still no hints at who will be performing at the memorial? any major networks airing it live?

Westbound traffic on Hollywood Blvd. has definitely become worse since Michael Jackson died. What used to be a six-minute drive from my workplace to the freeway now takes about 15 minutes due to the crowds of tourists trying to see his star down the street.

My first thought about 4 hours after he died was that california and the entertainment industry is going to get a huge boost.

Sadly it will probably be the idiots he was working with at the end of his life, mainly composed of voice processing abusers and talentless hacks that arent even good enough to be his back up dancers.

I couldn't believe that CNN was still having wall to wall Michael Jackson coverage last night. I care just as much about Michael Jackson as I did about Anna Nichole Smith. Why is celebrity death such a big deal?

Really?

You're gonna complain about Will.I.Am?

Really?

My girlfriend and I put in requests for tickets the moment we realized that it would be the equivalent of visiting Elvis's memorial.

....and we can take the metro to get there.

I was unaware that all news channels catered exclusively to your tastes. Sorry, Overlord Emperor Anon.

I thought Michael was supposed to risen out of his tomb by now.

Riot! Riot! Riot! This would be the perfect opportunity to start a riot.

Doctor Jan Itor 2009-07-04 03:16:53 PM
I predict riots because not everyone can get in. Traffic is gonna suck.

did someone step up to pay for LAPD overtime?

His death is the best thing that could've happened for the "Michael Jackson brand".

He's basically gonna be a legend forever, like Elvis (another guy that had lots of talent, but mostly wasted it, and turned into a parody of himself). People will choose to remember him before he got creepy and untalented. I expect that he'll sell more albums in the next 5 years than he has in the previous 15.

Well clearly they have to fix the damage from their last sports related riot, and they have to raise money for repairs from the next sports related riot.

Yep... the L.A. suckers taxpayers.

I love how the voters approve all these awesome programs but won't increase taxes to pay for it. LA Times says that this will pull from a regular part of the police budget for OT that's set aside for things like this.

I signed up for the ticket lottery. Auction will start at 50 dollars.

Yeah - except this cluster-fark has already brought more money to L.A. than it will cost. Our balance sheet on this will be way in the black when this is over.
(Fellow accountants, forgive me for my flagrant rape of accounting terms - the object was for a lay person to get my meaning)

FTA:But turning Neverland into a mini-Disneyland would have profound consequences for the rustic wine country of the Santa Ynez Valley that surrounds it - as the hundreds of journalists who attempted to book hotel rooms in the nearby town of Los Olivos discovered.

Put simply, there aren't any hotel rooms. And the hotels and yuppie B&Bs that do exist in the surrounding towns of Solvang and Buellton sold out within hours of rumours emerging that a wake would be held up there this weekend.

The reason there weren't any hotel/motel rooms is because it was the 4th of July weekend, not because there was a possible wake at the Neverland ranch. The rooms have been sold out for weeks/months prior to Jackson's death, it's a popular place to go during the summer. (That being said, I did sit next to an AP reporter at the Hitching Post bar)

Don't expect Santa Barbara County to approve any zoning that will turn Neverland ranch into a tourist attraction. They are extremely protective of the area and I seriously doubt they will open it up for future development.

As far as helping the economy of LA, probably not. I'm dreading my commute on Tuesday morning. I doubt the sales of bobble-head dolls and cheaply printed MJ t-shirts will put anything back into LA's coffers.

No, but anything the glut of people here to "pay their respects" buy also get the privilege of paying LA an extra 10% on top of that. Hopefully they'll buy more than a t-shirt some guy's selling around the corner from Hollywood/Highland.

There'll have to be a lot of crap sold to make up for the lost hours of productivity caused by the traffic jams on Tuesday. Plus the 10% is a state sales tax, I really don't know how much goes directly back to the local economy. Maybe some additional revenue from the bed-tax, but I got the feeling a lot of the visitors will be sleeping in cars or on friend's couches.
