budsterr: smooshie: Isn't that a spree killer, not a serial killer?

I came here to say that. I agree with you. Subby and AP are morons and serially stupid.

Serial: At least three kills with a cooling-off period between each.
Spree: At least three kills with little cooling-off period between them. Kills will be geographically apart from each other (not part of the same house/business/school/whatever).
Mass: At least three kills in one discrete event.

Gotta love the South. What's the over/under on a church/school/flea market/picnic shooting before this is done?

It's the heat/humidity. Also, it's Gaffney. A suburb of Spartanburg. Which is to say, a suburb of Shiatville.

Except the FBI is the ones who have actually labeled him a serial killer because of unreleased evidence.

Also no one one gives a flying fark about this kind of pedantic bullshiat except you and your other autistic friends.

/former NYer.

SRSLY.

Not anything remotely as serious as TFA but in my neighborhood lately there's been some person (people?) opening cars and night and going through the glove boxes, stealing petty shiat. The response on the neighborhood mailing list? "Oh my, we always leave our car unlocked, you mean we should lock it now?" "yeah my car was hit too, of course we always leave it unlocked" etc etc. WTF?

I don't live in crime central or anything (though clearly there's some, as evidenced by this) but it's always just been pure REFLEX for me to lock my stuff and my house when I walk away from it. Lock my bike up too.

So, what we've got here is a typical problem of identifying sufficient and necessary conditions for inclusion in a class.

Bathia_Mapes: FarkingMonday: No. You need 5 kills to be on a killing spree.

U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics defines a spree killing as "killings at two or more locations with almost no time break between murders." According to the FBI the general definition of spree murder is two or more murders committed by an offender or offenders, without a cooling-off period; the lack of a cooling-off period marking the difference between a spree murder and a serial murder.

The term "mass murder" refers to the killing of four or more people during a particular event. Examples would include killing several people in the course of a robbery, or setting a crowded nightclub on fire where four or more deaths occur.

Regarding "spree" versus "serial", all of you CSI-watching Wikipediaphile pedants are missing some salient points.

1. The Gaffney sheriff said "serial" because that's what the FBI reps who are working with him said.

2. The first two attacks weren't really "geographically apart from each other", if you live in Gaffney or nearby. Mr. Cash and Mrs. Linder are both in the same rural/farm area, and the Tyler store is almost within spitting distance of the sheriff's office. See previous post.

3. It's very easy to imagine some connection between the killer and the victims. I'm 43, and was born in Gaffney and lived there until I moved away for college. Hazel Linder was a geography teacher at my junior high way back when; I knew Kline Cash and his family and their business just like every other person in the Gaffney area did; and, as for the attack last night, it's hard to believe (if it's the same killer) it wasn't done just to taunt the sheriff's office--the sheriff and Tyler's store are basically along the same road within about a 2 minute drive (and probably a 5 minute walk). I haven't lived there in 26 years, and that's still pretty evident.

4. How does the nomenclature matter? Both Mr. Kline and Mrs. Linder had signs advertising hay for sale. Mr. Tyler owned a rent-to-own furniture/appliance store. So maybe he's a destitute livestock owner with rented furniture who was foreclosed--does it matter if he's on a spree or acting serially? He's still at large, and given the small size of the community, he's still a threat to just about anyone who lives there.

Finally, yes, I do have receipts showing I wasn't in Gaffney when Mr. Cash and the Linders were killed, so don't even ask.

badhatharry: Another reason why it is a good idea to own a gun.

Generally by the time a serial killer or spree killer makes himself known, you're too dead to pull out your weapon of choice.

That's why they're so effective. If you knew them in advance, they wouldn't make the second kill that allows them to become serial or spree killers.

However, MASS murderers CAN be stopped in mid-attack by other armed civilians; this may be what you're thinking of.

BTW:
Serial killer: 3 or more killings over a period of more than 30 days, with a "cooling off" period between killings. Usually a ritualistic or sexual component to the killings.

Spree killer: 2 or more killings at 2 or more locations, with no "cooling off" period between the killings except for transit time.

Mass killer: Multiple killings at a single location, often with great violence.

(FBI/DoJ definitions)

I was mostly referring to the current situation. Anyone living within a couple of miles from the area has gun or is wishing they had a gun. The one's wishing they had a gun probably went to visit a friend or relative that has a gun.

kxs401: I came here to say something like that -- I thought a specific serial killer's victims were similar in age, physical type, etc and killed in a similar way to each other. Then I was worried that I've just read way too much crime fiction, which isn't exactly the same as having knowledge.

Glad to have my instincts confirmed.

In a bout of insomnia, I saw a special about serial killers. There isn't necessarily a pattern of the victims, but of the pathology of the killer.

Somehow their minds are cross-wired and the murders give them a huge sexual release. Many feel guilty and don't want to kill, but it's the only way they feel that release. A sick sort of masturbation.

GEORGE: How many deaths is a disaster?
MASON: More than five. Five's bullshiat
GEORGE: How many?
MASON: 16-20 disaster, 21 and up catastrophe, 8-15 is a calamity
RUBE: 7 and under?
MASON: That's a crying shame

An interesting fact about Charles Whitman, the Texas Tower sniper, was that when he went on his spree in 1963, most Texans carried their own firearms totally legally. When everyone realized where the shots were coming from, civilians started shooting back before the cops got there. This forced Whitman, an expert marksman and Army sniper, to keep his head down, and limited his shots; most of his kills were made in the first few minute of his rampage.

Not that I'd ever support the idea that everyone ought to have guns "just in case" something like this happens, because it doesn't happen very often; however...

I don't know if it a good idea to have everyone carrying them around. To me, a gun is like a fire extinguisher. They good tool to have in case of an emergency, but I am not going to carry it around with me.

I already left town, and I'm shorter and thinner than the suspect. I drive a Beetle covered in Grateful Dead stickers. I have a beard that's almost at my sternum, almost 75% gray (the beard, not the sternum), which is pretty hard to miss.

Hell, even if I did it during some weird mental fugue, either the police sketch artist or I should already be in jail.

Serial Killer's Identity Sketch Released: Authorities need your help!

Now with a total of five shot leaving four deceased and one teenager in serious condition, authorities are sure they are looking for a serial killer. Cherokee County Sheriff Bill Blanton said evidence connects all five shootings, and investigators believe one man is responsible.

Blanton said the killer is described as having salt and pepper hair, about 6 feet 2 inches tall, driving a silver 1991-1994 Ford Explorer. He said a blue van previously thought to be of interest has been eliminated as a suspect vehicle.

He asked that anyone with information call Cherokee County CrimeStoppers at 864-489-2746 or Spartanburg County CrimeStoppers at 58-CRIME.
