Sorry for not reading tfa. Came to say that the movie was exceptionally bad. Jesus, there's spoon-feeding and then there's this piece of shiat.

...and with the exception of the Choctaw casinos, Philadelphia is an even bigger dump than it was in the civil rights era.

Which is saying something.

How does anyone know he's african?

And why would any self respecting American insist upon associating their heritage with an entire continent, comprised of numerous countries?

/I'm guessing he's just a black American and howard ballou is trumping it up to generate page hits.

I hate THIS, but I'm lazy today.

So, THIS, especially the "associating their heritage with an entire continent, comprised of numerous countries".

really? so calling "Pathetic, small-minded PC terminology" what it really is = retarded?

seriously, how many so-called "african americans" do you know who have any direct ties to africa? as in, are those individuals, or their parents, or even their grandparents or great-grandparents from africa? can they name a relative from the last 100 or so years that are from africa?

I spent a lot of quality time in and around Philadelphia, MS back in '04 after the hurricane. The city went mostly undamaged, but the surrounding areas were tore up by the associated tornadoes.

I honestly didn't know about the "Mississippi Burning" bit until after I had been there for a while, then I read up on it.

My impression of the town was one of haunted neglect; half the people there want to move on and move forward, and the other half are stuck in the past. This transcends color lines.

The Choctaw can now be seen working in town. There is more than one Asian restaurant, and they do good business. The casinos are far enough outside of town as to not be a blatant eyesore, and the traffic they bring is the only thing keeping that town on the map. (If you ever wanted to find a classic car or pop machine to restore, that's the place! it has more junkyards than farms.)

As for the attitude of the people, I did find that there are dark pockets of racism that linger in unexpected places; i suppose that's true of anywhere, but it was scarier at how it just popped up when you least expected it, from "the nicest people". It was a real eye-opener for me on how the blame game works in other places.

I have faith that the younger generations will eventually move forward past the stigma that hides in the shadows of this place, but it's always the few bad apples in hiding that you have to worry about. I don't doubt that Philadelphia wasn't much different when the murders took place...

Oh, and skip breakfast at the "Huddle House" in Philly; no smoking ban aside, the um, health issues, are off the charts. My co-worker and I saw open violations of a nature that made me sure I was eating elsewhere that morning. I still get sick to my stomach just thinking about that joint.

Final thought for the moment: I think there's a law on the books in MS that if you own land, you *must* have at least one broken down classic tractor in your yard. Must be a cultural thing.

Neshoba County fairgrounds, I think; they have a strange way of doing stuff around there. People actually come from all over to camp out at the facilities and sit around listening to politicians. Sorry, but I can think of better things to do with my time!

I believe NPR had a special about this very subject last year at the height of the election.

ah, the power of propaganda in the hands of the elite.

The civil rights movement was a huge victory for the rich and powerful in this nation. If the USA were still segregated, america would have moved in the direction of europe, with national healthcare, 5 weeks vacation, progressive taxation etc.

And we all know how bad that would have been for the elite!

/divide et impera, same as it ever was

Exactly!

er.. *cough, splutter* I mean.. how.. dare you?
Yeah!
How dare you thoroughly thump a passive-aggressive hypocrite differently-brained individual with common sense and actual usage of your own mind. Special people tend to leap before they look, and we must show tolerance and understanding to those afflicted with mental challenges such as the handi-capable gentleman whose ass you just served up on a silver platter you addressed.

No kidding. What kind of retard would refer to someone's heritage by referencing a continent? As a proud second generation American, I prefer to be called an American rather than being a pretentious douche by demanding that my skin color be ignored in favor of a continent.

Farking retard is right.

Would he be willing to show his school papers?? and birth cert??

NeauxFear [TotalFark] 2009-07-04 01:52:27 PM
ProTip: Many black Americans refer to their African heritage because their tribal identity was systematically stripped from their ancestors, and many have no starting point to trace the record back.

Probably the most insidious part of American black slavery and Jim Crow. By law, we beat the proud spirit and the tradition of village storytelling out of them, and kept them illiterate. Hence, very little oral tradition goes back before Emancipation.

Fortunately, in this day and age, DNA testing can help trace your tribal ancestry. Unfortunately, it's quite expensive and many people who would like to know simply can't afford it.

schadenfreudian: And why would any self respecting American insist upon associating their heritage with an entire continent, comprised of numerous countries?

In many cases, because the slave trade involved separating children from their parents, so they do not know the full history of their ancestry. In others, it's because they can trace their heritage to multiple countries in Africa (many of which have been renamed or given new borders over the past century or two), and it's a convenience.

And who the hell cares? You might wish to explain why it bothers you to refer to people as they wish to be referred. Does it piss you off when people identify themselves as "Pacific Islander?"? "Scandinavian"? "Middle Eastern"?

But color me surprised that an Obama birth certificate troll such as yourself just happens to be crapping on this thread too.

I live about 20 minutes from Philadelphia and I agree that this is a "good thing" people (say it with me)! There are still places in Philadelphia that you dare not mention "that" movie (Mississippi Burning), or even the trial or incident itself.

I have to admit, in the movie the short, impoverished toothless Caucasian mumu woman criticizing those of black descent was hilarious. How can someone that farked up criticize anyone else I thought...but it was a movie and the real thing that pissed me off is that the characters cannot get the Southern drawl right.

Which leads to "In the Heat of the Night"; those asshats couldn't get the drawl right either.

Now STFU and get back to July 4 drinking and firecrackerin'

CORRECTION TO HEADLINE:

Should read:

"Philadelphia MS swears in its first Mayor with African ancestry," or possibly "---first black Mayor---" for short.

There is NO SUCH THING as an "African-American," period.

If you were born in America, you are an American.

If you were born in Africa, you are an African; some people might wonder from which of the several dozen African countries.

If you were born in a foreign country and become a citizen, you are a Naturalized Citizen, with all the rights of a native-born citizen, which is exactly as it should be(due to an archaic clause, you can't be President however; sorry).

However, you become an American when you take the oath; from that day forward you are no longer an African, a European, an Asian, or whatever you were before.

When you become an American citizen, you become equal to all other citizens, no better, no worse. That is as it should be.

However, the saw cuts both ways: You renounce all loyalty to your former nation, we have no room for split loyalties or half-citizens in his country.

From the article it is not even clear the new Mayor was born in a foreign country. He was probably born in America, and his ancestors for several generations were probably also Americans.

olddinosaur 2009-07-04 04:45:10 PM
The funniest one I ever saw was when a blond from Capetown, who was married to a prominent baseball player, promptly stood up at some meeting when someone said: "All African-Americans: Stand up!" and of course she was the only blond in the room standing.

Then a TV reporter, liberal bigot for sure, tried to put the right spin on it, and she made him look like a fool, saying: "--I was born in Africa, which makes me African; I am a naturalized citizen, which makes me an American."

It was hilarious.

olddinosaur: You renounce all loyalty to your former nation, we have no room for split loyalties or half-citizens in his country.

Kindly keep your backwoods xenophobe bullshiat out of my country.

Acknowledging your ancestry by self-identifying as __________-American does nothing to diminish your ability to be a good citizen of the United States.
