hej: Lenny_da_Hog: hej: ...so I'm curious if she actually cited a reason for resigning when she gave this press conference.

None credible.

But did she actually give any reason (credible or not)? I caught the part where she complained about Letterman, but she didn't seem to actually say she was resigning because she was being picked on. It seemed to me like it was just 10 minutes of babbling farewell.

She didn't give a single reason, per se. She rambled on about wanting to help America, not wanting to be a lame duck since she's not running for another term as governor... but there was no solid reason provided.

cchris_39: Antonio_Talibanderas: Not when one of her biggest problems as a national candidate was that she was still a little green and needed more experience governing. I recall Pat Buchanan lecturing Chris Matthews on this - something like: "she needs to go back to Alaska, continue to govern with tremendous popularity and support and come back in 2012 with a record of successful conservative leadership."

Ya know, 20 years ago I would have agreed with you - well ok 2 years ago. But things have changed. Obama was just as green, probably even worse. But despite what the press says, ideology IS important. Obama is an ideologue, so is Palin, so was Reagan. That's why the Dem's fear her, they know she is the mirror to Obama.

Oh, bullshiat. Palin /=Obama. You can deny it all you want but Palin is not a popular person in the US (except among the most ridiculous Republicans).

Yeah. She left the governorship because David Letterman made a misguided joke, and because of the image macros posted on Fark.

On the other hand, though, you could actually be right - although that doesn't make her look any better. It's obvious that she's rather rash and impulsive, and that she sports about the thinnest skin in politics. Hell, she wasted a ton of effort going after some two-bit blogger. She went after the father of her only grandchild in the media. It's possible she was so hurt by the "liberal wharrgarbl Moonbattery" that something in her made her say (with no warning), "Screw you guys, I'm goin' home."

We do moonbattery; conservatives do wharrgarbl.

Lenny_da_Hog: That's the position she was in when she got tagged for VP. She knew damned well she was unqualified, but chased it anyway. Her own fault.

Hmm, good point. An aid picked her, but it's true she could have just said no. Granted I don't know how many people say "no" to Vice President, who are unknowns as it is (read - I can see Hilary doing it), and survive as politicians.

Ah well. As the boobies said, I'm gonna go get some popcorn.

And here's where it comes together today: The indicted Veco execs are supposed to be cooperating with the Feds. June 30th was a deadline set for the prosecutors to report on the extent of their cooperation. Three days later Sarah Palin suddenly resigns from her office as governor, with so little warning that even local media in Alaska has trouble making it to her press conference in time, and her head spokesperson is in NYC, apparently unprepared and with no coherent cover story.

The lesson here for all you perspective politicians. No matter how many screwed up things you've done, always (AND I MEAN ALWAYS) tell your handlers. They work for you so they won't sell you out knowing a POTUS spot is in the offing. If you don't tell, you're butt will be on national TV and you won't have a decent explanation.

Suddenly, the prospect of President Palin isn't so frightening. She would quit after six months so that she could get away from the gotcha questions of the drive-by media and instead focus on the Real Americans in Real America you betcha.

OK, amnesty time. Any remaining Palin supporters who want to admit her failure can do so for the next 24 hours without fear of reprisal.

FishingWithFredo: I was never a Palin supporter necessarily; just saw the Katie Couric interview for the hit piece it was always intended to be, and all of the interjection of Palin's family and personal attacking as wrong.

But I'm seeing Palin-supporting pundits on TV saying stuff like, "Well, don't ever count her out ..." "... she loves proving people wrong..." And, as has been said here, "Now she can go down to the Lower 48, get involved in more policy matters in a more high-profile way, and help her national aspirations."

Sorry. That's all utter crap.

It would be the easiest, most damning attack ad ever: "She quit on Alaskans; why should YOU trust her?"

And the game ends right there. There's no overcoming it; she'll carry it forever.

You'd almost think there'd be a peace about you if you were leaving on your own terms, for reasons you believed in. As has been pointed out, she was unprepared, rambling, and almost manic.

This is beyond weird.

Dunno where this came from, but Sarah is completely uninvolved in the Veco Scandal. It all happened before she ran for state office, and she doesn't associate with the legislators who were already in office.

She simply didn't have enough power to be important to Veco.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot.

Just watched her resignation speech and that thing took rambling incoherence to an entirely new level.

Watching it a 2nd time, why is she resigning again? Is she actually saying that she'd just waste money if she stayed in office taking fact-finding missions around the globe? That she could do more political good outside of politics? WHAT?

The "truthfully and honestly" comment stands out, the only people who say such stuff are lying bastards in the middle of a lie. This speech sounds like she expected whatever the scandal is that prompted it to have come out before the speech.

There is no political upside for her leaving the office early but plenty of downside. This 100% completely kills her Prez aspirations, we do not vote for quitters.

Friday evening announcements are bad enough but holiday announcements = "we want this shiat buried as deeply as humanly possible".

I have no idea what the underlying scandal could be but it has to be huge. I'm wondering if its even a political scandal in that I'd think she'd be better able to weather such while in the office than outside as a regular citizen. Sex scandal?

Kimball_Kinnison 2009-07-04 02:10:57 AM

According to the Veco wikipedia page:

"Sarah Palin is another Alaskan politician that received campaign support from VECO. The International Herald Tribune reported on September 3, 2008, "As Palin campaigned unsuccessfully in 2002 to become lieutenant governor, she received contributions from executives at VECO Corp., a powerful Alaska oil field services company." The questionable donations totaled $4,500, over 10% of all her funding that year."

And shortly after the Palin home is built, Palin takes over as the head of Ted Stevens' PAC.

UNINVOLVED???

Sorry. I'm just as "anti-Palin" as rational people come. If there's more evidence than what's presented in this blogpost then I'll certainly consider it. I'm also not at all dismissive of the idea that some scandal is going to erupt any moment...

That said, the blogpost is far from compelling evidence in my estimation.

Of all the pathetic Palin defenses, this is the dumbest.

SHE ... COULDN'T... ANSWER... BASIC.. COMMON SENSE... QUESTIONS.

And then she whined "gotcha" for the rest of campaign!

Repeated, slowly, for the republicans in the audience...

SHE ... COULDN'T... ANSWER... BASIC.. COMMON SENSE... QUESTIONS.

(And that was the LEAST of her stupidities.)

Though I do like how some repubs are suddenly, "Hey, I wasn't ever actually for her, I just thought blah blah blah." Sort of like how they flip-flopped when Dubya's failure was too big for even partisan hacks to ignore.

Nice backpeddlin', losers.
