FTA: "The blogosphere is already oscillating between whether Palin's planning a run for president in 2012 or whether she's just written her political epitaph. Me, I'm just wondering whether her next act will be, say, going head-to-head against Rachel Maddow..."

That's some real journalism there Lou...

yeah. bullshiat.

besides - if she quit her job and abandoned the people of alaska just to make more money and have a national TV presence, she's even more shallow, arrogant and self-serving than previously thought - and would have zero credibility on any issue. but the mouth-breathers would love her, so it's still a possibility.

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2009-07-04 10:59:53 AM
Judging from that trainwreck she put on yesterday, she cannot speak off-cuff.

So I just don't see this happening.

That imbecile can't speak when she has some of the best speech writers in America working for her, what makes anyone think that she can host a talk show? I wouldn't be surprised to see her on Maury Povich in one of those "Who's your daddy?" episodes, but otherwise, I just don't think it's in the cards.

I wonder why everyone's favorite little "conservative" farker hasn't submitted 40 headlines about this to the queue and then commented in them to lament the fact that people are "afraid" discuss it.

How strange.

Just because her family could fill a whole week's lineup of Maury doesn't mean she deserves her own show.

She probably still has, and will maintain, enough of a fan base to make a Fox News show doable. I mean, O'Reilly's nightly audience is only a little over 2 million at best.

But, yeah, she'll never go outside that core.

I can't think of anyone in recent memory who would be worse suited to heading up a TALK show.

If your host can't speak intelligently, or at least provide structure, then . . . what the hell is it? That's right, it's a train wreck, just like everything else she's touched.

Honestly? She could do it - look at Tyra Banks. She makes every interview, no matter who it's with, about HER.

I can see Palin doing it.

But I've read some backstory stuff overnight and it seems she's about to be indicted on embezzlement charges along with Todd and the construction company that built both their house and the big community center/show arena in Wasilla.

THAT makes sense, as to why she looked so panicked.

Mr. Coffee Nerves [TotalFark] 2009-07-04 11:58:51 AM
I've been saying this for months, except I said it would happen after she got crushed in her gubernatorial re-election race.

Since she yanked up her bootstraps and ran crying and hiding from THAT, the timetable has been moved up for "YOU BETCHA!" on the RFD Network.

Or, a revival of Hee Haw!

Maddow vs. Palin? I'd love to see that showdown. Palin couldn't hold her own against bumbling Biden. Maddow would make mincemeat out of her.

Even if you disagree with her politically, Maddow's extremely intelligent.

Maddow graduated at age 20 from Stanford, earning a Rhodes Scholarship along the way and holds a PhD (DPhil) in PolySci from Oxford She's hardly the vacuous, incomprehensible, willfully ignorant type as is Palin. I'd say she has a hell of lot of credibility on matters of politics given her past record of success in the area.

Palin has a degree in journalism. She has been a local newscaster. I thought this would happen after the 2008 election. The kind of numbers she would bring in would be huge for cable news - I work with poeple who would gladly follow her to the ends of the earth. A Palin Power Hour would be must-see tv for them.

I just kind of blink because you cannot counter this kind of ignorance.

I've got a throbbing migraine between my eyes and I've only been at work for two hours. I blame you Sarah

Do you mean without Fox filtering out all of the negatives?

You know Fox - the cable news network that is on 24 hours per day that beats all other cable news networks in the ratings. COMBINED.

Conservative talk radio, heard by tens of million of people per day? That media filter?

The WSJ, NY Post or Fox Broadcast network? Those media filters?

What are the Possibles?

Seeking another job (presidential run, fox news host):
Quitting a governorship mid-term leads to the label "quitter" and the concern "if she would quit the governorship because things got tough, what prevents her from quitting as president".
Moving to a non-public-service job (Fox news) is the kiss of death for any future run at office.

(It seems unlikely)

Scandal:
This would have to be a scandal of the form/size we haven't seen before. The standard response for governors and statesmen is to hunker down, deny everything, rinse and repeat.

