Sorry to pollute Caturday with a dog, but it's kind of relevant.

Many years ago, my parents had a wonderful Golden Labrador, Ben. Like all good things, he came to an end, dying peacefully in his sleep. A couple of years later, my father died of cancer. My mum decided that she would start helping other people bereaved under similar circumstances, so she started running coffee mornings etc for the MacMillan Trust.

One day, a lady said to my mum "You didn't tell us you had a dog". When asked to explain, she replied "A lovely Golden Labrador, in its basket in the hall. I think I woke it up. He looked at me, wagged his tail and settled down again".

Over the next couple of years, several people claimed to have seen a dog (Ben?) in mum's hallway. Perhaps it was the way the light shone through the window, perhaps not. The 'presence' was a comfort to my mum until she died herself a few years ago.
