love the pythons, but cleese is a colossal, epic dickhead.

As much as I wanted to erupt in outrage, the truth is that Cleese has become a sad caricature of himself. He stopped being relevant sometime around "Dangerous Creatures".

He has Steve Martin's Disease, a crippling condition that affects comedians in their prime. They become swollen and bloated with self-importance, crippling their ability to take criticism and robbing them of all their fun. Now John Cleese, and dozens of other formerly healthy, amusing people, may never be funny ever again.

Dr. Rosenrosen 2009-07-06 11:11:09 AM
Is it not possible that Cleese has other projects going on and simply cannot rehearse and act in the live performances? Scheduling is complicated and live performances are a big chunk of time. The fact that he is involved in the documentary suggests that this is not a "I'm better than you" motivation.

It's both shocking and saddening that Steve Martin has become such a pompous prick in his later years. He always seemed like a guy who would stay pretty grounded.

Why all the Cleese hate? Hell, if any comedian still alive deserved to revel in their own awesomeness, Cleese is one of them. He's earned his place amongst the pompous.

I wonder if they're going to bring out the routine from their last reunion and have an urn of "ashes" with Graham's picture over it.

What is it with Eric Idle? All the other Pythons moved on to other, successful careers. He tried one project - Rutland Weekend TV - and has been flogging the dead horse of the Pythons ever since.
I loved Python, but the original series does not need adding to. Cleese has the right idea.

Seems like funny people end up catching this or John Belushi disease, where they do coke and booze and act all crazy and wild and eventually their body just shuts down on them.

I'm trying to think of exceptions to the rule(s), and all I can come up with is Bob Newhart (but he never really became a film star).

I refer to Monty Python as the American comedy troope with a bunch of British people in it. I don't care if there is only one American who renounced his citizenship in it. I'm stealing it from the limeys.

So, what about someone like Robin Williams who suffers from both syndromes?

Considering how much money he makes from doing that I don't blame him, or think it any worse than an author still getting royalties from a book he wrote thirty years ago.

/one week of royalties from Spamalot would probably set up the majority of us for life

I can't be the only one who didn't particularly care for Spamalot. I actually did like the new musical bits in and of themselves, but to me, the humor of Monty Python and the Holy Grail just doesn't go with the jazzy "wah-wah-wahhhhh" kind of stuff that's in the musical. For example, turning the "I'm not dead yet" scene, with its complete and utter deadpan humor into an upbeat song and dance devoid of irony was truly sad.

So, I don't think I'll like this one, either.

Eric Idle must be out of cash.

Yeah, making an incredible movie is the ultimate marquee-comedian dick move. It's always in inverse proportion to their lifetime quota of crapulence, too. Fark you, Adam Sandler, fark you right up the ass with the Palme d'Or you probably deservedly won for Punch-Drunk Love!

I live in fear of the inevitable Rob Schneider arthouse flick, which by that formula will be so good I'll probably have to blind myself because nothing will ever be that beautiful again.

/fun fact: Fark's spellcheck doesn't like the word "fark" but knows all about "crapulence."

I do to. I think Williams is brilliant when he can shut the hell up. But I can't stand any interview or comedy bit from him - its the same shiat every time for the last 20 years.

/cleese has earned being an ass at this stage
