Whoo!

East Rock Global Studies Magnet Elementary School Class of 2003! (^) (seriously.. am I that old that i can't do the match for a 19 year old getting out of elementary school in 2003?)

Something tells me from Facebook that them Huelsman's been in New Haven for a while...
Just going out on a limb here... (^)

And BTW.. the initial posting's picture is not her... too many australian "friends" (and wrongly spelled last name) for such a classy CT chick.

panda: EggFool: Kome: It's somewhat comforting to know what women are such bad drivers that even other women want to beat the crap out of them for doing stupid sh*t on the road.

She yanked her out of the passenger seat. So not only did the husband sit there and watch his wife get biatch slapped, but it was his fault in the first place.

We don't know that it's the husband's fault, or if it is, how much his fault it is. Subby made up the "cut off" part, there are no details in TFA. If we assume there was some actual reason she was the target, rather than the driver (very likely), then we can guess.
For example, one scenario could be that the husband cut off the 19 year old, who then honked, which caused the wife to stick her hand out the window and flick her off, which led to the ramming and beat down.

It's possible the wife getting beat up was totally irrational, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Aaaah, the voice of reason. He's probably still a dick though.

I had a car push in front of me in downtown traffic after thinking they could go faster in the other lane (I do let people in in traffic but not if they try shenanigans like that), and I gave the guy the finger and his wife turned around and we all had a big fight from the safety of our cars, and she was definitely the more aggressive. Didn't smack her though. They coulda been ninjas.

I prefer to let my girlfriends fight their own battles. I wouldn't want to suggest in any way that I was intervening because I thought they were weak and needed a man to solve their problems. Besides, if I jumped in, I might spill my popcorn.

Fluffy_the_cactus 2009-07-04 12:14:23 PM
If some lady his my wife, I wouldn't step in and physically fight the other woman. My wife can handle herself and I'm not going to jail for hitting a woman. Period.

Call me whatever you want, but I'm not going to do ANYTHING physically violent to a woman UNLESS she has a weapon and is threatening to kill either myself or a member of my family.

jbrooks544 2009-07-04 12:14:48 PM
Huelsman was charged with operating a motor vehicle with the intent to harass, second-degree reckless endangerment, two counts of risk of injury to a minor, breach of peace, third-degree assault and operating without a license.

Sounds about right.

Pretty hard way to learn that you are an adult now, and you just can't go around hitting people without incurring very serious consequences. Too bad she didn't learn it younger.

I'm guessing the whole thing happened so fast that the husband didn't have time to prevent his wife being injured. Also, he had to be sure to protect the children.

Well, now, wait just a minute. We've never met any of these people. His wife could be such an evil biatch that he was fully justified in not only sitting there, but also in cheering the other girl on. Towards the end of my marriage I might have done the same thing.

First of all, "hate" is a perfectly normal verb (as has been demonstrated).

Second, exactly how long do you think it takes to get in several significant blows? And how long for a person to get out of a seatbelt, out of a car, and around to the other side? Just because hubby wasn't able to teleport instantly to help his wife doesn't mean he didn't intervene as soon as he could reach the scuffle.

Except in rape cases, mind you. But with regards to every other violent crime, yes the legal system is still prone to viewing women as helpless victims when the other party involved is a man.

I have to agree with the earlier posts about keeping a dad away from any catfight. I sure my hubby could easily handle any woman trying to get the better of me, but one mark on her from him and he goes away. Marks from me, and the cops drag her off. And someone has to keep the kids out of the fray. Given the right circumstances, I would use my kids as weapons. Short, wiry, and always aim straight for the crotch.

Too bad it was the husband driving, otherwise that comment would have been comedy gold.

There were 2 kids in the car. Perhaps he was concerned that the assailants mother might harm the kids if he intervened. Plus, he probably would have gotten arrested for hitting a woman - double standard.

Wonder if mom was a former GLOW girl?

True, we won't know how long it took hubby to unbuckle and come to the aid of his wife. However, as a general principle, there's no way I'd let some little wench attack my wife. It's a husband's job to protect his wife, and I wouldn't even feel like a man if I let something like that happen.

Beowoolfie 2009-07-04 12:57:07 PM
Lusiphur: ppfftt...If the husband had so much as given that woman a mean look, he would have been in prison for life. Men can't hit women. It will never ever end in their favor in the justice system. Ever.

The risk of going to prison is an excuse for letting some piece of crap beat up your wife? I don't think so!

//Then again, ram my car after I cut you off, and by the time you can run up to the car doors, they'll be locked, windows only cracked...and I'll have my pistol at hand, tho not visible. This stuff never happens to the paranoid :)

I never drive with my car unlocked. Sunroof open, windows up. Feels good and keeps the lower castes out of my vehicle.

I hit a woman once. Old neighborhood. Was in the yard with my daughter and one of the local drug dealers drives up to do a mobile deal. I ask the woman to take that crap elsewhere. She gives me a look like I was speaking Mandarin. I send my daughter in. "Uhm, Alice, I said move it, take it elsewhere" followed by my usual string of not so nice words. She gives me the bird. Nice, she's been caught selling out of her car twice already. Then it hits me...she'll get caught again, someone will feel bad for her and let her go. Weed? I don't care. Crack...no.

