I believe the Bamyan Buddhas are well worth the trip.

Hopefully someday.

Well there's no age of consent apparently, so lookout Philippines.

I know many soldiers that have done tours through that area. The reviews were explosive, many were blown away by the landscape.

Um, I am currently living and working in Afghanistan, and based on my experience, um, how about no.

NobleHam: Hopefully someday.

My thoughts exactly. There's a lot of history in central Asia, from Alexander to the Silk Road and beyond. I'd very much like to go there, if the time comes when things settle down. Or what counts as "settled down" in central Asia, anyway.

Oh, I can think of several people who could use a nice, long, holiday in Cambodia, er, Afghanistan.

I would love to go someday, this line from the article pretty much sums it up right now.

"But by the end of October, the major historical sites are expected to be landmine-free."

The Navy has informed me they're sending me on IA, so I get to take a 9 month vacation to Afghanistan starting in Feb..

When they stop throwing acid on little girls for going to school, maybe then I will consider investing in a resort.

I hear they have some hot ladies there, if you get to them before they are beaten to death for talking. Or for walking. Or for wearing their hair down. Or for getting an education. Or for voting. Or for not marrying their uncle. Or...

Heh, Sean Hannity was talking about this Friday afternoon. He likened it to people visiting Viet Nam (30-some odd years after the war) and said within ten years it will be a vacation hot-spot.

Before Russia invaded it had some places worth seeing.

Come for the views, stay because you've been kidnapped by Taliban militants!

ggggbabybabybaby 2009-07-05 12:35:48 PM
I'm here right now, property is cheap, it's always sunny. Would be a great place to vacation, if you removed the locals, landmines, dust, IEDs, Malaria infected Misquitos, Camel Spiders.

Then all you would need to do is get some water in there, and find a way to make bikini burkha combos popular.

Afghan family vacation packages 2010.

Subby, stop being such a skeptic. Why do we focus on terrorism so much? Why can't we talk about those cars that don't explode?

I hear they know their way around a hash pipe out there...

I'd go, but not from the capital. I'd enter from the north.

heavily armed and incestuous overly religious population with tribalistic tendancies, mountainous terrain, booming energy sector, folky local art, illegal booze.

Visit Beautiful West Virgnina.

Afghanistan has striking mountains (or so I hear) and I've also been told the people are amazingly friendly. I will go there one day when it's not a war zone.

Just came here to say that religious zealots who would deface and/or destroy ancient artwork deserve to live in the stone age.

Fark the Taliban and any other 'fundamentalist' group.

Now that I got that off my chest, I will probably end up visiting there in the next couple years, courtesy of my Uncle Sam. I'm looking forward to seeing the mountains. I don't think I'd mind visiting there in several years to do some hiking.

There were some areas of the Iraqi desert that had their own particular style of rugged, natural beauty. Course, then I remembered I was in Iraq and I stopped gawking like a tourist and went back to scanning for IEDs.

nutbag: Both Bamyan and Band-e-amir are worth a visit. was there last year

"Nutbag" indeed. I'm impressed.

Currently reading "The Forever War" by Dexter Filkins. I was unaware that parts of Afghanistan were previously much like Dubai is today. Naturally the Taliban ruined that by being 13th century lunatics (thanks Reagan).

crab66: Before Russia invaded it had some places worth seeing.

Exactly. The founders of the Lonely Planet series described going overland from England to India in the 70s .... saying Afghanistan with its hospitality and bazaars and friendly culture were the peak of the trip ... that after Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan were quite boring and they rushed through to get to India. That was the 70s, damned Russia/Soviet Union invading Afghanistan ruined everything.

There's some pretty sweet backpacking in Afghanistan.

TheJoe03 [TotalFark] 2009-07-05 07:20:34 PM
I personally would love to see the world, including places like Africa and Asia, so hopefully one day we can travel to historically important or even interesting places without getting kidnapped. The problem with Afghanistan however is that it's in an area that has been disputed since ancient history. So far now I guess I'll start my exploring in other parts of the USA, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean!

RaynDrahps 2009-07-05 09:34:26 PM
I love how everyone thinks these places are just desert's with no value. There is perhaps more history of civilization in the middle east than anywhere else. By civilization I mean those who actively changed the world around them by building monuments, creating written languages, farming, animal husbandry, etc.. Not that they were civil, but they weren't simply tribal communities foraging for food either. I would love to visit Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and all those places but I would also prefer to visit when I'm welcome.
