Sounds like the whole thing is a big goat-fark from the get-go.

This is one of the busiest weekends of the year at WDW, too.

Some of those freaks over at disboards.com are already talking about trying to get partial refunds... after all, they paid for a monorail resort, dammit!

Assholes.

There's a reason I stopped posting on those boards. After performing CPR on a guest on the beach at Castaway Cay who didn't make it, and despite the fact that the family was all on board and already knew, I was called all sorts of various names because I refused to give any more information about what happened.

Just make sure you don't hold your breath when they give you the gas before putting you through the device. The trip is longer than you think.

This is weird. Just 2 days ago, I was reading up on events that happened in 1985 on wikipedia (its my birthyear).

I come across the entry "June 26 - The Walt Disney World Resort Monorail Gold catches fire on the EPCOT beam around 9:00 p.m., due to friction from a flat tire.".

And I think to myself, "hmm. its been a while since they've had a monorail problem...wonder when the next one will be..."

One of the most bizarre things about that board is that there's another site whose raison d'être is to rag on the disboards.

Disboards mods lurk at the unDis site and ban any disboards poster who also posts on the unDis.

The general public are pretty much assholes. I work with mass groups of people, and it's pretty sickening the crap they pull.

As a side note, I've been to Disney World 8 times and loved every minute and time that I've been. The main reason why it is so awesome is because of the cast and crew. It's a wonderful place already, but the employees of the park make it even better because they're very nice.

almandot: Allow me to quote user NormalVisual from disney fan site micechat.com

I'm a former Mark VI railie, and I stay in touch with a fair number of folks in the department. Here's what I've heard. I'm going to stress that it's what I've heard, and I can't represent this as absolute fact. Take that for what it's worth.

The short, short version is that Monorail Central cleared Monorail Pink in reverse into the Concourse (the Epcot side of the TTC) station without being aware that Monorail Purple was still in the station. Pink was cleared with MAPO override, meaning that the driver would have disabled the anti-collision system (there are a variety of legitimate reasons for doing this), and would have been acting on faith that Central wouldn't have cleared him into a dangerous situation because it sometimes is difficult to see everything you'd want to in the cab mirrors, particularly at night on a curve such as the one he was backing along. For whatever reason, Purple just sat in the station without attempting to avoid the accident, and was struck by Pink moving at the full 15 mph allowed during MAPO override. From what I understand, the driver of Purple was a new transfer from another department. Why Central would not have made sure the station was clear before moving any trains is a bit of a mystery, but I've heard that no one was actually in the control console (the control tower-looking place at Concourse) at the time. To my knowledge, there were no electrical or mechanical problems in play here. Again, I have to stress that I'm relating what I've heard, and I was not there. This is a second-hand account from others more familiar with the situation.

Based on pictures and reports it seems like pink backed up past the station and into purple, as opposed to hitting purple parked in the station, but the details on everything are still very sketchy right now.

Video after the incident. (new window)

If pink backed up into purple, the fastest would be 15 mph. The driver in purple would have had seen pink backing into it and would have radioed to find out what is going on. They wouldn't back up trains so close on a normal run. If control for some reason didn't call purple to tell them pink was backing up or didn't realize it; the driver would have been radioing in that pink was going to hit him.

Assuming that
1. He was paying attention
2. He could get a transmission out. The nextel radio system seriously sucks.

I tend though to think that #1 was the issue, otherwise I assume he would have exited the train himself.

I've never even been to Disneyworld and that was my question, yeah - if he saw the train coming toward him, is it possible for him to run out of his car or back into the train himself? If so, you'd think he maybe would have.

First LA, then Boston, then DC, now Orlando...

I smell a rat. One with big round ears and has a pet dog named Goofy.

Pluto is a dog. Goofy is some kind of weird, godless, "Island of Doctor Moreau" genetic mutation somewhere between a dog and a human being.

Goofy began life as "Dippy Dawg". He is as much of a dog as Mickey is a mouse and Donald is a duck. Pluto's the mutant: an animal in the Disney universe unable to speak English or dress himself.

Dippy's debut:

Fair point. I think "going alone" is the qualifier. It's kind of creepy if a single guy is walking alone in the park by himself.

I seem to have developed my wife calls the "Stabler Stare". Whenever I'm in a public place, I'm constantly looking for creeps with cell phones or digital cameras who are trying to take pictures they shouldn't be taking pics of.

Sad indeed.

I'm actually looking over the Wiki article on the monorail, and this actually shouldn't have happened. If the trains get too close, the emergency brakes are applied and the driver has to manually override them. If any driver gets close enough for that system to active just three times in their entire career, they are barred from driving ever again. Those safety protocols almost make this sound a bit like a suicide.

Nope, you're looking at the accident in reverse. The truth is that purple was stopped and Pink backed into it, not the other way around. This definitely wasn't suicide.

Then it's murder

I'm a hobbyist photographer, and I never take pictures of people unless they know I am. And even then, I don't put it on the internet unless they give me permission. Someone I know is very very sensitive about pictures of her children being on the net, and knowing all the creeps out there (and especially the creeps you don't know who are out there) who can blame her?

But I can see your point that if someone is wearing an outfit that's calling attention to her, it's a grey area.

Took the wife to Epcot this past Mother's day. Big juicy aged steak at the Cellar in Canada, couple of glasses of fine champagne in France, tall glass of Becks in Germany followed by appetizers with tableside belly dancers in Marrakesh. Fireworks, nice boat ride, beautiful weather - could not of been better.
