What about Jon Stewart? What's he doing these days?

the_rev [TotalFark] 2009-07-06 09:19:11 AM
Wait a minute. Back. The fcuck. Up.

Any discussion of MTV VJs that leaves out Martha Quinn fails miserably. I clicked through all 18 of those to see her. My disappointment is palpable.

dillenger69 [TotalFark] 2009-07-06 09:23:31 AM
No Kurt Loder either. I haven't watched MTV in a good 20 years. I wouldn't think he's still there.

Wrong_Intentions 2009-07-06 09:29:18 AM
If Kennedy's not in my bed, then sh'es really wasted her post-MTV life.

Demetrius [TotalFark] 2009-07-06 09:32:46 AM
Wait. You mean MTV used to show music videos??

This. No Martha, and yeah JJ may be dead but at least give the man his props. And about half that list weren't really VJs, they were newsreaders and TRL hosts. There's a difference.

LessO2 2009-07-06 09:33:45 AM
No Martha Quinn? No JJ Jackson (at least a mention, since he's dead), no Kurt Loder?

Fail.

Loder, as well a good portion of the people on this list, were never VJ's,
just talking-head hosts.

My personal fave:

FAIL

No Kennedy, no Dave Kendle, no Downtown Julie Brown. Did EW bother to do some research first? Half the list was chumps that hosted up to 2007.

Red Means Go 2009-07-06 09:36:14 AM
Uh, apparently MySpace has a record label?

geekluv [TotalFark] 2009-07-06 09:38:23 AM
WTF???? What happened to all the great VJ's in the 90's like the one that went on to do the Who's Tommy on Broadway??? I thought that guy was hot. This list sux monkey balls...

Ah yes. The former Charlie girl that had her tits lopped off at 20-something because of cancer. Thank god she still has those pouty lips...

I am starting to think it was a bunch of college interns who came up with this. That in which is pissing me off. How could they leave out Adam Curry?

JammerJim 2009-07-06 09:43:34 AM
I used to watch MTV just to catch glimpses of Martha Quinn. She defined hot/cute in the day.

Yes, I was an undersexed high school sophomore at the time, why do you ask?

I tried to look up Kennedy but all my Google searches pointed to some dude who got himself shot.

TrainingWheelsNeeded 2009-07-06 09:45:49 AM
Didn't want top flip through the list, was Serena Altschul(sp) on there? I guess she was more of a news girl than VJ but good god did I get some furious masturbating done to her 30 second spots.

Not about to click the article, but judging from the missing names supplied by this thread, who the hell did they have in?

A bunch of Vj's from 2000 to 2007... This list had a lot of suck in it.

tjkac 2009-07-06 09:50:08 AM
Kurt Loder is still on MTV. I happened to come across him giving information about Michael Jackson's death when I was flipping channels the other day.

Also, what ever happened to the homeless guy that won a VJ role or something like that? I do not remember his name, but I seem to recall he was homeless and won a contest that made him a VJ.

I just remember the look on Dave's face when he lost to Jesse. It was like "Really? That's what you want? WTF?"

What happened to Idalis? My guess: porn.

Riki Rachtman has always been a tool. I remember he used to whine on camera when he got hate mail because headbanger's ball started playing crappy videos. He also said that "Faster Pussycat would dominate the 80's rock scene." Basically he hasn't changed at all, except now he looks like Eddie Munster.

naturalselection: I clicked through looking for Jesse Camp. Left disappointed.

From Wikipedia:

Camp held his position as an occasional TRL host for one year. When he left the series, Thalia DaCosta won the contest to replace him, who in turn was a VJ on the network for about a year. Upon leaving Camp attempted to parlay his MTV fame into a rock career under the name Jesse & the 8th Street Kidz on the Hollywood label. In late 2006, he was reportedly working at a Los Angeles-area pet supply store called Centinela Feed & Supply. In 2008 he began working for a non-profit organization called "Telefund" as a caller, raising money for non-profit liberal and progressive organizations.

