FTA: He dressed the part. His first day at work he wore a gray Theory suit he had just bought for $950, a pair of Ferragamo loafers ($425) and a light blue BCBG button-down he'd had custom fitted.

Douche thread? I need to finish reading it, but it's already starting to make me think, "This was better when it was called 'American Psycho' and actually made me laugh".

That was a long-ass rambling story about how some guy wasted a few years in Buenos Aires because he was pouting about losing his job. And then a bunch more guys came in and did a whole bunch of blow. And then he went home. Woo.

Hau Ruck [TotalFark] 2009-07-04 12:18:45 AM
Around October, when the economy went into free fall, a bunch of out-of-work finance guys in their 20s descended on Buenos Aires, where you can have the penthouse, the steak dinners and the bottle service at ridiculous nightclubs and still save money renting out your apartment in New York or London.

I skimmed the rest of the article looking for something uplifting, like the untimely and/or made-for-TV deaths of these guys, but it wasn't there. Not a good story.

Here's the Cliff Notes:

Guy loses banking job, goes to South America where he blows lots of money on hookers and coke. Then he goes home.

I read this when it was first submitted, then have been off catching up on Daily Shows on Hulu. The only reason you didn't see your pretty much exact post at the top of this thread is I didn't want to push this crap to commented.

You know, I had a subscription to Playboy from 1975-2004; canceled it because the last few years the excellent writing and timely articles/interviews they had just turned to pure crap-and this is even crappier.

I don't get it. This guy claims to love the "entrepreneurial spirit" of investment banking (forgiving, for the moment that there's nothing entrepreneurial about working for a huge farking mega-finance firm), loses his job, and all he can think to do is whine and escape to some banana republic where he can live out his adolescent fantasy of partying like it's 1989? I don't believe his cover story for a second-- "emerging markets" my arse. If there's no credit, there's no emerging market-- especially for snot-nosed ex-pats.

Haven't been to Argentina. Have been to a lot of other places, including several where the dollar goes a long, long way (or did when I was there). Here's my take-away:

This guy was very invested in the US economy, and when it started falling apart, he was smart enough to look at emerging economies, developing countries, and so on. Seriously, I've thought of doing something similar.

However, he wasn't smart enough to rein in his spending. If you're burning through 10K a month, and you all of a sudden only need to burn, say, 2K a month, the correct answer is NOT to spend the other 8K on hookers and blow.

I'm more at the 2K a month level in the US, and even so I know friends other places who, on one quarter as much, have a nice apartment, car, etc. Hell, one girl I know just told be she's saved up and bought land - and she makes as much in a month as I make in 2-3 days.

Seems to me he got what he had coming.

SupremeLeader: The same idiots who think than Gordon Gekko and Patrick Bateman are role models to emulate got fired due to the free market forces?

Funny stuff. Funny stuff.

It reminds me of an engineer at work who described himself as a "Republican with libertarian leanings" and who was fanatically for the free market, Ayn Rand, and all that jazz.

When the inevitable layoffs came, he was the first to be fired and security escorted him out.

Those who live by "Atlas Shrugged", die by "Atlas Shrugged."

I worked for an engineer who said that every problem could be solved by the market, but that government muddled everything.

The company received lots of local taxpayer money and rent subsidies, as well as state grants.

(That's different.)

The story went better when I read the first couple paragraphs then added "I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said "Fresh" and there were dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought, naw, forget it, yo holmes to Bel-Air. I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and said to the cabbie "Yo holmes smell ya later." Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air."
