Another great MS-born NFL star is gone. :( I haven't felt this bad since Walter Payton passed away.

I grew up nearby in Louisiana, and I must say it still amazes me how many truly great football players came out of little Mississippi
Archie Manning, Sweetness, McNair, Jerry Rice, and Brett Farve are only some of the names.

/This is sad news but it was prolly a love triangle or a drug deal gone bad. When you make enough money you ought to be beyond such things.

FitzShivering: I admit some of the area becomes sketchy around 2 - 3 in the morning, but it still isn't "get double murdered" sketchy. But, then again, maybe he got murdered at 2-3 in the morning. :/

Point taken. I'd rather find myself at 2nd and Lea than around pretty much anywhere on the east side. Still, if I can avoid it, I'm not going to travel down that way.

And yes, the Saucer does own.

/E-mail's comin'...

Ignoring previous snarky comments.

RIP Steve "AIR" McNair. Wasn't an Oilers or Titans fan, but had much respect for him as a QB. He was great.

I'm seriously floored. A more serious OMG has never come from me. I don't care what the circumstances were, and personally PFT can suck my sweaty big toe.....

RIP

This. He was also a remarkably tough man. There aren't too many people who could have put up with the sheer abuse that he did, and still have to beg to be allowed to play. Guy was the epitome of badass, and he was by all accounts a very nice person, as well.

/seriously - didn't he basically injure every single part of his body in his career?
//twice?

According to McNair's official biography, McNair divides his time between homes in Nashville and Mt. Olive, Miss. ESPN reported that McNair's wife, Mechelle, was in Mississippi at the time of the shootings. The couple had just celebrated their 12th anniversary last month.

EchoMike: Thanks for all the condolences, everyone. It means a lot. I know that the Fark community (myself included) can be pretty snarky and tasteless at times, but it's nice to see the kindness show through sometimes. I love this place.

Take care!

My deepest sympathies on the loss of your mum...

On another note, I would like to wager on Amy Winehouse, Dick Clark, or Ted Kennedy. No particular order.

Ravens fan too. It's a good thing this didn't happen a few years back mid-season. Billick would have had his boy Boller in there throwing pics and getting pissed at himself (not that that would have been any better or worse).

That is the first thing that came to mind when I heard of the "double" killing. They are saying his wife was in Mississippi right now too. Steve was a FANTASTIC player. As a Titan fan, I looked forward to watching him ever week. Through all of the injuries, he ALWAYS showed up. I think he has a chance to make it to Canton someday.. hopefully someday SOON. He and Warren Moon really opened up the QB role for many others and made for some exciting football every week, win or lose. RIP!

goddammit, David Eddings died too? Used to read him all the time when growing up, before moving on to better stuff, but for a young teen, his books were awesome.

So, when calculating the "celebrity death groupings," who is the arbitor of how notable you have to be, and over what period of time?

Just curious, want to make sure I follow "the rules."

just heard on the local news here that McNair had keys to the apartment in question, but his real home was in the Green Hills area of Nashville - they tried to just say it was because he had a DUI before, so a friend gave him access to the apartment in case he ever wanted to crash after a night out

aka - some guy let Steve McNair use the place to bang girls - my guess is he brought the wrong girl back there, and by the wrong girl, I mean a girl who had a BF/husband who didn't take kindly to her going to McNair's little getaway spot

"Air" McNair was his handle and rightfully so. But if he decided to run, the tackler almost always needed to bring a friend or two to bring him down. One tough QB.

It reminds me of something Ken Hamblin said on his radio talk show one day.

Hamblin, for those of you who don't know him, is a black man who really looks down his nose at the athlete-worship which pervades black culture; he really hates it when someone calls his show and wants to talk about sports.

So someone called up and wanted to know what he thought about the death of Walter Payton, he did not hesitate to reply:

"Yeah? Well, too bad it wasn't O.J. Simpson!"

I really loved that line, so apt today.

prickle27: If I have to guess on who's the next "athlete" to kick off this mortal coil, it would be this guy.

Probably not. We are genetically designed to huff Marlboros until the age of 60, at which time we switch to huffing young chicks somewhere out on the bayou. It's a time tested formula for us white guys. Suck it. I can still hear those hound dogs barking. Chasing down a hoodoo there.