I walk around to her door and lean in...."Alice, take this sh*t elsewhere, I'm not f*cking around". She just looks...so I pulled her out of the car and slapped her. Then I went off on another tirade (I have anger issues). Cops then roll up and the male cop asks what's going on. I explain and told him that I was just escorting her out of my neighborhood since kids are playing here and she doesn't live nor belong here. She has no clue WTF is going on. Cop asks her what she was doing parked there then asks to search...right on the seat is a ziplock with some what could have been crack.

Cop put her in the back of his car and the female officer told me that it wasn't ok to hit people. :P Woops, I said "ask her if she wants to press charges". She said no, I got a lecture from the other cop - "what if she had a gun?". Haven't seen her since.

Last time Halley's comet came around, I was passenger in a small pickup with friends in the back returning from camping out when we had a freak accident. We were driving back from Joshua Tree NM in the left lane of a two lane road doing the speed limit when a small pickup truck ahead of us meanders onto the road, and then just as we were about to pass, makes a U turn from the right hand lane across us.

We hit that pickup and I still remember the slow-motion of that pickup's rear view shattering and falling down. We came to a stop and then about 30 seconds later, we get hit. What? This road is empty.

Turns out the pickup that was making a U turn had completed the turn and more and had rammed us in the rear. Well, that's where my friends were.

Without thinking, I jumped out of the passenger seat and raced back to the truck that had just rammed us to stop them from going postal all over us. I have no idea what I would have done, I'm pretty much a farking coward 98% of the time.

So what had happened is I found a woman driving the first pickup. She was clearly drunk and stoned off her ass, and I don't even think she realized she had been hit by us or that she had driven full circle to hit us. And of course she was completely uninjured and as I recall, just drove away.

Our little 1/4 ton pickup was totaled and that was the day I found you could stuff the entire contents of a 1/4 ton pickup complete with a weekend of camping supplies into the trunk of a cadillac and never even notice it.

Yeah all those people who find the idea of someone assaulting their wife deeply repugnant are just a bunch of ITG's. A real tough guy would have helped her beat his wife since she got our of the car without his permission.

I think the husband was hosed no matter what he did - his best course of action seems to be to "stay with the car".

Let's say he had got out of the car. He would have had to:

1) Unbuckle his seat belt (if he was wearing one).
2) Shut off the car (can't see him remembering this - failure to operate a motor vehicle safely?).
3) Get out of the car (will he lock the doors?).
4) Go around to the other side of the car (abandoning the kids?).
5) Then somehow getting a hold of the other woman and stopping the fight (all sorts of issues here).

Even if he had done all of this, and risked going to jail on any number of other charges relating to abandoning his kids in a running/non-running vehicle in the middle of traffic, coupled with violence against the female (which we know men rarely get a pass on) - in the time it would've taken, his wife would still have been beaten up (maybe only two punches instead of three), and now he would likely be in jail (charges filed by the cops) for abandoning the children in a vehicle.

You and I both know that's how it likely would've played.

I can't even think of a way the guy could've stopped anything without him getting charges of some sort against him, if not jail time. Even if he had a gun with him, and fired a shot in the air (even perfectly straight up to prevent a ballistic arc...as if that is even possible for a human to do), while the fight would've stopped damn quick, the wife would still likely have injuries, and he would have a "discharge of a firearm inside city limits" charge against him (and possible jail time).

The husband likely feels awful; he was impotent at a time when his wife needed him most, he was hamstrung by laws preventing him from doing anything, and now he has to live with the humiliation of knowing this. Everyone else gets to rag on him for doing nothing. These people, as well as the cretins who began fighting, seem to not be able to think much past the present.

Anything the husband could've done would have likely left his family poorer for it (his jail time, his charges, any fines, him not working and/or possibly being fired), and the wife still would've been beaten. He made the "right" choice in staying with the kids, but I bet he felt awful doing it...

Bathia_Mapes [TotalFark] 2009-07-04 02:10:33 PM
A breach of the peace was a common-law offense, but is presently governed by statute in many states. It is frequently defined as constituting a form of Disorderly Conduct. Examples include using abusive or obscene language in a public place, resisting a lawful arrest, and trespassing or damaging property when accompanied by violence.

Sounds like that 19-year old's mother might have been running her mouth off and probably tried to interfer with her daughter's arrest. I wouldn't be surprised to her that she encouraged her daughter to beat the passenger as well. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

cr0sh,

I'm well aware of the bias against men in the legal system, but I think you're going overboard. In reality, if he had used proportionate force to protect his wife, it's unlikely that the onus would have been put on him. Remember, he would have been protecting his wife, a woman, from assault.

I came here to complain about the complete puss of a husband who, according to TFA, didn't bat an eye as his (presumably) beloved spouse got beaten up, but I see it's been done already. And to those who say he couldn't have defended her without getting arrested for it... you think any decent spouse would care?

Anyway, leaving satisfied.
