the 3GS is the hot one

Cold hands? There's an App for that.

Wait, you mean to tell me that you should be careful when using sensitive, passively cooled electronic devices at temperatures above 113F?

I'm shocked. Shocked.

FTFA: Apple says that the iPhone has a safety feature which warns users that the device is becoming too hot.

Like changing the color of the case (and most likely your hands)?

That remains the only photo I've ever seen of a discolored case on a 3G S.

Most consumer electronics companies (like HP) run their products in temperature and hi humidity chambers, as well as shock (shaking/dropping).

With 3GS, looks like someone said "it's mostly the same! (so skip all them thar tests)..."

I wonder if Apple is going to spin this as if it isn't really a phone, and should not be used as a phone normally should... After all, Apple doesn't suggest you use their laptops while having them rest of your lap, due to massive overheating problems.

This is due to their laptops running at... Dammit, I forgot how hot. Let's see that screenshot!

Yep. 198 degrees.

Now I'm not quite calling bullshiat, but...

img158.imageshack.us

That seems odd to me. If heat was causing that discoloration, wouldn't you expect the discoloration -- or at least SOME of it -- to be close to the part that's hot? The middle of the case (where the CPU is) is still pristine white. That pattern of discoloration looks more like some pink dye rubbed off of his bedsheets or something (not that there's anything wrong with that).

And subby, "leaving your phone in the car in the middle of summer might be a bad idea" isn't exactly unlikely. I used to work at a video store some years back, and a couple of times every summer we'd get a VHS tape back that had been melted beyond recognition, I doubt small electronics fare much better.

Maybe the heat expands the entire piece, and the discoloration happens where the stress is greatest? I've seen that happen with rounded clear plastic turning opaque in certain areas, but I don't know why the white plastic of the iPhone would turn pink.

being a former cellphone tech, me thinks that the plastic is probably thinner in that area and causing this discoloration that nobody wants to acknowledge.

RoxtarRyan: fter all, Apple doesn't suggest you use their laptops while having them rest of your lap, due to massive overheating problems.

Amazingly, if you wear pants, this isn't a problem. Apple doesn't sell pants, as an accessory, but there's a lot of third-party vendors that sell pants, explicitly for this purpose.

Wasted Pixels: Now I'm not quite calling bullshiat, but...

Batteries also throw off heat, and the battery is between the CPU and the case. If there's enough heat reaching the outer case from the battery, then the battery should be showing some damage- which could be easily shown to the public by popping the case off (it's two screws). In any case, discoloration like that could be caused by the battery, but I'm not convinced by the evidence out there.

//My laptop stays around 70ºC, which isn't unreasonable- but the aluminum case will conduct that right to your flesh so wear pants!

And that's with only one working fan, because my cats got in the habit of using it as a bed and clogged the other with hair, and it died.

My 3GS (Jailbroken, YAY!) gets about as hot as my 3G.

Ever run a 3G using the GPS, iPod and 3G data transfer all at the same time? Not only does the battery die within an hour, but the phone gets hot enough that I have to direct the A/C at it.

Same thing with a 3GS. It gets a tiny bit hotter, but not more than a few degrees.

I've only ever seen that one pic of a discolored phone. I'm not even sure that what we're seeing is heat related, since the plastic would have to be just shy of bursting into molten goo for it to discolor that badly.

When more reports of discolored phones come in, then I'll give a damn. In the mean time, I've got a black model, so my phone will be fine.

/Thanks to geohot for the jailbreak
//Loving how much faster the GS is over the original

I'm getting a HTC Hero within hopefully the next month. Steve Jobs and the locked-in Apple crowd can suck my cock. My 160Gb iPod classic died this week @ the tender age of 10months, and apple refuses to fix it. The fruit vendor can fark off an die as far as I'm concerner.

Donnchadha [TotalFark] 2009-07-04 02:54:02 PM
Well, there's no evidence to support global warming existing, so therefore there's probably no evidence that these iPhones are overheating or suffering any damage at all. Nothing is going wrong and this shouldn't be a story.

gunther_bumpass 2009-07-04 03:39:56 PM
I'll never forget the summer of 1980.
Play stopped dead one afternoon when one kid said,
"hey. why are my stormtrooper's arms and legs yellow?"

"they're ALL yellow"

By 1981, Princess Leia's boobs had been rubbed flat
and we started riding our bikes more.

I am sick and tired of the pants industry forcing itself on America. This is America! No one, NO ONE, should be forced to wear pants or skirts or a long dress or underwear. We should be free to wear WHATEVER we want out in public. Even if it's NOTHING. It's all just a bunch of greedy corporate types trying to force us to buy stuff we don't need in order to drive up the bottom line by enacting anti-nudity laws. Why is America oblivious to such obvious corporate greed? Profits, profits, profits, that's all this is about. fark Bush and his "pants" policy. I voted for Obama specifically because I thought he'd get rid of this corruption in our government, but it looks like he's going to continue the corporate line. Hell, he wears pants every day!

Maybe you should stop being such a corporate tool and realize that not everyone needs to wear "pants" or "skirts" or "dresses". Quit letting corporate Amerikkka lead you around by the nose and start demanding that Apple supports people who refuse to wear "pants" as a social statement against corporate greed.

So let me get this straight:

Generation after generation of the promised GPS iphone app, and finally all it does is have you pay $ for it monthly to watch it overheat your phone? Genius.

What?

1) It's always had a GPS app, and they never promised turn-by-turn (in fact, until OS3.0 it was explicitly banned).
2) In now has a broad selection of better GPS apps that support turn-by-turn.
3) One of those GPS apps is AT&T's, which charges you a monthly fee (because they feed you custom data, not plain old Google maps)
4) TFA doesn't mention GPS anyway.

No, the awesome thing is the heat is properly dissipated.

My cat used to love lying on top of my old CRT monitor because it made a great heating pad. Then came the time she puked into it. Goodbye monitor. Thankfully it was in standby so she didn't get hurt. That's when I bought a flatscreen. She would go to leap up on it, realize there was nothing there, and look as wistful as a cat can look. I felt badly and got her a real heating pad, which made her happy.

not sure why people think its fake -heat radiates out...and that heat ring is the last edge of plastic (on the flat surface) it comes in contact with.
