Yep, I thought the same thing.

Heck, even the special-effects ones like Lost are questionable. It's a real picture, it's just of a Hollywood set.

That's not even good photoshop, much less real. Someone may have stacked a bunch of shiat on their Jetta, but it sure as hell can do that to the rear suspension on that car. Even that is too optimistic since it is a Jetta Trek or GT and therefore has a rear spoiler, making the ridiculous angle even stupider. Add in non-existent attachment points, and Snopes gets a big fat fail for calling this real.

It is real. Search for overloaded Jetta and you will see photos of it from multiple angles.

The trunk was full of bags of cement, too, IIRC.

No it isn't I have that very same air gun, bought it at Wal-Mart and they still carry it. It is quite accurate for a cheap gun, it is a pumper rather than a springer. I even killed a raccoon that was eating my corn with mine in one shot.

Well... It's on the internet so it must be real.

Take one front wheel drive car. Firmly attach the rear tires into the wheel wells. Try to move forward.

Look, I'm just telling you that the situation in that picture is about as likely as a ~60% Ahmidinnerjacket victory in the Iranian elections.

I modified, and wrenched on VW's for years. What is happening in that picture, and any additional pictures, is faked.

It happened in Waldorf, Maryland. My ex-girlfriend was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base at the time this happened, which is just down the road. It made the local news. Home Depot or whomever made the guy sign a damages release, after the guy showed up and bought enough construction materials to rebuild the World Trade Center, and asked for help loading it all into a farking Jetta.

What you can't see is something like a 1000 lbs. of concrete mix in the back.

I was talking about the image of palin that sgt otter posted. I can't actually see most of the images in this thread. Sgt otters image definitly is a marksmanship simulator but I am guessing you are talking about a diffrent picture...

You're missing something: they didn't stack the wood on at a "ridiculous angle" like that, and when he tried to drive off the load slipped (you can see how the twine is streched backward), and the impact of all that weight rolling down the black is was destroyed the suspension. Or, at the very least, that's what the photoshopper intended you to think.

/thinks it's real

It's real, again, like everyone else has said. It was a huge sensation on the Vortex forums when it happened. Someone who is in the local VW club there went to the Home Depot and got a copy of the form they made the guy sign absolving them of all responsibility for whatever happened when that guy tried to drive away.

The best pics are of the rear strut pillars. They tore through the rear package shelf and cracked the back window. Also, the sleeping individual in the front seat, but that's something else entirely.

You're just not understanding that the rear tires would be firmly planted into the ~1/8th inch steel of the rear fenders, with thousands of pounds of force.

If you loaded 3000 lbs of lead into any MK3 Volkswagen, and shoved the wheels far beyond the point of contact with the inner wheel well, the car would be undrivable. The front tires would simply spin.

Sure, the picture could be viral, unphotoshopped nonsense. They would have to cut out the rear wheel wells, mount the lumber precariously (probably while reinforcing the left rear C-pillar so the glass didn't break), and jack up the front end with suspension blocks or similar shenanigans because the car simply wouldn't lift the front end like that (note concrete and lumber place in front of the rear axle).

It doesn't really matter though, because it would still be fake viral nonsense.

The truth is probably something along the lines of "removed rear springs and shocks, put in concrete, photoshopped on lumber".

The 'shooped UW pamphlet came out in September of 2000, and The Onion (lazily) ran the article in December of that year. I remember some university flack trying to defend it, saying something like, "We spent all summer looking for a picture that showed UW's great diversity, but couldn't find one."

I think they were saying it was all on top at first, and slid down, destroying the rear end of the vehicle as it went. And that Home Depot pretty much knew it would do that, but the poor engineeringly-challenged driver didn't.

Good to see you're actually somewhat reasonable with your position actually. Some yahoos would refuse to believe anything but their first erroneous assumption. And they are all over the political spectrum with their nonsense.
