It looks like it happened at a station, so it was probably a rear-end crash.

The 20,000 Leagues ride looked cool when it first opened. But it was lame with the automatonic mermaids. The glass-bottom boat rides at Silver Springs are more fun because it was all real.

/Sans mermaids, of course.

Any system can crash when safeguards are removed. As far as I'm aware of already, at least 5 different safeguards that we are trained to or are part of the system itself were overridden or ignored.

I'm actually looking over the Wiki article on the monorail, and this actually shouldn't have happened. If the trains get too close, the emergency brakes are applied and the driver has to manually override them. If any driver gets close enough for that system to active just three times in their entire career, they are barred from driving ever again. Those safety protocols almost make this sound a bit like a suicide.

Nope, you're looking at the accident in reverse. The truth is that purple was stopped and Pink backed into it, not the other way around. This definitely wasn't suicide.

Oh, I guess I just assumed by the crunching that he had hit the stopped one at speed coming into the station. That's a pretty good amount of damage for what must have been a low speed collision.

15 MPH. But yes, I was surprised at the amount of damage. At the same point, there is very little structural up there and the whole mess is made of composite panels. The real meat of the train starts behind where the pilot sits.

2AM? I didn't realize there was anything going on that late at WDW for the monorails to be running.

TexasPete [TotalFark] 2009-07-05 03:18:39 PM
Its good no passengers were hurt. The cars are very roomy and never overfilled with people, and everything is covered and padded very well. I remember riding with my sister, and the intercom would come on "Please stand clear of the doors. Por favor, mentengense a le jago de las puertas." We'd look excited, yell "Margaritas in the front car!? And get up and walk to the next car to wait and see how many other people left to go to the front car. I guess theres no margaritas in the front car anymore.

simpsonfan 2009-07-05 03:19:02 PM
I always try to ride up front. At one time, there were seats in the nose, as now, but the driver sat in a bubble dome at the top. There were two seats up there too, I've sat there as well.

I want the Mine Train back.

NO FARKING WAY! Say it wasn't so! Don't tell me there was a monorail involved, too!

4th of july. Parks are open till midnight or later. System runs till at least 2 hours after the last park closes.

tudorgurl: How sad, that poor young man. I wonder what happened?

From what my friends have told me, a chain of fantastic and stupid errors. What I can say for sure is
1. It wasn't suicide.
2. Purple was not moving at the time of impact.
3. At least 4 different pieces of the standard operating guide had to be violated in order for this to happen.

I'm a former Mark VI railie, and I stay in touch with a fair number of folks in the department. Here's what I've heard. I'm going to stress that it's what I've heard, and I can't represent this as absolute fact. Take that for what it's worth.

The short, short version is that Monorail Central cleared Monorail Pink in reverse into the Concourse (the Epcot side of the TTC) station without being aware that Monorail Purple was still in the station. Pink was cleared with MAPO override, meaning that the driver would have disabled the anti-collision system (there are a variety of legitimate reasons for doing this), and would have been acting on faith that Central wouldn't have cleared him into a dangerous situation because it sometimes is difficult to see everything you'd want to in the cab mirrors, particularly at night on a curve such as the one he was backing along. For whatever reason, Purple just sat in the station without attempting to avoid the accident, and was struck by Pink moving at the full 15 mph allowed during MAPO override. From what I understand, the driver of Purple was a new transfer from another department. Why Central would not have made sure the station was clear before moving any trains is a bit of a mystery, but I've heard that no one was actually in the control console (the control tower-looking place at Concourse) at the time. To my knowledge, there were no electrical or mechanical problems in play here. Again, I have to stress that I'm relating what I've heard, and I was not there. This is a second-hand account from others more familiar with the situation.

Based on pictures and reports it seems like pink backed up past the station and into purple, as opposed to hitting purple parked in the station, but the details on everything are still very sketchy right now.

Video after the incident. (new window)

You have to consider that the entire force of a train-on-train wreck is constrained along one dimension, with only slight relief when the first car derails. I'm for trains being run by a virtual cockpit and the first car being solely sensors and impact-dissipaters.

Mr. Toad is still at Disneyland, they got rid of the Bear Jamboree for the Winnie the Pooh ride.

The new Toy Story Mania is a lot of fun, over in California Adventure.

Yeah this sucks for everyone involved. Imagine being a kid there where Disney attempts to make every part of your experience "magical" and you end up seing a persons life being extinguished. I know fark always trashes Disney but it is one of the last "polite" places I've been to where people seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs and the guests seem to respond in kind (for the most part). Anyway it's a sad day for this young mans family.
