As much as I wanted to erupt in outrage, the truth is that Cleese has become a sad caricature of himself. He stopped being relevant sometime around "Dangerous Creatures".

He has Steve Martin's Disease, a crippling condition that affects comedians in their prime. They become swollen and bloated with self-importance, crippling their ability to take criticism and robbing them of all their fun. Now John Cleese, and dozens of other formerly healthy, amusing people, may never be funny ever again.

Is it not possible that Cleese has other projects going on and simply cannot rehearse and act in the live performances? Scheduling is complicated and live performances are a big chunk of time. The fact that he is involved in the documentary suggests that this is not a "I'm better than you" motivation.

It's both shocking and saddening that Steve Martin has become such a pompous prick in his later years. He always seemed like a guy who would stay pretty grounded.

Considering how much money he makes from doing that I don't blame him, or think it any worse than an author still getting royalties from a book he wrote thirty years ago.

I can't be the only one who didn't particularly care for Spamalot. I actually did like the new musical bits in and of themselves, but to me, the humor of Monty Python and the Holy Grail just doesn't go with the jazzy "wah-wah-wahhhhh" kind of stuff that's in the musical. For example, turning the "I'm not dead yet" scene, with its complete and utter deadpan humor into an upbeat song and dance devoid of irony was truly sad.

So, I don't think I'll like this one, either.

Eric Idle must be out of cash.

Yeah, making an incredible movie is the ultimate marquee-comedian dick move. It's always in inverse proportion to their lifetime quota of crapulence, too. Fark you, Adam Sandler, fark you right up the ass with the Palme d'Or you probably deservedly won for Punch-Drunk Love!

I live in fear of the inevitable Rob Schneider arthouse flick, which by that formula will be so good I'll probably have to blind myself because nothing will ever be that beautiful again.

I have to agree - we saw Idle perform at Carnegie Hall in the late 90's - the show was called something like "the last cash grab" or something - Idle loves those sorts of titles. It was sad. The low point being turning "the nudge nudge wink wink" sketch into a rap song.

There was one very pleasant section where he told the story about Eric The Half A Bee before singing the song, but other than that it was very shrill.

A few things:

1. Cleese actively participated in Spamalot providing the voice of God, whereas the others just showed up on stage for the premiere and then griped about it (as is their right) in the press later on. And if there are any Pythons he didn't get along so well with, it'd be Eric anyway, so it seems like some scheduling/personal thing rather than animosity.

Cleese had some sort of odd video podcast, with him teaching film students how to read scripts, and all sorts of odd garbage that bored me to death.

I'll put him and his ex-wife on a pedestal for a few brilliant episodes of Fawlty Towers, but he mostly lost the funny many years ago.

Note, I said 'mostly': He did some sort of Python Reunion show that was on PBS a number of years ago now... just a history of the Python's, including an interview with him at his house, with a hot woman in a swimming pool. Very tongue in cheek, and hilarious stuff.

I think there was also a 'anonymous' black screen interview with Eric's 'mother' who curiously sounded a lot like Eric, then the lights came on, and there was a naked girl sitting on a chair. I miss riveting interviews like that on TV.

I'll sit on your face and tell you I love you, too
I love to hear you oralize
When I'm between your thighs
You blow me away

Sit on my face and let my lips embrace you
I'll sit on your face and then I'll love you truly
Life can be fine if we both sixty-nine
If we sit on our faces in all sorts of places
And play, 'til we're blown away

THIS THIS THIS

How sweet to be an Idiot,
As harmless as a cloud,
Too small to hide the sun
Almost poking fun,
At the warm but insecure untidy crowd.
How sweet to be an idiot,
And dip my brain in joy,
Children laughing at my back,
With no fear of attack,
As much retaliation as a toy.

How sweet to be an idiot, how sweet.

I tiptoed down the street,
Smiled at everyone I meet,
But suddently a scream,
Smashes through my dream,
Fie fye foe fum,
I smell the blood of an asylum,
(Blood of an asylum,
But mother I play so beautifully,
listen. ha ha)
Fie fye foe fum,
I smell the blood of the asylum,
Hey you, you're such a pennant,
You got as much brain as a dead ant,
As much inagination as a carvan sign.

But I still love you, still love you,
Oooh how sweet to be an idiot,
How sweet. how sweet. How sweet.

am i missing a reference?

He has Steve Martin's Disease, a crippling condition that affects comedians in their prime. They become swollen and bloated with self-importance, crippling their ability to take criticism and robbing them of all their fun. Now John Cleese, and dozens of other formerly healthy, amusing people, may never be funny ever again.
