It's kind of weird... when you look at the picture of her apartment. For instance, that roll of paper towels on the floor.

That roll has been there for five years, just sitting there, untouched. All of these 'things' and nobody to use them...

I never understand in these situations how no one notices the mail piling up.

I pay 90% of my bills automatically but I still get all sorts of mail. Think of how much junk mail someone would have after 5 years.

It depends on the conditions. If it was not humid in the apartment, she may have mummified. In an apartment with the right conditions, a body will often partially mummify and partially putrefy. Decomposition in early stages is pretty fast.

I also find it hard to believe she was there a full 5 years. They seem to be basing that solely on some of the neighbors indicating they hadn't seen her for 5 years. I also have trouble accepting that nobody would notice the smell outside the apartment for that long. The smell travels well and would get into the hall and into other areas.

Not to get too dramatic, but what would really help is if neighbors were a bit more neighborly. People will happily walk by an apartment where the stink could knock a mule over without blinking. It's not until the decomposition starts leaking into the hall that anyone bothers to ask questions (new carpet in the hall is expensive).

Ha! You're pretty new to earning your own living then? Two months expenses isn't even close to what you should have saved. That can disappear pretty quick if the car you use to get to work breaks down, or any kind of medical emergency, or anything really. Won't be debt free for long unless you're lucky.

Sometimes shiat happens... life isnt all puppies and rainbows you know? Actually it's pretty much the opposite. She died of old age, what else do you want? There are far worse ways she could have gone out.

On the topic of rich -- every person's perspective is different. Money is not a goal to some people (it damn sure is to me though) The ones that didn't have to work for it live in a sort of alternate reality from the rest of us.

To the guy that has 2 months of living expenses saved up - I do congratulate you, you are better off than a large majority in this country. I hope you keep going and get about 6 months of expenses under your belt before you slow down. Paycheck to paycheck is no place to be, it's a reality though for many. Anyone can work hard and become debt free, the problem is most are not willing to make the choices they need to make to put them on the right track.

This is exactly why I have a "dead-man's switch" on my computer. After two weeks of no activity, it mails out some emails and updates my myspace/facebook/twitter status.
