And tonight I shall feast upon the sweet delicious tears of Palin supporters.

Slight tangent - am I the only one thinking that some McCain aide, in picking her as the VP candidate, has ended up ruining her life? In exchange for 15 minutes of fame, a bunch of scandals that, sadly, would probably have just gotten swept under the rug, are now going to make her get pwned into prison or huge fines. Her career in politics is pretty much over at this point (though I'm sure Fox News will find a slot for her between 11 and 2).

Ah well. The country is better off for it.

DNC Spokesman Brad Woodhouse:

"Either Sarah Palin is leaving the people of Alaska high and dry to pursue her long shot national political ambitions or she simply can't handle the job now that her popularity has dimmed and oil revenues are down. Either way - her decision to abandon her post and the people of Alaska who elected her continues a pattern of bizarre behavior that more than anything else may explain the decision she made today."

I don't know if I would go so far as to say "continues a pattern of bizarre behavior" ...

But unless Palin comes forward soon with an explanation that makes all of this nonsense make sense ...

I ...

Uh ...

Agree completely with the DNC's statement.

cchris_39: Sabyen91: You can tell me all you like about what kind of guy I am but you still can't deny that Palin leaving office is not slightly odd. Or you would but you are a right-wing tool.

It's out of the box (no pun intended) but really, how does she benefit from staying up there and governing God's Frozen People for one more year.

She's a long shot at best. Her best strategy is to get to the lower 48, shake hands, kiss babies, and be on TV ALOT.

Not when one of her biggest problems as a national candidate was that she was still a little green and needed more experience governing. I recall Pat Buchanan lecturing Chris Matthews on this - something like: "she needs to go back to Alaska, continue to govern with tremendous popularity and support and come back in 2012 with a record of successful conservative leadership."

She absolutely can not run for president with a record of quitting halfway through her first term - a term she needed to finish in order to form a record of successful leadership.

Campaigning and fundraising for other politicians != political leadership experience. For God's sake, any celeb/athlete/musician, etc. with a little star power can rally a crowd.

Politically, she is done. That doesn't mean she can't be influential in other ways, but she certainly isn't bolstering her credentials by doing what she claims she is doing.

That part of her speech is normal. That's how she's always spoken, until McCainCorp trained her to be a Coen Bros. movie caricature.

As tight as she was on the information (like, not telling the Lite Gov until less than 48 hours before the announcement), I'll bet either she or Meghan Stapleton wrote it. No professional speechwriters to make her look competent to America.

You can count on that - Today, my uber-Republican friend and co-worker said (after I informed him of her resignation) said that there are 2 camps - those that love Palin and those that hate her.

I disagreed and said I didn't belong in either camp. A scandal wouldn't surprise me, but I would find it surprising that she resigned ahead of any news or rumors of a scandal. Most people of her caliber (or lack thereof) seem to think they can ride out the storm.

Then again, she is batshiat-crazy as demonstrated by her campaign against Letterman - Letterman is not funny, but he wasn't actually making a joke about screwing her 14-year old and even if he was those types of things are best left ignored.

It's like HST once wrote about LBJ....According to HST, LBJ once told his campaign manager to start a rumor about his opponent farking farm animals. His campaign manager told him that was crazy because no one would ever believe it. LBJ told him that didn't matter - let's make the farker deny it. I don't know if all this is true, but LBJ was elected president after that.

Yes. If she resigns, she gets to do whatever she wants.

Moreover, I have more respect for her than I do Obama, McCain, Bush, Clinton, etc.........who continued to technically hold their office at taxpayer expense (on several levels) while spending 100% of their time campaigning for President.

Fjornir: I'm about as anti-Palin as you could fine but... "same windows, same wood, same products." kinda sounds hollow when you realize you're talking about a town with a population of less than six thousand. How many contractors are in town who can take on such a project? How many suppliers for them to order from?

I FINALLY SORTED OUT THE WEB SURROUNDING THE HOUSE BUILT BY THE PALINS:

It's more than just the same building supplies showing up in both their house and the Wasill sports complex.

The architect at the design firm that was awarded a $500k contract to design the complex is the son of one of Palin's mentors.

Palin then named that architect to the committee that then chose a contractor owned by a guy who contributed $4,000 to Palin's campaigns -- which was a lot of money for the level of politics she was at at the time. The other bidding contractors protested the bidding process.

One of the subcontractors, a company called Spenard (remember that name), was a sponsor of Todd Palin's snowmobile team and had hired Sarah to do a commercial for them a couple of years earlier. This is where the supplies come in, as Spenard also supposedly supplied the Palins with some of the materials for their new house.

Todd Palin claims he built their house with help from some "buddies," but he won't say who they were. And Sarah blocked an effort to require the filing of building permits in Wasilla, which ensured that Todd's "helpers" remained a secret.

Tangentially, around the same time that the above was happening, Palin was running for Lt. Governor. About 10% of her campaign funds came from an oil field service company called Veco.

Veco is at the heart of the Sen. Ted Stevens scandal. The company's top execs have been indicted for bribing Alaskan politicians. They allegedly had paid $250k for an extensive remodeling job on Ted Stevens' house in 2000. Spenard was also involved in the work on Stevens' house. (Sounding familiar?)

Shortly after the new Palin house was built, Sarah took over as head of Ted Stevens' PAC.

And here's where it comes together today: The indicted Veco execs are supposed to be cooperating with the Feds. June 30th was a deadline set for the prosecutors to report on the extent of their cooperation. Three days later Sarah Palin suddenly resigns from her office as governor, with so little warning that even local media in Alaska has trouble making it to her press conference in time, and her head spokesperson is in NYC, apparently unprepared and with no coherent cover story.

a.) The scandals wouldn't have gotten swept under the rug, regardless. Alaskans are truly getting sick of the corruption and have busted over a dozen of their own in the last year or two.

b.) As I said in the other thread, she is solely to blame. If someone came to me and said, "Hey, Lenny, I need a nuclear physicist to work on my power plant!" -- well, I might like the money and prestige of the title, but I know damned well I'm unqualified for the job, and leave my old job to take it.

That's the position she was in when she got tagged for VP. She knew damned well she was unqualified, but chased it anyway. Her own fault.

Yeah. She left the governorship because David Letterman made a misguided joke, and because of the image macros posted on Fark.

On the other hand, though, you could actually be right - although that doesn't make her look any better. It's obvious that she's rather rash and impulsive, and that she sports about the thinnest skin in politics. Hell, she wasted a ton of effort going after some two-bit blogger. She went after the father of her only grandchild in the media. It's possible she was so hurt by the "liberal wharrgarbl" that something in her made her say (with no warning), "Screw you guys, I'm goin' home."

And yes, yes we do act like children. An entire nation of the most powerful children on the planet. If she can't handle Alaska, she certainly cannot handle POTUS.

I was never a Palin supporter necessarily; just saw the Katie Couric interview for the hit piece it was always intended to be, and all of the interjection of Palin's family and personal attacking as wrong.

But I'm seeing Palin-supporting pundits on TV saying stuff like, "Well, don't ever count her out ..." "... she loves proving people wrong..." And, as has been said here, "Now she can go down to the Lower 48, get involved in more policy matters in a more high-profile way, and help her national aspirations."

Sorry. That's all utter crap.

It would be the easiest, most damning attack ad ever: "She quit on Alaskans; why should YOU trust her?"

And the game ends right there. There's no overcoming it; she'll carry it forever.

You'd almost think there'd be a peace about you if you were leaving on your own terms, for reasons you believed in. As has been pointed out, she was unprepared, rambling, and almost manic.

This is beyond weird.
