It's excellent... for a distance of 3-10'. With minimal physical obstructions and clear room to maneuver. Still not bringing it to a gunfight.

I think some western parents should raise a kid to be strictly trained in a similar way.. to have talents with a sword that could compete with the likes of this guy.

That way we can get in on the samurai competitions, as they have gotten into the hot dog eating competitions.

I've never met anyone who owned a Katana who wasn't a tool who'd completely bought into the whole "OMG KATANAS COULD CUT THE MOON IN HALF" bullshiat. Yes, they're sharp, but when the most armoured guy you're going up against is wearing armour made of lacquered wood, well yes, it will seem that much more sharp. Take your over-ossified single blade fighting style and hit the bricks.

Yes. It means an extra-ordinary event or circumstance, which is a generally accepted English meaning as well. God is not necessary.

yes, but the term is so widely misused...good example is that hudson plane landing. they all called it a miracle. when there is an earthquake and a building collapses and everyone dies except for a baby, and they call it a miracle, i find that offensive.

i think its misconstrued too much with GOD in mind.

but i guess im just hearing it from the wrong people

They could maybe cut some of the replays but I think it would still be 8 + minutes of awesome cutting video.

See, the funny thing is, I've seen the katana put into multiple situations and actually exceed expectation.

What you also fail to recognize is that in Europe, the sword was a weapon, yes, but also a symbol of nobility. When YOU are going up against opponents clad head to toe in steel, a sword won't get you very far - not unless it's large and heavy enough to crush the armor itself (in which case it's hardly a sword anymore, so much as it's a sharpened club), or a sword that is able to get into the gaps in the armor and do damage that way (in which case it's no longer a cutting weapon, but a piercing one - and as such, you won't be cutting anything with it).

Furthermore, the "dull" backside of the katana that you so readily dismiss as inferior to a double-edged sword lends it flexibility and an element of strength. The back of the sword is considerably thicker and softer than the edge, allowing the blade to deflect when it comes into contact with something so it doesn't shatter when it strikes a hard surface. Then again, this assumes a properly-forged katana.

Diff'rent swords for diff'rent folks, I suppose. The Japanese used and developed the katana because it was a highly-effective weapon in the environment it was used in. Had they needed to kill opponents fully clad in steel armor, I'm sure the swords would look a bit more like claymores (or on the other end of the spectrum, rapiers).

The word they keep using is "kami," which means "god" (with a small g.) A better translation would be: "This man has displayed the powers of a god to us."

Great Vid.

Why can't we have basic video controls on youtube or other flash video sites. Like play forward and backward at double speed, 4X, 8X, 16X, or 1/2 speed, 1/4, 1/8, and then frame advance like a dvd?

Is that too much to ask?

That's the point of firearms- they democratize effective violence. With the simple 'point and click' interface, one need not dedicate their lives to martial arts- one can defend themselves effectively with a very short amount of training.

Perhaps it's your opinion that only people with a great deal of time to devote to strength training and martial arts should be able to use effective force?