(I just don't see it)

Family emergency:
We are not talking about pregnancy, here, she has shown that she is willing to run for office while being pregnant.
We are talking about something on the level of cancer, Tony Snow levels of cancer to quit so suddenly.

Certainly anything is possible, especially with someone who has such high levels of maverickyness as she, but I don't see "leaving mid term" as being an irrational decision, rather she has all the pieces to the puzzle and her actions somehow logically fit.

Lastly, has anyone considered how erratic Palin's last two months have been in the media? Maybe this is more evidence of a strain on her/family that might help fill in some of the empty areas of the puzzle.

This would have to be a scandal of the form/size we haven't seen before. The standard response for governors and statesmen is to hunker down, deny everything, rinse and repeat.

(I just don't see it)

Why on earth would you now expect her to have a "standard response?"

She's a diva and a power freak. Whatever is coming is something she doesn't control. If she can't control it, she doesn't want it. It's in keeping with her past.

Bah! Mike Huckabee already did the whole former politician turned quai-journalist talking head. Sarah Palin has so much more star potential with her good looks and "Aw shucks" charm. I offer five pitch ideas for sure fire hit vehicle television shows for our favorite Pit Bull in Lipstick.

Codename: Barracuda
Sarah Palin, having the unique position of seeing Russia from her house, is tapped by an elite covert spy organization to infiltrate into Russian territory and spy on the godless and communist sympathetic reindeer and polar bear populations threatening America.

That's Sarah!
An uproarious yet wholesome family sit-com from the makers of Reba, Sarah Palin plays an ex-vice presidential nominated stay at home mom of four. Her next whacky next door neighbor Levi Johnston always comes up with get rich schemes while wooing her wholesome oldest daughter. Her young son Trig, is the precocious wise cracking child genius. The twins Willow the nerdy cute girl and Piper the tom-boy wild one are always creating headaches for the wonder mom.

CSI:Wassila

Sarah Palin trades in her political career and becomes Alaska's best forensic scientist. Using the same prowess she showed as governor she solves the grizzliest crimes imaginable in this gripping police procedural. Her partner is none other than her husband, Todd. Together with their cutting intellect and their unquestioning embracement of science, they keep Alaska safe from murders and rapists from Fairbanks to Nome.

Caribou

This dramedy, from the creators of thirtysomething, look at the trials and tribulations of an ex-governor and her brood as they navigate through the pitfalls of living an upper-middle class life style while maintaining there salt of the earth roots. The series first season arc focuses Sarah's embezzlement scandal with a warm wit and charm. You'll laugh and cry often in the same scene.

Northern Lights
While snowmobiling in Denali with Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, John Ensign, Bobby Jindal and the mysterious Sean Hannity, a freak blizzard strikes. After the storm the ragtag group find them lost in a weird snowy perdition where the Northern Lights are always glowing. They must learn to survive together while encountering a menacing threat of a seldom seen socialistic tribe. Why are they trying to steal Bristol's baby? What does the mysterious number 538 mean? This long story arcing series will pose more questions than will ever be answered.

People are very quick with the "that chick's insane" and
quickly turn the amp up to eleven.

There are different levels of insanity and she certainly has some. Allowing a rallies to get to the level of vitriol she did is some sort of disorder. The weird ass religious ceremonies are another. The attempts at lying to get around her husband's connection with the secessionists is another.

But she's not barking at the moon mad, though, no matter how the opposition couches each and every one of her actions.

She functions in society as a leader of a state. She has some connection with reality and society and how to "get by".

The question is, even given some erratic behavior, she is capable of making choices that benefit her; given that quitting her job IS A HUGE CHOICE, what are benefits to it (as she sees them) and what could make her make THIS decision in the way that she did: "quitting in 3 weeks, see ya"

Downstais: As compared to Hannity, Olberman, Maddow, O'reilly, etc.?

