Yes.

No. You need 5 kills to be on a killing spree.

Does it worry anyone else that we have enough large-scale violent crime that we need this many (and more) terms for it?

I didn't think serial killers liked using guns. Too easy to trace, and your victim tends to die too quickly.

Nope not really, he just moved there for a new job and works a ton of hours so I don't get a chance to catch up. Plus he's an ultra conservative christian and talking to him to long hurts my brain because he sounds just like Fox news so I want to stab myself in the ear.

TheGhostofFarkPast: My brother lives in that town and he's freaking out because this madman is running around. I'm not familiar with this area but isn't it small town America pretty much?

Pretty much, yes.

Example: I try to get back there 2 or 3 times a year to visit family, after leaving 20+ years ago. About 6 years ago, a small Chinese takeout opened within 5 minutes drive of my Mom's house. I've been in there maybe 5 times over those years during my visits to Mom's since they opened. 6 months ago, when I stopped in to get takeout for lunch, the owner yelled as I came in the door "Back for more spicy vegetarian?" I'm pretty confident if I walked in today they'd start my order.

When I'm in Gaffney, in some store or whatnot, I often strike up a conversation with some older person who can tell me my family tree and lineage, and my history, that I've forgotten or maybe never known.

Live in Gaffney and its environs for about 1 year, and you'll realize that "Andy Griffith" and "Mayberry RFD" weren't imaginary. People there REALLY DO leave their doors unlocked (or used to). So far, there have been 5 deaths (and 6 attacked) last week--I think this is 2x the average yearly homicide rate for the area.

Hell, every time I go back, I wonder why I hated it so much.

Honestly, living in podunk SC will make anyone go on a spree. Pee Wee Gaskins anyone? Yeah, that was my home town. He was right - lots of places to hide a body and no one will ever know how many you did. Makes sense.

Are you joking?

The perfect serial killer would use a gun. The Beltway Sniper could have gone on forever if he had kept moving.

Had this discussion back in the day with a friend taking a criminology course about serial killers. How long could a killer go on if he went several towns over and sniped a person every few weeks/months?

Since so many of you are speaking of Mayberry RFD and Andy Griffith, I just want to say I'm currently in the real Mayberry (Mt. Airy) visiting my girlfriend, and on Sunday will be going back to Charlotte.

I assume this killer guy will stay in Gaffney, because I think he would get lost on the streets in Charlotte and killed in the ghetto, but I may be wrong. Hope he gets caught soon, don't like someone like that roaming around so close to me and my family. He's not far from Charlotte or Anderson, SC where my family is.

NotARocketScientist [TotalFark] 2009-07-04 02:54:18 AM
The difficult thing about being a mass murderer isn't the "murdering" part, it's the "mass" part. It's the pace you've got to keep up -- the sheer volume of murdering.

So what if they killed people who were really fat (high mass individuals)? Do they have to kill fewer to still rate as a mass murderer? They get a large volume per murder.

Well, as a person that has studied serial killers for over half his life, I'd be more than happy to help out. I doubt that anything that I know would be anything of any importance, especially if they already have Federal agents on the case but... Fark it, let me give a mild profile just from reading this article and one other.

Your suspect is a white male, somewhere in the usual space between 20 and 50, but what will set him apart is he was recently released from a job or something he held close to him, possibly a relationship. Something made him break. He has lost his faith in humanity, because he's not only robbing, but killing too... Yet he left the young girl alive. There is something there. Even if she was wounded, a true killer will finish the job if he has that hate in him, we've seen it before. He has bound his victims but if judging by this last case, didn't finish what he intended (or atleast didn't kill her when he meant to) which is actually not good. His brazen attitude is a cry to get caught, bound or not, he has left a victim alive. He will continue killing people until he is caught, which will hopefully be soon. He cares about money, but not human life... But I think he is aware. He'll be reading the papers, possibly online, he'll know that everyone is looking for him. I'd be on my guard if I was on the outskirts of town, farms etc. because he's going to still have his hunger for control, money, and what he thinks of as "power", but everyone in the city will be on their guard. He will not stop until he is stopped. He has a taste for this, probably thinks of himself as a peoples hero, with time he will brag. Hopefully he doesn't get that time.

"can someone please answer this for me? Im 17 years old and was wonderin if i seen this man and shot him if i would go to jail"

So, either one of you just came up with a truly inspired troll, or I'm seriously frightened.

Also, according to other comments from people with scanners the Police may be pursuing the guy right now.

Also, from experience, don't get caught up on that "over 40" part of the story. Even with the sketch. He looks it to me too, but it can be wrong.

When they finally got Bundy, Ramirez, Dahmer, Gacy, name your serial killer... Look how unlike the sketch they were.

You know what you look like to me, with your good bag and your cheap shoes? You look like a rube. A well scrubbed, hustling rube with a little taste. Good nutrition's given you some length of bone, but you're not more than one generation from poor white trash, are you, Agent Starling? And that accent you've tried so desperately to shed: pure West Virginia. What is your father, dear? Is he a coal miner? Does he stink of the lamp? You know how quickly the boys found you... all those tedious sticky fumblings in the back seats of cars... while you could only dream of getting out... getting anywhere... getting all the way to the FBI.
