The Icelander: And on the subject of jeans: I'm amazed that people will pay more than $150 for jeans that look like they've been sitting in the middle of the highway all day. When I have pants that look like that, I either use them for painting or throw them out.

I was walking by the Abercrombie window at the mall. I stopped and commented that the distressed clothes looked like the reject bin from a Goodwill store. The teenager agreed. If you buy clothes that look like they are 10 years old and you just got done welding in them your an idiot.

Expensive jeans are like expensive anything else: after a certain point, you stop paying for quality and you start paying for name.

But that point of shift is generally much higher than people realize.

Jeans can still be made to last, and if you buy a somewhat expensive pair, they will last you practically forever. People live in jeans. And the higher end ones usually fit a lot better (this, of course, depends on your shape), and keep their shape better.

I'm not going to say "Once you put on a pair of Diesels/Rock & Republic/True Religions, you'll never go back," but you probably will appreciate the difference between those and ones you find at Old Navy a bit more. It's like going to Denny's, then going to Ruth's Chris. Or playing a casio, then playing a Bösendorfer.

/owns Diesels
//also owns Old Navy jeans
///wears the Diesels more often

WaltzingMathilda: gadian: WaltzingMathilda: egads, i'd hate to hear what you guys have to say about people who buy actual high end denim, for 2x as much or more what A&F sells.

We'd still say they were wasting their money for percieved status.

i don't want to alarm you, but designer items generally fit better and last longer. it's the things that are truly "overpriced" that area a waste of money.

e.g., a designer suit is going to look sharper and last through more drycleans than, say, a $200 suit. same goes for denim.

SOME designer clothing fits better and is made better. Many items are simply over priced trendy crap. You really have to know what to look for to find something well made.

I don't buy outrageously priced crap, but I do have a few sets that I wear specifically to go out and meet people I don't know and don't want to know in a week.

Eyebleach: They really don't carry high end anything. They took the Bose marketing approach... spend most of the income on creating a brand name to put on cheap john crap and selling it for hundreds of percent markup.

I've had A&F shirts I have worn on a weekly basis for 8 years. Minimal noticeable wear. Even battery acid spills result in relatively minor holes, compared to other brands.

I've never owned A&F jeans, so I can't comment on them. For jeans, I want 2-3 pairs that I can wear 2 times a week for 1-2 years before I find replacements. AE is barely up to this standard, and they tend to wear relatively fast, IMO.

A&F is one of the most durable brands I've ever owned, and anyone whose ever worn them for durability purposes will probably agree.

I go to Target and buy some jeans. They last about 2 years each being worn every day, cost ~$15 ea when not on sale, and I don't have to risk getting AIDS by going into A&F

In fairness to Bose, Bose spends a lot of money trying to figure out what the average person thinks sounds good, and builds systems to replicate that. They do that well.

What they don't do well (because they don't try) is create accurate reproduction of recorded sound. They also tend to use materials that are below par for the price they charge.

Gangs basically encourage their members to do things that each gang member would not normally do by themselves. Any group has this same effect, though. But gangs are typically associated with illegal activities. In this sense, we don't call "clubs" gangs, because a gang is typically seen as a nuisance. You could theoretically call any group of people a gang, but why would you want to ;-P

Officers arrived to find 11 people removing tags from shirts and hundreds of high-end jeans, Keyes said.

If the value of the jeans is $10,000 and hundreds of pairs were recovered, those are some pretty cheap jeans. 200 pairs valued at $50 is $10,000, assuming it was only 200 pairs. Levi's 501's tend to cost about that much, so...Not really impressed. How high end can they be if only $50?

I don't own anything made by A&F so I can't comment on their durability, but I refuse to go into their dimly lit, perfume soaked stores because I like to see what I'm buying and not suffocate in the process.

My Lee regular fit cost $25, and they're more high end then a lot of farkers claim to wear (Most claim to wear the $11 fat guy jeans from wal mart, which I don't doubt), so $50 is pretty up there. And the reporter could be overstating the number a bit. Hundreds could mean 'a lot, but I didn't want to count'. Also, AF doesn't do really high end stuff, as has been established.

darkscout 2009-07-05 12:11:46 AM
As much as I "hate" the clothes. A&F and AF are the best clothes made. I own quite a few pair of shorts that I found at Good Will. My A&F shorts have out lasted every thing else I've owned. They're built better than the shiat you'll get at Walmart.

However paying OEM prices for them is stupid. Good Will FTW.

All groups encourage members to do things they would not normally do. AA encourages its members to not drink, something they as individuals would not normally do.

The only difference between a "gang" and a "club" is whether or not society finds their activities desirable or not. Which, again, has been the same since the dawn of history (and probably before that).

So what's a good alternative to Bose then? I'm not an audiophile, mind. In fact, I'm pretty close to being completely tone deaf but I'd like to get a nice pair of noise-cancelling headphones and Bose seems to be the only brand out there working on that.

I had a pair of Creative Lab's and while they were sufficient considering price, they did wear a bit too quickly.

Carhartt is the best bang for the buck. They are about $35. If you work, hunt, fish .... oh wait this is fark ..... if you are outside and on your knees .... these jeans will last about twice as long as other store bought ( ask your mom for them ) jeans.

Bose is a shame ...... I can't tell you what brand to buy, try newegg.com ..... bose is like an ipod .... you can get an mp3 player that does the same thing for 1/3 the price.

Headphones? Their headphones are decent enough, if a bit overpriced.

Just please, for the love of Jebus, don't buy into their 'home theater' systems. They sound just awful for the price on them. They could be tolerated for about 300 bucks, but 2000 and up? It's highway robbery. It's almost impossible to hear a side by side comparison of Bose vs. any other brand due to the display restriction placed on retailers. Sometimes you can find a high fidelity store that has bought a Bose HT and set it up next to their comparably priced and lower systems to demonstrate just how awful it is. They spend their money on marketing telling people that they are the best available, and that segment of society that takes commercials as gospel believe it. Monster comes to mind here. Or even the Enzyte supplement to a much greater and more shady degree.

I'm a fan of Paradigm, B&W, and Energy for matched HT loudspeakers ranging in price from cheap up to 'if you need to ask...'. Immensely better sounding. Couple them with a Denon or even something like an Onkyo receiver and you can tear a $4000 Bose a new one for 1/4th the price.

I wear 501s, have for years. I have a pair from 1998 still that fit but are a bit worn. The pairs I bought last year? The belt loops on the sides have already come unstitched. Pretty annoying since they're still in decent shape.

I used to wear A&F shirts, lasted a while. A few years ago I started buying overstock from REI and the like. Picked up a few there that have worn well (Royal Robbins). The GF got me into thrift stores lately, got some shirts there that have worn well.
