer 2009-07-06 05:00:01 PM
I was surprised to learn that the Bruno movie doesn't even open in theaters until this coming Friday. Based on the advertising blitz for it so far, I had assumed that it had already been out long enough for people like me to get sick of it.

JohnBigBootay 2009-07-06 05:06:46 PM
raptusregaliter: I know who would have kicked his ass: John Wayne.

Yeah right. The Duke would have signed up for a movie of him kicking his ass, but when it comes time for real-life ass-kicking he'd have gladly let someone else do the ass-kicking for him. You know, like he did in real life.

No, I've met them too. The sort that make the crassest of jokes in the most inappropriate settings (sometimes things that would be classified under "sexual assault" in the criminal code) and then step back and say "Hey, bro, I was only playin', why you gotta be like that?" when their antics draw the deserved response. Cohen may not be quite that bad, but it still isn't amusing to most people over the age of 15.

I get sick of this guy's characters long before the associated movie comes out. It doesn't help that the media gives him free publicity by pretending the character is a real person in the lead up to the movie release. I will be happy when this goes away.

Ah the usual "I never liked that" responses that come long after the heyday of something or someone wildly popular.

Each subsequent SBC character gets worse, but c'mon Ali G was hilarious. You're not supposed to think "oh that poor racist douchebag minding his own business got exposed, what an unfunny meanie that SBC is!". You're supposed to say "holy shiat that's hilarious what a racist douchebag that guy is" and not farking put on your sociologist cap and overanalyze the hell out of it or imagine SBC is in your living room doing that same shiat to you.

The comedy for me isn't him wearing ridiculous shiat or whatever, that's just in there to disarm people. The comedy comes from supposedly serious situations where he says something completely insane or provocative. The correct response, namely a deadpan "that's completely insane" or "get the hell out of here you asshat" wouldn't be funny. The humor comes from the types of people who fall for the provocation. I laugh at them, not SBC. He just gives them the opportunity to embarrass themselves.

Except for Churchill a bunch of has-has been celebs, a cartoon character and two conversatives.

Let's see, how 'bout, say Olbermann? Now that would be a hoot. SBC could ask him about his size 48 ass and why he treats women so lousey.

Or Chris Mathews; he could ask about that tingling sensation Chris gets when he looks at mulatto men.

Or Carville about his facial resemblance to Satan.

Or Maureen Dowd about her plagerism and squeaky voice

Or Biden and why he thinks 'Jobs' is a three letter word

Or Maddoes and why she looks like a guy...

I'll never see the movie, so I don't know if it made it in, but I saw a clip where "Bruno" had a handful of New Jersey Guidos acting like jagoffs for a fake Spring Break video. Kept telling them to do it again, more excitement and more over the top, even though the douchebag were just about giving themselves anyeurisms yelling and acting, well, like douchebag Guidos. Then, at the end of the clip, "Bruno" says to one of them "so, how is it to be on Austrian Gay TV?" or something like that and the guy's horrified reaction made me laugh so hard I almost needed oxygen.

I just read all the comments here, and I can guarantee that at least 50% of you people saying you're above that crude / exploitative humor secretly watch his movies and enjoy them.

It's so trendy to hate on SBC, it has even infected fark.

On a forum where it is standard behavior to mock, deride, troll, etc., I am amazed by the amount of people claiming they are superior and above that sort of behavior.

The guy farks with people. Often times it's terribly juvenile and pitiful. Sometimes though, he strikes a cord and really finds a good target that reveals a lot about society and the person involved.

I know, I talk like a fag and my shiat's all farked up.

The correct response, namely a deadpan "that's completely insane" or "get the hell out of here you asshat" wouldn't be funny. The humor comes from the types of people who fall for the provocation. I laugh at them, not SBC. He just gives them the opportunity to embarrass themselves.

And then there's those of us who just don't give a damn about his style of humor. If he entertains other people, good for him. I wish him luck. I just won't be spending my money or time to watch him.

Who cares? Does "BRUNO" realize that his "movie" bombed??

No, I guess not, so we'll just have to live with his drivel being shoved into our faces OVER and OVER because a few dregs of society find it amusing.

Tell ya what, Bruno, you give me a call, come on over to the house, bring your cameras, and we'll show you what most of America thinks of your sorry-ass, pathetic "theater."

Freaking loser.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: Thank Jebus. I was beginning to think I was weird or something. I never thought this guy was funny. I just found him insulting and stupid. My 19 yr old insists it the funniest shiat since ever. Gonna smack that boy upside the head......

Different strokes. I'm sure your parents thought the Beatles were Satan's music.

I find it funny, in fact I rewatched Borat last night. I really don't give a fark you don't find it funny, but apparently it holds your attention enough to distract you from things you do like, or beat your kids.

No different than the fundies that wanted to outlaw dancing and music. Because other people LIKED it and had FUN.

Really - pathetic, old man, I'd hate to be you. It's a sad existence to go around hating everything else.

/And Star Trek is gay, but I'm not gonna slap you over it.

His movie also hasn't come out yet...?

I nominate R. Lee Ermey to 'chat' with the obnoxious Mr. Cohen.

I think he's hilarious, I just think he's a hypocritical pussy for cutting the LaToya Jackson scene in Bruno.

It'll probably be on the DVD. I'm honestly just seeing it for the Ron Paul scene.

The Bruno material on the Ali G show was a LOT more vicious (any time he went after the fashion industry was comedy gold) than Borat. Should make an awesome movie. What isn't funny about stupid people being to made to look stupid? It's not like Cohen put a farking gun to head of the racist rodeo director in Borat or the douchebag frat boys.

Cohen's work might not be everyone's taste, but he's damn good at what he does. I'm only really worried if the movie is heavy staged at times, but I'm reserving judgment until I see it.

/guy makes a living trolling IRL....how can you not love him?

I wish he would do comedy without being so mean sometimes. He is a very talented guy.

What's the fun in that?

I like Sasha Baron Cohen. The man has balls of steal.

Um, SBC tea-bagging Eminem is plenty enough for me. I'll be in my bunk.

Seeing the king of the Paultards getting "seduced" by Bruno is still highly anticipated, yes.

"The Duke would have signed up for a movie of him kicking his ass, but when it comes time for real-life ass-kicking he'd have gladly let someone else do the ass-kicking for him."

That's ok, let's introduce Bruno to Rowdy Roddy Piper instead.
Oh and be sure to give him a coconut too.

DoWhatNowToWhat: Diogenes: ricewater_stool: DNRTFA. But Sarah Palin would be #1 on my list.

Better than all 10 they picked. Would it really be that hard to pick real people who are still alive?

A very meh list.

You got my hopes up when I saw Dick Cheney...

/leaving disappointed

Yeah, but Cheney would just shoot him.

I think Bruno interviewing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would be extremely entertaining.

I preferred the old school Ali G stuff but it's still funny. I guess most of the people busting on him in this thread don't really have a sense of humour.

Bruno's problem is that he is trying to be more outrageous and flamboyant than a real flaming homosexual. That's a pretty difficult feat and he fails at it. In fact, watching Bruno you almost get the idea he is making fun of gays. This is the 21st century. Does anyone think gay mannerisms or dress is funny anymore? Apparently Sacha Baron Cohen does.

Who wished? I didn't. I don't understand how someone so unfunny has this kind of following.