Maddow graduated at age 20 from Stanford, earning a Rhodes Scholarship along the way and holds a PhD (DPhil) in PolySci from Oxford She's hardly the vacuous, incomprehensible, willfully ignorant type as is Palin. I'd say she has a hell of lot of credibility on matters of politics given her past record of success in the area.

Well-educated? Yeah, obviously. "Success in the area"? Wouldn't you have to either win an election (even a primary) or or run a successful campaign (even a primary) in order to have "success in the area" of politics?
This Palin move is very curious to me, but comparing the "success in the area" of politics of a talking head who happened to get an Oxford degree with someone who has won two elections, one statewide; is pretty silly.

... and, ladies and gentlemen, THIS is why the GOP is losing elections. It's full of dolts who think that winning two elections in a complete backwater is the intellectual equivalent to earning Stanford and Oxford degrees.

Keep it up, morons, and continue your slide into a minor regional party.

Half religion, half political talk. All mushed together.

She could have a "Hints for Home-schoolers" segment, a survivalist cooking segment (think of the cookware merchandising possibilities), a fashion segment, and a hot topics segment where she interviews people and gives her take on the day's headlines. And she could critique the comics. I am tell you, there is some big money to be made off this. And, again, there is a huge built-in market.

Even if it turns out that she did embezzle, it wouldn't affect her numbers. The people I know who support her wouldn't believe it. Or they would excuse it. And they would watch and buy.

You forgot the transparently megalomaniacal level of ambition. Not that there's anything wrong with ambition per se, but the amount one would need to think that six years on the city council and six years at the part-time, drive-thru mayor's office in Wasilla, and two years as governor of Alaska, with an education that at best could be described as meandering and scattershot, is exactly the sort of background that prepares someone to be one step away from being President of the United States, is frightening.

A rational person, with regular politician-levels of ambition, would have said "Thanks, but no thanks" to McCain, then spent the next four years crafting a political persona and developing a platform that would make her a viable option for 2012 or beyond.

I'm not sure she could really be described as ambitious. Vane, sure. Avaricious, yes. Narcissistic? Definitely. But ambitious people work hard, challenge themselves and those around them, and strive to achieve. Palin outsourced most of the mayoral duties to a city manager. She has her husband go to important meetings dealing with official government business in her place. She doesn't read and makes no attempts to improve herself by learning. She spent 6 years in college getting a bachelor's degree in journalism. She wants to see her name in lights, but she isn't willing to do any of the work required to get it there.

(Note - there's nothing wrong with spending 6 years to get a degree or hiring someone else to do your job for you, they just aren't marks of an ambitious person.)

What hugely successful multinational corporation did Palin leave North Idaho Community College to found?

Obviously if someone leaves school to start a legitimate business they are ambitious. They found a more productive, more instructive use of their time and pursued it. Sarah Palin did not. They gambled a few years on a more productive future and it paid off, but if it had failed they would have patched up their resume with a degree in a few semesters (if you're ambitious enough, you can fit almost any bachelor's degree into 4 semesters, and most can fit into 2). What gamble did Palin take that failed? What excuse did she have to take so long in school after it failed?

She chose to spend 6 years in school to get one bachelor's degree, in journalism of all things. She then spent a few months working in her chosen field before quitting to be a full-time mom/housewife. Again, there's nothing wrong with that. A similar statement could be crafted to characterize millions if not tens of millions of Americans. It's not a mark of ambition, though.

(As an aside, most of my classmates, both undergraduate and graduate, who were involved in successful entrepreneurial ventures were not particularly ambitious. Generally they were more ambitious in their studies than in their outside projects, which they viewed more as neat hobbies until they suddenly turned into money makers. I knew people who made tens of millions of dollars before graduating, but they still graduated without delay.)

darkhorse23: But I've read some backstory stuff overnight and it seems she's about to be indicted on embezzlement charges along with Todd and the construction company that built both their house and the big community center/show arena in Wasilla.

