What is it with Republicans and wrapping the same old crap ideas in new packaging and expecting people to buy it.

Hey, heres a thought, how about rethinking your old ideas modifying those you want to keep and throwing out those that don't seem to be be popular.

paygun - The American dream isn't more government with more power and new ways to screw us all. Get back to me when you figure that out.

Hell, I'll even listen if they decide to meet me half way and give conservatism a shot. They've tried everything else.

You've had eight years of conservatism. Don't try that disingenuous "that wasn't conservatism!" stuff...

Conservatives liked it so much they voted for it again in 2004 and stayed loyal and true to it right up to the point the wheels came completely off and they figured out they were going to have to distance themselves from Bush in the wake of the devastation that conservatism wrought.

When you hear conservatives talking about it, they start singing the same old 'trickle-down/deregulation/hawkishness' tune. The only complaint they lodge against Bush is spending, but they didn't lodge those complaints for the past eight years... only now, when they HAVE TO do it appear consistent when wailing and gnashing their teeth about Obama's spending.

When you invite someone over to your house time after time after time and he shiats the bed every single time, at a certain point you have to realize that that dude is a bed-shiatter... that's simply the fact of it. That's who he is and what he does.

The GOP is a bed-shiatter. Conservatism shiats the bed.

I'm sorry, Hannity has told me that if you tax the well-to-do you bring the economy to its knees and socialists run rampant. Comrade Eisenhower presided over the worst economic period this country has ever seen, am I right?

Yup, you are right. The well-known economist, Sean (Puffy-head) Hannity, or P Hanny, told us taxes are bad.

NeverDrunk23: I am really starting to believe that Beck/OReilly/Rush/Hannity/Coulter/etc all voted for Obama (and voted for Clinton) just so he could get into office and they could biatch about him and get more ratings/attention. None of them give a flying fark about this country and instead just want attention.

They all made money through the lean years of the Bush White House, so I'd assume they don't really care who's in office.

Obviously, there's some compelling reason they don't swing from side to side with each regime change, and I'm guessing it's not ideological.

Ever more reason to maintain a proper definition of it.

Yes, everyone wants a better life, and everyone should be free to achieve it. The only reason that "the pursuit of happiness" became the "American" dream is that America was the first nation founded on that particular moral standard, one which rejected the morality of not only every other nation in the world at that time, but that of modern America as well.

Oh, you're free to pursue happiness today -- just don't make too much money, don't do anything politically incorrect, environmentally friendly, in violation of "community standards", offensive to others' sensibilities, annoying, obnoxious, risky, unhealthy, deviant, random, dangerous, fun, or without a helmet and knee pads, and not without first seeking a state-issued permit or license ...

Actually, that's not a bad theme. Give them credit for being smooth manipulators.

Of course, a "freudian" interpretation would have to point out that identifying themselves as the party of dreams, AKA myth, fantasy, or wishful thinking, is very telling. After the oft-repeated contempt they showed for us in the "reality-based" world, I think it's probably the most honest sales pitch they've made in a long time.

I'm sure it will have some resonance with their followers, who were never really big on "reality" anyway. (seekrit-muslin-birth-certificate-mavrik-you-betcha!). All they need now is a candidate with a secret birthmark in the shape of a crown and a magic sword.

Heard his show before seems like he only says that because Obama's raising a lot of taxes and such that go after people who make $100,000+ a year, which doesn't mean a whole lot if you're a millionaire or something but it's fairly significant otherwise.

And technically speaking, every American's dream is to land that big job or make those big moneys... so Hannity likes to point out Obama is trying to kill that dream.

I don't think it will have any significant effect personally, (let's face it if the inauguration wasn't televised and the date wasn't already known no one would have been able to tell Obama was president anyways)

A common Republican mantra is that even though most don't make that much money, and never will have a salary that high, they don't want to tax it more or mess it up because that's their big dream. Sortof like if you made exotic sports cars illegal, you might not ever have enough money for one or ever own one, but it's a nice thought and if you did happen to get the money, you'd want to be able to have one.

Karl Rove is still one of the best strategists and political thinkers out there. I do not in any way subscribe to his philosophies of statecraft, but that man plays a long game.

Nobody has, in fact, been doing more to rehabilitate the Republican image than Rove at this point. It's less what he says and more what he leaves out.

As I said, brilliant guy. I follow him on Twitter for his history quizzes - they show what he's got on his mind and you can never go wrong knowing what your opponent had for breakfast.

I was kind of shocked when he went on Hannity today at all, given the ground right now, but it is clear what the marketing plan is : "Building a Bridge to the 80's"

This jives with the banking situation, the scandals, and the promised one's return.

Best talking point counterpunch - "SO you want to bring back SNLs and parachute pants?"

Game on.

I'll assert my Fifth Amendment rights on that one. :)

And it's not about being prevented from being happy so much as it is about being prevented from realizing my happiness to its fullest extent.

I'll give you the tip of the iceberg though: in a couple of years, I won't be able to purchase light bulbs that don't make my house look like a Soviet-era lab dedicated to discovering light wavelengths that induce uncontrollable retching.

I saw this live and I hate to admit, Hannity almost made sense with the first parts of his vision, then Rove had to throw in the "Don't forget about values" and it was like a switch went off and Hannity sputtered something about being the "family value" party again. Ugh.Hannity is such as....well, he's Hannity. But that one second, he tiptoed at the dge of a reasonable statement and then scurried back into his comfort zone.

Sabyen91: SynthLord: ChickenTits: The term "American Dream" is such a load of bullshiat.

I don't think so.

People don't realize that all the American Dream is is the self-made life. If you want to be a corporate ladder-climber, go for it. If you want to sit on the sidewalk and play guitar for quarters, go for it. If you want a career, or just a job that gets you by while you pursue fleeting interests; if you want live in a secluded mansion, or a modest apartment; if you want to travel ... whatever you want to do, whatever your dream is, it's (supposed to be) achievable.

Some people have a plastic-wrapped, conformist vision of The American Dream™, and market the hell out of it. Republicans have one vision, Democrats another. But you don't have to buy into anyone else's vision or dream.

One great thing about liberty is you can say no.

The self-made life -- pursuing your own dream in America -- is what the American dream really is. It's what the fundamentalist Pentacostal housewife in rural Kentucky, the leather-chaps-clad gay man in California, the Wall Street Banker, the recently immigrated sidewalk fruit-seller, and hundreds of millions of others have in common.

Don't buy into or ridicule others' dreams; it's the easiest way to ensure you never realize yours.

The American Dream is owning your own house and being self-sufficient and providing for your family. That is all. The right has turned it into a race to make the most money.

I think you're both right and Synthlord's statement is really dead on. I know the idea of throwing out a big "American this" and "American that" label causes people to recoil for various reasons. But I see it all coming back to the individual. Maybe your dream is different that mine, as long as you don't break the law or your dream interferes with mine, more power to you.

Sabyen91: SynthLord: Sabyen91: It doesn't matter if it isn't your dream. It is the original American Dream. Now it is a nasty, kick your neighbor to get ahead dream.

So maybe let's get change that together.
