Westbound traffic on Hollywood Blvd. has definitely become worse since Michael Jackson died. What used to be a six-minute drive from my workplace to the freeway now takes about 15 minutes due to the crowds of tourists trying to see his star down the street.

My first thought about 4 hours after he died was that california and the entertainment industry is going to get a huge boost.

He's basically gonna be a legend forever, like Elvis (another guy that had lots of talent, but mostly wasted it, and turned into a parody of himself). People will choose to remember him before he got creepy and untalented. I expect that he'll sell more albums in the next 5 years than he has in the previous 15.

I love how the voters approve all these awesome programs but won't increase taxes to pay for it. LA Times says that this will pull from a regular part of the police budget for OT that's set aside for things like this.

Put simply, there aren't any hotel rooms. And the hotels and yuppie B&Bs that do exist in the surrounding towns of Solvang and Buellton sold out within hours of rumours emerging that a wake would be held up there this weekend.

The reason there weren't any hotel/motel rooms is because it was the 4th of July weekend, not because there was a possible wake at the Neverland ranch. The rooms have been sold out for weeks/months prior to Jackson's death, it's a popular place to go during the summer. (That being said, I did sit next to an AP reporter at the Hitching Post bar)

Don't expect Santa Barbara County to approve any zoning that will turn Neverland ranch into a tourist attraction. They are extremely protective of the area and I seriously doubt they will open it up for future development.

As far as helping the economy of LA, probably not. I'm dreading my commute on Tuesday morning. I doubt the sales of bobble-head dolls and cheaply printed MJ t-shirts will put anything back into LA's coffers.

No, but anything the glut of people here to "pay their respects" buy also get the privilege of paying LA an extra 10% on top of that. Hopefully they'll buy more than a t-shirt some guy's selling around the corner from Hollywood/Highland.

Plus the 10% is a state sales tax, I really don't know how much goes directly back to the local economy. Maybe some additional revenue from the bed-tax, but I got the feeling a lot of the visitors will be sleeping in cars or on friend's couches.