THAT makes sense, as to why she looked so panicked.

If that is true, then how on earth could she possibly have imagined that this would not eventually be revealed?

For that matter, how could any politician or public figure who has a gigantic skeleton in his/her closet, and knows it, not assume that there's a pretty good chance that it's inevitably going to come bursting out of the closet?

There has got to be a new diagnosis in the DSMV just for "Mount Everest-height level of denial and self-delusion".

Alien Robot: Bacon is not Your Buttie: (Note - there's nothing wrong with spending 6 years to get a degree or hiring someone else to do your job for you, they just aren't marks of an ambitious person.)

Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Dean Kamen still haven't finished the degrees they started. They must not be very ambitious persons.

Did I miss the part where, during her college education, Palin set up a corporation or was engaged in business of any kind?

Because that's the way things are done in Alaska.

Much of the corruption we uncovered over the last several years involved magical investment opportunities that return 1600% in a year's time... New first floor for Ted's house.... Federal land buyouts... Reduced pricing on prime real estate... etc.

They've been very successful until the last year or two.

The oil-state *is* a small town, for all intents...

But no, if this is true, it's part of a larger pattern of corruption there, and it's not just a Wasilly thing.

All the biggest corruption evidence happened with real estate investments/transactions/improvements. Some were so well-done, they couldn't be indicted, but we knew damned well what had happened -- we just couldn't prove quid pro quo.

My favorite is still Ted's magical investment. J&L properties buys and develops real estate in Alaska. They agreed to build a new headquarters for the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC).

ASRC has over 10 billion in assets. No company of that size leases a building for 20 years -- you buy your own and capitalize on the equity. Instead, for some odd reason, ASRC did exactly that -- they leased the building for 20 years, turning it into a HUGE profit for J&L, and a trickling loss for ASRC.

Now the fun part.

J&L let Ted buy into that project for $50K. About a year later, they bought out his investment (as ASRC had signed the lease and upped the on-paper value) for $800K.

Meanwhile, Ted gave J&L some very nice earmarks -- such as building the new housing at one of Anchorage's military bases.

And, pay attention -- the head of ASRC, which had foolishly rented the building, pumping all of that money away while allowing J&L to keep the equity, had some land in the Arctic that had some military clutter on a couple of acres, left over from the cold war.

No toxins. Just construction waste on a few acres. Ted earmarked money to buy 160 acres of that worthless tundra for urban real estate prices, filling ASRC's chairman's pockets.

Ted got rich. J&L got rich. And ASRC chairman got rich. Nobody got busted. That's the Alaskan politician's dream.

The fact that she called herself a "lame duck" with a year and a half left in her term does not bode well for for a person wanting to run for President.

She just ups and leaves like that? I'm not going to run for another term so I'll say good bye in the middle of this term.

Fark you Alaska - and thanks for your misplaced vote.

The thing is, Palin would have continued to get away with everything until she decided that she was ready for the big leagues of scoundrels. Then people started poking around at her deals, talking to different people, and really looking at the work she's done. She's not clever enough to be a star politician and she wasn't clever enough to realize that.

bronyaur1: kevalanb: lawboy87: FlashHarry: (Palin) shallow, arrogant and self-serving than previously thought - and would have zero credibility on any issue.

The issue was not "who's smarter?". David Gergen, Paul Begala, Pat Buchanan, and Donna Brazile, to name a few, are all qualified to talk about the nuts-and-bolts of elections, because they have all been involved in one. "Backwater" or not, she actually was involved in a successful statewide election, and was on the inside of an unsuccessful national election. Wouldn't it be interesting to hear the thoughts on what goes on in an election from someone who's actually been in one?

I'm sure that Rachel Maddow is a very smart woman, in fact, I'm sure of it. But if we are talking about politics and elections, I would value the opinions and experience of those who have actually run in one, had to knock doors, walk parade routes, and debate opposing candidates. All politics is local, right?