So he basically went to retail and then telemarketing. Possibly because no job in their right mind would hire a goofy Salvation Army reject except if he was shoved in a cubicle for the rest of his life.

Doesn't he do a syndicated music show that focuses strictly on NASCAR? I think it's like Dee Snider's House of Hair, only much more pathetic.

/plus Dee at least can write popular songs and make money
//and pretend to be somewhat sane

When I see Dave now I am in total awe of him & somehow have the urge to fap to him. The guy that he lost to I would never fap to ever. He just gives me the creeps.

1980's
MTV = MUSICAL TELEVISED VIDEOS

2009
MTV = MUSICAL TELEVISED VIDEOS UNWATCHABLE CRAP

So, shouldn't this be called the "TUC" channel now?

FritztheCat 2009-07-06 10:12:17 AM
Was anyone really curious about where they could find Pauly Shore?

Mr. Freezey 2009-07-06 10:13:55 AM
Well Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter and Nina Blackwood have brought their MTV 80's play lists (read: No artists of color needed) to Sirius/XM. One of the many reasons I canceled my XM subscription.

XM radio was a fantastic service with a diverse selection of music and talk that was turned into a low quality ripoff. They tried to charge me a $2.00 a month invoice fee to convince me to give them a credit card number. I had prepaid for the quarter, demanded and received a refund. Invoice fee LOLZ.

"Where are they now" lists should not have people with "- present" in their chronology.

Did she die or what?

Hagbard Celine Dion 2009-07-06 10:33:27 AM
Reading through that, it struck me how long it's been since I watched EmptyVee. I maybe recognized half of that list, all from the dim dark days of the past, before TRL.

Getting old used to be painless.

clownyclownzomby 2009-07-06 10:34:28 AM
Why didn't they mention (in Nina Blackwood's update) that she was violently beaten by a pimp named Ramrod in Vice Squad? I mean, I would certainly put that item in my current resume.

I'm genuinely surprised that Jesse Camp didn't OD and die in a gutter somewhere.

Duff and Daisy Fuentes are on my "if I was straight" list.

Also, anyone that didn't actually host a show that played music videos isn't really a VJ.

That'll teach them for bowing to Sony Music and pushing that "king of pop" astroturf meme for Michael Jackson in 1991. Them and Bart Simpson. Corporate whores and sell-outs.

Yeah, totally. I watched a ton of MTV in the mid-80s and never even heard of this Michael Jackson character until last week!

What about Jenny McCarthy and Chris Hardwick? Jenny's about the most famous (for absolutely nothing) person who ever worked at MTV. Serena Altschul is a reporter for CBS now. I think EW wanted to make sure they didn't include too many productive members of society in this list. Still doesn't explain the exclusion of Jesse, though. This list should be bookended with him and Pauly Shore.

jyoders19 2009-07-06 10:54:00 AM
Eric Nies starred in a reality show with other has been losers. That would've been a nice "where are they now."

Jackson suffered a heart attack and died on March 17, 2004 while driving home after dining with a friend in Los Angeles. He had a daughter and two grandchildren. He was 62

Favorite MTV VJ: Kevin Seal

Kind of pathetic to see John Norris listed as being with MTV News from 1988-present.

Few things have jumped the shark as much as MTV has. It is sad to see how something so great in 80s has become what it is today.

hubcity 2009-07-06 11:15:11 AM
Look to see if you get Palladia, the HD channel MTV Networks is pushing their music programming to. Watched a rather nice Futureheads half-hour as well as the Take Me Out video from Franz Ferdinand last night while idly channel-surfing.

They need a better personality, though; the way they present themselves is a bit too fragile. MTV's logo was pretty great at setting a tone for the channel, with the "TV" looking like graffiti on the big "M"; I think the crystalline butterflies they use on Palladia doom it to presenting rock as though it's classical music.

Then again, rock's not dangerous anymore, is it?
