"Marijuana smoke and tobacco smoke share 33 of the same cancer-causing compounds, according to agency scientists."

Yes...and most tobacco smokers smoke 20+ cigarettes a day. I don't know of anyone that smokes 20 joints in a day.

How about if you're feeding that medicine into a Tornado vape? Or baking cookies? Because smoking is but one of many intake methods.

Any burned vegetable matter contains cancer-causing chemicals.

Remember that when you add the hickory chips to your barbecue.

said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.

"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."

Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin's previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought.

Earlier work established that marijuana does contain cancer-causing chemicals as potentially harmful as those in tobacco, he said. However, marijuana also contains the chemical THC, which he said may kill aging cells and keep them from becoming cancerous.

Tashkin's study, funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse, involved 1,200 people in Los Angeles who had lung, neck or head cancer and an additional 1,040 people without cancer matched by age, sex and neighborhood.

They were all asked about their lifetime use of marijuana, tobacco and alcohol. The heaviest marijuana smokers had lighted up more than 22,000 times, while moderately heavy usage was defined as smoking 11,000 to 22,000 marijuana cigarettes. Tashkin found that even the very heavy marijuana smokers showed no increased incidence of the three cancers studied.

Yeah, what this guy said. People have to try so hard to find something truly unhealthy about marijuana, that they forget you don't even have to smoke it to get the THC into your body.

"It is used to treat leukemia. It is also used for pediatric non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, polycythemia vera, psoriatic arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)."

Kind of a stupid question but I'm curious....

Isn't nicotine the drug smokers get addicted to/want? Isn't there a way to get nicotine (I've never actually heard of nicotine causing problems) without smoking? I know you can chew tobacco, but that has some associated health problems too.

I mean, could you just chew nicotine gum, enjoy your buzz, and not really worry about cancer?

Mef 2009-07-04 03:28:14 PM
"If they want to classify marijuana smoke as carcinogenic, then that is true. It contains carcinogens," said Donald Tashkin, a longtime University of California, Los Angeles marijuana researcher who led the study. "That doesn't mean it causes cancer."

Personally I don't really care either way on this issue...but I'm curious, how does he define carcinogenic other than "causes cancer"?

Yeah their are transdermal patches, lozenges and now a hand lotion. There is a large psychological aspect as well, as well as just "ritual" bits that people get used to. Been a smoker for almost 20 years, my last attempt was fairly successful until a bunch of stuff went down. Patches for the physical, and sunflower seeds for the "ritual".

When ever I fly long distance, I usually slap on a patch so I am not homicidal by the time we land.

Fark_Guy_Rob: Kind of a stupid question but I'm curious.... [C]ould you just chew nicotine gum, enjoy your buzz, and not really worry about cancer?

A quick spin through google and wikipedia shows that nicotine contributes to problems such as atherosclerosis. So yes, "plain nicotine" can hurt you.

The major component of the "feel good" high of your first few nicotine doses is due to it screwing with your body's dopamine chemistry. But your body does NOT approve of this, and it stops making as much dopamine. So to get back to the NORMAL level of dopamine, you have to smoke.

Result: a powerful craving and little to no "high." Ask a smoker, they'll confirm that they stopped getting "high" really fast, and their feelings alternate between REALLY craving a cigarette, NOT craving a cigarette, and only craving one a little. I doubt this is what you want.

Also, nicotine is a mild stimulant. That's the other major "feel good" effect. But so is caffeine, with way fewer side effects and addiction problems! So stick to coffee.

Or go for the gusto and get real stimulants.

NOPE. If not raising your risk of cancer is a concern of yours, Not One Puff/Pinch Ever.

If you want a nic fix without damaging your lungs, though, you can always go for patches, chew/dip, not inhaling the smoke (you still can get the nicotine through your gums) etc. But ALL forms of nicotine are highly addictive, and if you're looking to quit, don't just pass off your addiction to a different form. You wont end up out of your little nicotine cage.

Cannabis, however, isn't physically addictive. Anyone telling you that it is has never tried smoking it in mass quantities for years and then ceased entirely. There are no negative withdrawals. Unlike cigarettes. There are also great medical and industrial uses for the plant, and smoking it is absolutely not necessary, but a convenient way to quickly extract it's medicinal values at a minor risk. Eating cannabis takes up to an hour and a half to kick in. If it's smoked, the effects become noticed nearly immediately.

/Day 5 of my nicotine quit.

Also, it was my understanding that the main reason cigarettes cause so much cancer is that the tobacco plant is very good at picking up polonium isotopes from fertilizer. In other words cigarettes are sort of nook yoo ler.

Do you know how much weed that is?

I am a heavy smoker of marijuana, for medicinal and now recreational purposes. I fully admit that. 20 joints in a day would put me in a coma.

Loving Judas 2009-07-05 05:09:11 AM
For a person to overdose (and die) on THC, they would have to smoke three times their body weight in one sitting. Average male: 900 joints.

Fallguyx 2009-07-05 07:54:31 AM
Nat'l Inst of Drug abuse considers a heavy smoker of marijuana to fall in the range of: 77 0.5g joints a week to 350 0.5g joints a week.

On the low end that breaks down to 11 joints a day (5.5g) on the upper end...rather the HIGH end, 50 joints a day (25g).

I used to think I fell into this category until I realized I only smoke 4g a day on average.
